We hope this is the beginning of many years of travel in the future. Our intention is to pass the travel bug onto our kids and to push ourselves out of our box and out of our comfort zone. No more Mexico All-Inclusives for us, we want to experience something more real.
Starting with our trip to Peru for my 40th birthday and we'll see where we go from there.

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Baños March 26th 2011

Our final few days were spent in Banos, on the skirts of the Tungurahua volcano which slept peacefully the whole time we were there. It was erupting just a few months ago and we did hope to see some smoking but there was no action. Banos is a great little town on the road toward the amazon, with 2 central squares, lots to do, very pretty and everything within walking distance. There are some great hikes up to beautiful miradors overlooking the town and valley, numerous thermal baths and waterfalls are everywhere. They have lots of stalls selling the sugar cane toffee, they make it in Banos, you can also get a fresh pressed glass of sugar cane juice and lots of vendors with BBQ pollo on a skewer. We did a 5 hour horseback trip ... read more

Flew back to Quito for the weekend and stayed in the newer Mariscal Sucre area for a different view of Quito. Great location right on Plaza Foch in Nu-House Boutique Hotel. Was so nice to spoil ourselves with HOT showers, TV and someone to do the laundry ! On Saturday night the plaza was loud and wild until about 4am when the street was lined with taxis taking everyone home. We were surrounded by bars, dance clubs, shops and restaurants. Great environment. The streets were packed, not with tourists but with locals. Everyone dressed to the nines, out on the town. We got up early on Sunday morning to walk to the park. The police close down quite a few streets in Quito on Sundays so that families can bike through town. There were lots of ... read more

South America » Ecuador » West » Puerto López March 16th 2011

Just a quick flight on a small commuter jet and we go from chilly mountain air to hot and humid beach town. This is the "winter" in Ecuador and that normally means hot and sunny days at the beach with rain every afternoon but we've had no rain at all. We landed at the airport in Manta with too much luggage for the little car so I had to have a bag on my lap for the 2hr drive to Puerto Lopez (no air-con) but it was fun nonetheless and we had a laugh every time the car bottomed out on the huge speedbumps. We took a winding coastal road instead of the highway and I guess the idea was that there would be no other traffic. The only other vehicles we came across were the ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Cotacachi March 16th 2011

Another great day spent in Otavalo area. We went to Hacienda Cusin in the morning for horseback riding and an amazing lunch. The Imbaburra volcano was in the background. The country is dotted with gorgeous old haciendas, quite a few of which are run as hotels and restaurants. It was a little too fancy and white linen for us so we asked to sit out on the terrace where we were very comfortable. Fantastic lunch! I've never seen a soup tureen used. All the food was like art, beautiful & colorful, not to mention delicious. We managed to skirt the rain during our outing but as we waited for a driver the downpour started..... and ended about 30 minutes later.....just as we arrived in Cotacachi. Cotacachi is filled with store after store selling leather goods. I ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Otavalo March 14th 2011

In Otavalo for three days. It's just north of Quito. We spent (literally spent $$) a full day at the famous Otavalo markets. There are 3 separate markets, one is for buying and selling animals (including giant amazon larvae), one for food & household goods, and the other is an artisan market. Mostly it all blurs together into what seems like miles of streets crammed with people buying and selling everything you can imagine. It was impossible to see the town until the next day when the streets cleared out. We stayed at Posada del Quinde which is perfectly located so we could walk to everything. I thought we had missed the animal market because we were lazy getting out of bed in the morning but our hostess at the hotel encouraged us to go and ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito » Historical Center March 13th 2011

After the 2 day milk run through Seattle, Dallas Fort-Worth and Miami, we finally arrived in Quito. Immediately we felt the altitude. We arrived in the dark and rain, thankfully a driver waiting for us at the airport with a sign. On the way to the hostal the streets were EMPTY in the Old Town, everything sealed up for the night. Hostal Quito Cultural is only 2 blocks from Plaza Grande, right on the corner of a really busy intersection which is like a carnival from about 6am every day and then everyone is GONE by 8pm and it's considered unsafe to be on the street after that. There is nothing open, everything has metal doors sealed up to the street but inside all the buildings are courtyards open to the sky. What a beautiful day ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Alajuela December 15th 2009

Back at Mike and Victoria's for the weekend then the trip would be over. They have a great street with all the kids playing together and most of the neighbours get together for a party every couple of months. One neighbour who raises pigs, provided the meat and the cooking skills to make chicharones (spelling?) for the pot luck. He brought a bucketful of pig parts and cooked them in a cauldron of oil until they're crunchy like bacon. They eat it with deep fried plantain and cooked yucca and salad. You can drizzle a mandarin over the meat and wrap it in a soft tortilla. It wasn't my favorite food of the trip, chicharones probably are an acquired taste. The kids had a ''Macarena'' contest. It was definately the most challenging evening for spanish practice; ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Guanacaste » Samara December 11th 2009

Not enough time in Samara. We stayed at the Fenix hotel. A small 6 room hotel but really it was more like staying with friends at their summer home on the beach. We wish we had by-passed playa grande and just came straight here for more time in Samara. The pool was 2 meters from our front door, and we were right on the beach. The kids each found a hammock within minutes of arriving. The rooms have a full kitchen, separate bedroom for the adults, fabulous towels and everything clean, clean, clean. Great place for a family to stay and feel comfortable. It gave us a taste of living at the beach. Doug and Sophie had surfing lessons in the morning at Tico's and they guaranteed success. Sure enough, within the 1 hour lesson they ... read more

Playa Conchal - WOW. We drove north to Brasilito following the GPS and it took us to this rutted dirt road which 'dropped off' onto the beach. I immediately said no, no, no, back up the car. No place to turn around so I got out to help Doug reverse without going off road or running over the dog laying on the road side. Then we found the town square and parked. This guy in a lowered, tricked-out prelude pulled up beside us and started asking if we wanted to go on a tour. This is the kind of guy you avoid in canada but here, no. We had a great conversation, he showed us his restaurant which was closed for the day but open the other 6 days a week. Then he took us to ... read more

I don't know why the photos don't seem to come up for this entry. When you click on view full entry if there are no photos you can just go back and click on the photo of sophie eating watermelon and have the option to scroll through the playa grande photos. Spent Monday and Tuesday night in Playa Grande. Really the only reason I wanted to go there was to see the nesting leatherback turtles. I knew the surf was too dangerous for the kids to swim in. Unfortunately the hotel messed up our reservation for the turtle tour after I booked it and confirmed it twice, then when we arrived at the hotel Monday night we were fully expecting to go see the turtles but the lady at the hotel said it's booked for tomorrow ... read more
