The university decides to stay at the Laredo - Texas side for insurance and security reason, but we are free to go to the Mexican side of the town - Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. All the vans are to stay at the hotel along Rio Grande, and we walked over the Friendship Bridge to Mexico. Just like that, we are in Mexico without even having our paperwork checked by the Mexican immigration and custom. The assignment is to observe different culture through landscape design projects in Mexico. Carrie, Sandy, Jason and I were paired up to walk around as a group, and we survived the day. We had our dinner at a small piazza tucked in somewhere and I guess it was bluntly obvious that we don’t look like Mexicans, as we hastily had to decline many ... read more

What I like about Texas By Gary P. Nunn You ask me what I like about Texas I tell you it's the wide open spaces! It's everything between the Sabine and the Rio Grande. It's the Llano Estacado, It's the Brazos and the Colorado; It’s the Spirit of the people who share this land! It's another burrito, it's a cold Lone Star in my hand It's a quarter for the jukebox, boys, Play the songs of your favorite Austin Texas band! Well, you ask me what I like about Texas It's the big timber roundneck Nacadoches Driving El Camino Real into San Antone It's the Riverwalk and Mi Tierra Jamming at the Bungo Joe The stories of the Menger Hotel and the Alamo! (You remember the Alamo!) It's another burrito; it's a cold Lone Star in ... read more

North America » United States » Oklahoma » Oklahoma City October 30th 2001

Our third leg of Savanna Studio 2001 began in Oklahoma City, after a long drive from Iowa. With our mind set of traveling south, we were surprised to find out that Oklahoma City was almost as cold as Iowa. Some of us didn't care, upon our arrival in our hotel around 9 pm, we were changing into our swimming suits and jumped into the hotel's outdoor swimming pool, which turned out to be so cold. For a couple of seconds after jumping, I couldn't decide whether the water was very hot or very cold; I felt like thousands of needles piercing through my skin. The highligh of Oklahoma City was the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, where a bomb blasted in 1995, killing 168 people including many children. There were some quiet moments within our midst, ... read more

Part of the Savanna Studio Fall 2001. We visited several cities in Illinois, including Galena (a neat small town by the Iowan/Wisconsin border), Chicago (of course the biggest city in Illinois), and Peoria. We managed to do a small detour to Indiana, to Indiana Dunes which is located by the Lake Michigan shore. ... read more

It was a great feeling when I finished swimming across the Mississippi River, to fulfill my to-do-list-before-I-die. Even though it was at the Headwaters, MN, where the Mississippi River is only about 30 feet wide, but of course I did "Swim across the Mississippi River" (check). The Mississippi Headwaters is located in the Itasca State Park under the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources. There is a wooden sign to signify the headwaters, HERE 1475 FT ABOVE THE OCEAN THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI BEGINS TO FLOW ON ITS WINDING WAY 2552 MILES TO THE GULF OF MEXICO. "Mississippi" is way harder to spell than "Amazon" or "Nile". LOL. ... read more

We spent most of our times at La Forche, or the Forks, where the Red River and Assiniboine River meet. On Sunday, professor Gary Hightshoe invited all of us who are Catholic (or whoever being interested in) attending a mass at the St. Boniface church. This church looks like a ruin from England, with just its facade standing up, with a big hole where the rose window used to be. Instead of tearing it down or rebuilding it, they built a smaller scale chapel inside the church, where all of the mass attendees gathered and celebrated the holy ceremony. The most unique thing about this mass is that it was in French. French sounds like Greek to me, I don't speak either language, so we just sat there, looking around the people and waited until they ... read more

North Dakota. What can I say about the state, which has more power line poles than human? As soon as we arrived at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, all we could think about was how remote the area was. All we have here is open wilderness, with hills and green open fields, and buffalo are grazing in a distance. The night here is amazing, with nobody else but our group, no light obstruction coming from anywhere; all we have is our companion and thousands of stars in the sky. I introduced the brutal "Indo slap" game, which creates a lot of noise and injuries. Little Missouri River snaked through the National Park, the murky brown color of the water reminds us of chocolate milk, and even I drank a sip of it in front of Lori, ... read more

Spring Break: a college tradition Wasn't big into spring break, not until my pledge bro Keth invited me over his family's beach house in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. Heck, why not, so a bunch of us frat boys drove from Iowa to North Carolina straight for roughly 18 hours. Not much too remember, except some drunk stories that are not appropriate to be shared in this blog. But anyhow, we survived the whole week in North Carolina (and a little bit of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina), and back to Iowa. We had a blast! And I ended up with tons of licence plates (hey Matt! Remember what happened that night?)... read more

Chiang Kai Sek airport, Taipei. I am in a lay over to go to Jakarta to attend my sister's wedding. I took off from Des Moines, transiting in Dallas, Los Angeles, and of course, Taipei. This two week journey will be an interesting one: one week of Thanksgiving break and another week of break extension. I am a little bit worried about the weather change and expecially the reversed culture shock I might experience by having living in the States for so long. But of course, the highlight is my sister and her future husband and my future brother-in-law, Julius. They are highschool sweethearts, and have been dating for nine years now, even though for four years they lived apart in two different cities for college. ... read more
