Having been too lazy to do up a blog for a while, and because quite a bit has occured in the last few weeks, I've decided to combine a number of weeks into this blog. We last left your two faithful adventurers after five wonderful days in Berlin. Heading straight across Germany and into the Netherlands, we arrived in Amsterdam and quickly made our way to what was to be the worst place we'd ever stayed in on this trip. The bloke that greeted us seemed to prefer if we had not arrived at all and was not a friendly chap at all. Well balls to that and we set off to explore the red light district of this city. Semi-naked chicks winking at us from the windows, the sounds of Bob Marley everywhere and the ... read more

Berlin We arrived at Berlin in the early evening (about 4:30pm), but it was already dark. Our hostel was supposed to be quite close the train station so we started hiking there in the rain. In retrospect, if we'd seen the sign that said our hostel was 200m on the right at the first intersection we came across, we probably would have turned that way. But oh no.... we had to not see the sign, turn right and spend the next 45mins wandering the streets looking for our hotel which had been so close to us! So Fu$@ing annoying. Anyway when we finally reached our hotel and chucked our gear in our room, we headed off to find something to eat. We had dinner at a small vegetarian restaurant - the food was amazing and we ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken December 29th 2010

Interlaken Our next stop on Eurotrip 2010 was to a small town in Switzerland called Interlaken. It rests in a valley, surrounded by the Swiss Alps and in between two beautiful lakes. Without doubt, it would have been one of the most beautiful places we'd ever been (and that includes Queanbeyan). We arrived quite late so it was dark as we walked the short trip to our hostel, but in the morning when we walked out, we were greeted by the snow-capped Swiss Alps all around us and some light snow falling. As you can imagine, it was quite cold, but that didnt stop us going for a walk through th Alps. We needed to catch a train to get up in the Alps and we actually thought our free transport cards (given to us by ... read more

Europe » France » Paris December 29th 2010

Paris It was an early start the day when we left San Sebastian to head to Paris. A 6:30am train got us to Paris relatively early and in what has become a rare occurance, we navigated our way to our hostel with relative ease. The hostel was located in Montmatre, which is some distance from the central area of Paris, but the metro system is very good there and we didnt have any issues at all getting around the city. On the train up to Paris, I learnt a couple of very basic French phrases which I thought might get me in the good books with the locals. However I quickly discovered that I was pretty much stuffed once they would reply to me. The dude that ran the hostel thought it was all very amusing ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Chagford December 20th 2010

The trip to Chagford turned out to be a little more complicated than initially thought. We got the shuttle bus to the airport, checked in and were ushered onto our flight. The Captain came over the loudspeaker and told us that there would be a minor twenty minute delay due to the runway being de-iced and cleared of snow. At the end of the twenty minute, the captain came back over and said "bad news, airport's closed". Damn it!! So we stood in line trying to sort out a new flight or get a refund, and after three hours had moved no where, and we had been told that there was probably not going to be another flight to London until the day after Boxing Day. Ok... alternative route now required. This also meant that we ... read more

Europe » Ireland December 12th 2010

It had been snowing in Dublin when we arrived about midday on Sunday. The Paddywagon shuttlebus took us directly to our hostel and we quickly stowed the bags and went for a wander around the city centre. It was very busy with a lot of christmas shoppers, but it was good to have a look around before we headed off on tour. The bis driver told us that Dublin had not seen snow like that for over 10 years and on the way to the city were mounds and mounds of snow. Apparently they had also ran out of salt until the next week so there was a little traffic chaos around. The next morning we were herded onto the bus, along with 20 other people, who were mostly Aussies and Kiwis. Our tour guide, a ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London December 1st 2010

We picked up Apollo 14 (our "Spaceship") at about lunchtime on Monday and after completing the regulation systems checks with the onboard computer, we blasted off and set off for our first destination - the Cliffs of Dover. It was somewhat intimidating driving out of London and along the main roads in England. The speed limit does say 50 miles-per-hour, but the reality is that the cops are few and far between, and people seem to go as fast as they want. The fact that it had been snowing throughout the past week didnt seem to really faze too many people either. It was a relatively short trip to the coast of England, but it was getting dark by the time we arrived in Dover. We made our way to the Cliffs, but the light wasnt ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Montepulciano November 22nd 2010

Montepulciano It was a quick train ride to Montepulciano - truth be told the train station was actually in a town called Chiusi, which was about 20kms from Montepulciano. We were actually staying in a little town called Chianciano which was was smack bang in the middle between Chiusi and Montepulciano and we had to take the bus - I'm sure you'll be surprised to know that there were a few dramas getting to our hotel once again, including a little issue in that we thought Chiusi was actually Chianciano, which created a large amount of disorientation, but I wont bore you with those details again... Needless to say a good lesson was finally learnt - not a lot happens on Sundays in regional Italy and public transport is pretty minimal. It was quite overcast when ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona November 22nd 2010

Barcelona After leaving Montepulciano, we headed to Livorno to catch a ferry across to Spain - the ferry was supposed to leave at 11:30pm, we arrivied at the port at about 7:30pm, as we didnt really have anything else to do (and were carrying backpacks). But when we arrived there, the dude told us that the ferry had been delayed because the French navy had been doing military manouvers in the Mediterrainean and had wandered into commercial lanes and caused a fair bit of havoc. Bottom line, ferry wouldn't be boarding until at least 11:30pm, and wouldn't be leaving until about 4am. Spewing. That meant that we'd get into Barcelona at about 2am the next morning, not 8pm as planned. Oh well. We met a family of Kiwis while we were waiting - a couple who ... read more
