Europe » Ireland February 15th 2015

Friday, February13, 2015 - Carly and I set out from Galway to Dingle ...three buses and 5.5 hours later we arrived to the very windy, colorful, little town of Dingle. We checked in to our hostel, Lovett's Hostel which is a small, family-owned hostel that is only a few minutes walk to all of the pubs and local shops. Since it was late afternoon and the sun was still out we walked the circumference of the town starting along the coastline and looking at local restaurants and shops and then beginning our way up the hill, past the sheep farms and back into the other side of town. Since we went during the off-season many of the restaurants were closed until dinner time and shops closed down early, but a few scattered ones are still open. ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland February 15th 2015

Friday, February 6, 2015 - After arriving in the Edinburgh airport at 7:30 a.m (after a very early morning of traveling from Galway to Dublin, and then Dublin to Edinburgh) we made our way to the city to find our tour. We were amazed by the architecture in Edinburgh and loved walking around the beautiful city. Even though most of our time was spent out in the countryside in Scotland, it was definitely a city I would return to and would recommend to those who are visiting Scotland. The tour we took was through the Timberbush Tour Company, and lasting 9 hours long it was one of the shorter scenic day trips available that began in Edinburgh. Our first stop was at Stirling Castle where we were able to wander around (and get lost in) the ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Connemara January 27th 2015

Saturday, January 24, 2015 - Two of my roommates and I took a day trip to Connemara (northwest of Galway) through the Galway Tour Company. The bus ride itself was very scenic and we were able to see a few lakes and drive through the mountain passes of Connemara National Park. The main sites that we were able to see included the Kylemore Abbey, a Victorian-walled garden, and a gothic church. The abbey was originally a castle and home to Mitchell Henry and his wife, Margaret in the 1860s. In 1920, it was taken over by the Irish Benedictine Nuns and the castle was converted to an abbey. In 1923, the nuns opened up a school that was open to international women and closed in June 2010. Today, it is open to the public for viewing. ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Galway January 27th 2015

My first day of class at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) began on January 12, 2015. While there are some similarities, there are also many differences in student life in Ireland than in the United States. As a visiting student, I was able to "shop for classes" for the first two weeks of school. During this time I was able to sit in on classes that I thought I possibly wanted to take but did not have to commit to if I did not think it was a suitable class. I am now registered for five classes that mostly have to do with Irish culture (Irish history, Irish religion and folklore, intro to Irish culture studies, castle development, and sacred places/Christian buildings). Each class meets twice a week for 50 minutes and for my ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Aran Islands January 27th 2015

Saturday, January 17, 2015 - My roommates and I took a day trip out to one of the Aran Islands, Inis Mor. To get to the Aran Islands from Galway, we took a shuttle about 1 hour north of the city and then an hour ferry ride out to the Islands. The shuttle bus was rather scenic along the western coastline of Ireland and also had great views of the mountains. The ferry boat was also very scenic with the mountains and exploring Galway Bay. However, the waters were a bit choppy and did not make the water as enjoyable as it could have been. (It was not as smooth as the ferry boats back in Seattle, and I don't know if Dr. Shepherd from Grey's Anatomy would have liked ferry boats as much if he ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Cliffs of Moher January 12th 2015

Saturday, January 10, 2015 - My roommates (Carly, Carla, and Sarah), Amanda (a girl from our apartment complex), and I decided to take a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher which is about an hour and a half south of Galway. We booked a tour through Galway Tour Company which picked us up at a bus station that is about 15 minutes from our apartment. Our bus driver/guide's name was John and he was very comical and shared a lot of information about Ireland and the various towns we passed through. Along the way to the cliffs we stopped for pictures at a few castles and light houses, and had lunch in Doolin which is about 10 minutes from the cliffs. It was a gorgeous drive and I felt like I was in a movie ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway January 12th 2015

Tuesday, January 6, 2015 - After catching up on some much needed sleep, we explored the city for a bit! We went shopping at Dunnes Stores which was described to us as the equivalent of Walmart or Target, but felt much more like I was shopping at Macy's and its Home Store with an attached grocery section. Everything here is reasonably priced and doesn't seem to expensive yet. We also went to a few other stores in the area to get various things. That night Caitlin, Emily, two other girls from our apartment complex, and I went to the Shop Street area for dinner. We ended up at the Quay's which is one of Galway's many many pubs. We all tried our first Guinness and some Irish food, including Irish stew. We also learned that eating ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Galway January 12th 2015

Monday, January 5, 2015 - I arrived at the Portland International Airport at the dark and early hour of 3:30 AM. I was very fatigued because I could not sleep earlier that night, but was very excited for the upcoming trip. Me and the other three girls (Emily, Caitlin, and Alicia) I am travelling with from school made it through the first flight okay but experienced a very turbulent landing. We arrived in Newark, New Jersey an hour early which meant that our layover there was extended and was no 6 1/2 hours long. After spending the afternoon in the airport (and observing that Jenna Marble's claims about overdressed people at the airport were very true on the East Coast), we made it on to our second flight okay. We could definitely tell that most of ... read more
