Hey everyone! I am back at it again. Exploring central america. Made it to costa rica a week ago and every minute has been incredible. Getting here was a bit hectic. I missed my flight from Dallas to Costa Rica because my plane was late leaving Denver. I was then sent to Miami so I could catch the only other flight leaving the next day. I met a really nice lady on the plane from Miami to San Jose and she ended up driving me from the airport all the way to Puntarenas to a ferry that I needed to catch in order to make it to Cabuya to begin work. It was very helpful because i have my large backpack and all my kayak gear. Now I am in Cabuya. a very small town at ... read more

So, I left Africa... I am a little bummed, but I am in Europe now. So everything is great. It was very weird to get back into civilization. A little reverse culture shock I think. It is odd to no longer be a minority. It's all good though. From Equatorial Guinea, I went directly to Madrid and stayed in a hostel for a few days. That was by far, the nicest, cleanest hostel I have ever seen or heard of. It's in between the hippie neighborhood and the gay neighborhood, so as you can imagine it was great fun. My friend Sally, in Malabo, set me up to have her friend in Madrid take me to all of the sights and to all the best night clubs. I really had a great time. Spaniards party very ... read more

The last month has been really busy back here in Malabo. Classes and field trips around the country have taken up the majority of my time. Time has gone incredibly fast for me, as well as my housemates. None of us are ready to leave. We leave Malabo on April 4th. Crazy. Classes are going really well. I am learning a lot. It's hard to sum up all I have learned. However, most of the things I have learned weren't learned in the classroom. I have gained such an insight into the culture and lifestyle here I feel like this place has become like a second home. I have really gotten used to Malabo life and I will be sad to leave. This place has changed me. As my friends back in Gunnison know, I try ... read more

I am back in civilization once again, back at the house in Malabo. We spent a few weeks in a small town called Moka. It was not quite as rugged as the last expedition but it was definitely a welcome change of scenery. The climate there in the highlands is much more what I am used to. Its about 60-70 degrees during the day and it was not nearly as humid. At night I actually had to use a sleeping bag because it gets a bit chilly. At the beach and the Caldera I didn't even take my sleeping bag out of my backpack. We all traveled by van up to Bioko Nature Center/ Wildlife Sanctuary in Moka, Equatorial Guinea. The town of Moka is very small and everyone is very friendly, unless you take pictures ... read more

It's been about 3 weeks since my last update and a lot has happened out here. The few days before we left for the expedition was all packing and preparing equipment for the trip. This includes food for 40+ people for 18 days, and thousands of pounds of gear needed for primate research. It was a lot of work but it was worth it. The small group of students that I live with here in Malabo, and I were mostly along for the ride. I mean that we were obligated, not asked to do much more work than all the others to get ready, only because we has less credentials and were less experienced at conservation work. The scientists and researcher were to busy sucking up to the National Geographic photographers and writers that would accompany ... read more

It's New Years Day in Malabo. I am loving every minute of this Island. I arrived on Sunday night and was greeted at the aeropuerto by the house director, and we drove to the house in the middle of the city. When I say city, it's more like a large village with cars and slums. The people of Malabo are amazing. The language spoken here is spanish. I have already made some equatoguinean friends who are helping me learn more spanish, in exchange I am helping them learn more english. The Island is very hot and humid. But I love it anyway. It is a huge change from Gunnison, that's for sure. Right now this feels more like a vacation than school. We have been just hanging out in Malabo and enjoying the amazing climate and ... read more

I am in Madrid. It certainly could be worse. I am in a very nice hotel room drinking a bottle of amazing spanish wine and eating delicious cheese and bread. Earlier I walked around the Centro Comercial for a few hours and took some pictures. This city is very beautiful. However I am ready to be out of civilization for a while. Beside the spanish language and the food, this place is a lot like the US. I saw a Burger King earlier. Bummer. Don't worry I didn't eat there. I just scoweled at it and wondered why they wanted all of the world to be fat asses and not just the US. What can you do? The people here are not as polite as I thought they would be... I was definitely getting a little ... read more

After a really long flight, I made it to Madrid. I will be here until tomorrow night. When I finally leave for Africa. I am not too stoked about the exchange rate from Dollars to Euros. Everything is extremely expensive here. I am glad I won't be here for long. I was hoping it would be warm here... It's not. And the people here are very impolite. Perhaps this is because I am American? Makes sense...Well see ya later. I need to catch up on some sleepy time. ... read more

This morning I woke up in a hotel near the Chicago O'Hare Airport. My flight out of Denver yesterday was delayed by about 7 hours and therefore I missed my flight from Chicago to Madrid last night. United Airlines gave me a voucher for a hotel room after I waited in a customer service line in Chicago for almost 2 hours. All of the people in the line were frusterated travelers on the same flight I was on from Denver. I leave for Madrid later today(24 hours later from my original flight) at 4:30pm Central time. Since I am so late I will miss my flight to Equatorial Guinea, which should have left tonight, I will be in Madrid for the weekend. I am not too upset about that. I will just have to eat some ... read more
