Friday, February 6, 2015 - After arriving in the Edinburgh airport at 7:30 a.m (after a very early morning of traveling from Galway to Dublin, and then Dublin to Edinburgh) we made our way to the city to find our tour. We were amazed by the architecture in Edinburgh and loved walking around the beautiful city. Even though most of our time was spent out in the countryside in Scotland, it was definitely a city I would return to and would recommend to those who are visiting Scotland. The tour we took was through the Timberbush Tour Company, and lasting 9 hours long it was one of the shorter scenic day trips available that began in Edinburgh. Our first stop was at Stirling Castle where we were able to wander around (and get lost in) the castle. It was built atop a hill, and since it was a clear day we were able to see several cities away as well as the beautiful mountain ranges in Scotland. Inside the castle were old artifacts and art pieces, and preserved rooms from medieval times. From there, we stopped at a second castle known as Doune Castle where the Monty Python movies are filmed
and also some episodes in the show Game of Thrones. From there we visited the small town of Callander, Scotland. It was a very cute town, known as the "gateway to the Highlands," and had great views of the mountains. We ate lunch there and visited some of the shops along the main road. We then drove past Loch Venachar and stopped shortly past that to meet and feed some of the cattle on a farm, and continued on through the Scotland countryside and past a national park. Our final major stop was in the town of Luss to see Loch Lomond which was absolutely beautiful. Along the ride back to Edinburgh we stopped to take pictures of Stirling Castle at sunset before being dropped off again. We stayed the night at the Castle Rock Hostel which is just a block from Edinburgh Castle. It was my first time in a hostel, so it was a new experience but overall a nice place to stay. Since we were in the middle of the city, our room had a beautiful view of Edinburgh.
Saturday, February 7, 2015 - We started our journey on a train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. After
getting a little lost on the train and with the help of some locals, we arrived in Glasgow before noon. We quickly realized that Glasgow was a much different kind of city from Edinburgh. While Edinburgh had an old fashioned charm, Glasgow was a much more modern city with lots of shopping, and lots of people in its city center. To be honest, it was much more like visiting other big cities and I wouldn't recommend it without researching it first. On this day we walked around one side of the city exploring the Glasgow Cathedral and its museum, George Square, St. Andrew's Square, and the Glasgow Green. We definitely enjoyed wandering the city and taking more of a personal tour. That evening we flew back into Dublin, and took the bus home to Galway. Overall we had a wonderful first international trip exploring Scotland and attempting to understand their heavy accent.
