Asia » South Korea » Seoul May 2nd 2013

The second day of our vacation was the one where we really got into Seoul to see things, and also marks where you get a lot of my thoughts about the country and culture along with the recap - this might get long, but I swear, it's... well, marginally interesting, haha. Anyway, there were two main themes to our Korean trip, and they were: 1) MAKING FRIENDS!!!, and 2) I don't know what is happening right now. The first thing we noticed about Korea was, as we had been warned, that it is a great deal dirtier than Japan. However, I think that because our frame of reference was from Japan and not somewhere like America, that it seemed dirty, but Michele commented that if we'd come from Thailand, where she lived for three years, it ... read more

Well, here is the first entry from our trip to Korea! We started out early, because it takes about 2 hours to get to Narita from where we are (ugh) and we wanted to make sure we had plenty of time since it was Golden Week, and therefore everyone was traveling. Turns out, we got there a bit earlier than we needed to, but it gave us some time to comment on how awful Narita actually is (we had to go to the information desk to find where our check-in counter was) and exchange some of our yen to Korean won! Going over, the plane ride from Tokyo is shorter than our 2 hour trip to the airport from my apartment, which I found both awful and hilarious. It was still light when we got there, ... read more

On my "Saturday" last week, I decided to go into Tokyo and go back to the Meiji Shrine. It's a really popular, well-known shrine that is frequented by tourists, and while Jamie and I went there in 2009, I hadn't been back, and I sort of wanted to see again with my new frame of reference in mind. Things I saw when I was visiting years ago suddenly seem a lot different, and it's really fun to compare! So, I put on my new plaid hi-top Vans and set out. It's super easy to find and has the added bonus of being a place I remembered, so once I got to the entrance I knew exactly where I was. There were tons of tourists, which is the one problem of visiting a tourist trap, but to ... read more

I woke up early today on my "Sunday" so that I could go hiking - something I had been wanting to do for awhile. Sometimes, you just need to get out of the city! I WANT to climb Mt. Fuji this August, but I'm really not sure that a) my gimp knee can handle it, and b) I'm in good enough shape. So today was sort of a beginning test to see what my body could handle. I went to Mt. Takao back in November, to see the autumn colors, but hadn't hiked it since. This time, I went alone (!!!) which was awesome, because I like doing things alone and knowing that I can have independent adventures. Mt. Takao itself is a super popular day hike because of it's close proximity to Tokyo, but according ... read more

Since "full bloom" fell roughly in the middle of my work week, I knew I'd be hitting sakura in the tail-end of "full bloom" by the time my weekend rolled around on Wed/Thurs. Wednesday was a miserable, cold and wet day, though I did take a long walk around my area proving you don't need to go far to see something beautiful here! But Thursday was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day, and I made the most of it by heading into Tokyo to see the spots my students recommended to me. My first stop was Chidoriga-fuchi, an area that sort of loops around the outside of part of the Imperial Palace. I visited the Imperial Palace in 2009 when I came here with Jamie, but hadn't been back since. I was SO GLAD my students told ... read more

We got word last week from several students that the cherry blossoms had opened early. Normally, "optimum" viewing time is the first week in April, generally April 1-10, but this year, the blossoms opened over a week ahead of schedule, which really threw off everybody's "hanami" parties. This also includes my days off, that I specifically took to be during sakura time, but haha, I suppose that's what I get for trying to plan anything around nature. Anyway, the blossoms are out, so today on my day off I headed out to see if I could hunt down some good shots. It's a little early still - full-bloom is probably a week away, still, and the trees that are blooming now are generally no more than 50% in-bloom. But what an amazing view it is, even ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kanagawa » Odawara March 7th 2013

It's plum blossom time! After one of my coworkers posted some really great pictures on Facebook from Umegaoka and told me they were in bloom, I decided to look up some places to go see them on my days off. I stumbled upon the Odawara plum blossom festival, and found that it had been extended through Wednesday - my day off! It seemed like fate, so I decided to head out on my own on Wednesday to see what the buzz was all about. My journey took me out on the Odakyu Odawara line, about an hour and fifteen minutes from my home location. It was fun going in the opposite direction from Tokyo and Yokohama, since normally when I travel I am going towards those cities. The route took me a lot closer to Mt. ... read more

While it hasn't been a busy time for much sight-seeing due to the temperatures, it HAS been a time when a lot of stuff that needed to get done got done - and most of this is stuff that I have done in Japanese myself. While Jocelyn was here, we hit the Ueno Zoo and got to see the cute animals there! We saw a Giant Panda for about .5 seconds amidst a wave of Japanese parents shoving through people with strollers. It was like being back in America again, it was amazing and nostalgic. The penguin exhibit was closed due to renovations, so I made a ton of sad faces and resigned myself to going back another day to see my favorite animals out playing. But there was some pretty cool stuff and it was ... read more

Jocelyn is visiting from the states right now, and while she is here, we're trying to do fun stuff and see lots of things I don't normally get around to. Even though it's winter, and it's not very picturesque, we decided to go to Kamakura on one of my "weekend" days to wander around and see the multitude of shrines and temples there. It didn't take too long to get there from my neck of the woods - about 60 minutes, give or take with trains and connections. It was cool, but not cold, and though we had our coats on, we were quite comfortable walking around. It wasn't busy, either, which I guess is a benefit of going during the off-season. We made it in good time, by 11 AM, and decided that our first ... read more

It's been a long time since I wrote a blog! Coming back to Japan was a pain since my flight got so screwed up. We were delayed due to mechanical reasons out of Chicago, and it ended up being such a long delay that by the time we got into Narita, it was after all public transportation out of the airport had stopped - and a cab to just Shibuya, which would only be halfway to my apartment, would have been over $250! Fortunately, they got a bus to take us to Shinjuku and I had a friend to stay with overnight, but it was really just not a great situation and I can't say I'm in any hurry to fly United again. But I was anxious to get back to my life here, so I ... read more
