North America » United States » South Dakota » Badlands September 1st 2000

Traveling with the rest of the Wiriadisastras without Fika was very interesting. We decided to road trip to South Dakota from Iowa, it was a good distance trip and a good cause as well; none of us had been in South Dakota before. I started to do a little research on what to do in the state, but of course I've always had wanted to see the Mt. Rushmore; who doesn't? But anyway, we drove though the Badlands, where the "devil" supposed to pass, thus it was named "les mauvaises Terres" - the Badlands, by French explorers. It almost felt like passing through movie stage, with fake colorful hills and unreal, just like Daly paintings. Quote from Frank Lloyd Wright, what I saw gave me an indescribable sense of mysterious otherwhere - a distant architecture, ethereal, ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Orlando January 2nd 2000

This entry is reserved for my unfortunate trip to the Orlando to visit the Mouse family and the most awesome playground I've visited so far (i.e. Island of Adventure - Universal Studio). Unfortunately all the wonderful pics I took were destroyed, and turned out to be just black. I will try to preserve my memory and look for more evidence as time permit to record this trip. Sorry for the short update/email notification. But enjoy it, anyway! ... read more

Ottawa - la capital du Canada Finally we’re back in an English speaking territory! Arriving in Ottawa on Saturday evening, we spent the night in a University of Ottawa dorm room that serves as a hostel during summer break. Ottawa feels like London, especially around the Parliament building where the English architecture dominates the landscape and the changing guard ceremony is as colorful as the Buckingham Palace one. Other than around the Parliament complex, tourists are hardly spotted in Ottawa. Toronto Toronto is a modern city, and it feels like we are back in North America. A lot of things are going on, from Toronto's busy street with cars and loud pedestrian crossings that beep all the time, people are dressing up in funky style, and tall modern looking buildings and shopping malls. Our visit to ... read more

Montréal: Je me souviens Montréal is great for any tourist standards. The city is nice, with integration between the old European style architecture, and the modern contemporary structures around the city. This is one of the reasons why we chose Montréal as a start point for our small reunion. Flying from Chicago, Sisca and I touched down in Montréal Dorval airport around 7pm, and tried to locate Yusuf, Johnschen and Fitria that had arrived from Baltimore two hours prior our landing. This is a French territory, as I reminded myself, as we saw many European looking people walking all around us speaking French. It doesn’t feel like we are still in North America; after all, Québec is trying to liberate itself from Canada, with the failure of 49-51 votes several years back. This is the reason ... read more

A quick trip to/around Chicago with Asiung and his highschool buddy. The highlight of the trip is the Field Museum visit, which is located by the Adler Planetarium. We managed to see the big lion from the Ghost and the Darkness, preserved in the Field Museum.... read more

North America » United States » Missouri » St Louis March 16th 1999

Like anyone said, before heaven, one needs to go through hell. Or somekind of purgatory, where one can cleanse his/her sins. This was exactly what we had to experience driving down to St. Louis, Missouri from Ames, Iowa. With no direct major interstate or highway between the two, we tried to fit five guys in one sedan and politeness dissolved pretty quicky to achieve personal comfort. There were many fart bombs dropped, but nonetheless, we were bonding very quickly and had a blast. The famous landmark of St. Louis is the Gateway Arch. From what I've read, the Arch was completed in 1965, when the city decided to revitalize a rundown industrial area along the Mississippi River. As suggested by its name, St. Louis gateway arch symbolizes a connection between the eastern and western coasts of ... read more

Asia » Japan » Chiba » Narita August 17th 1997

Wow. After a full day transiting in Singapore by myself, I'm on my way to Minneapolis, Minnesota via Tokyo. Have a couple of hours transiting in Narita - Tokyo, so I started to reflect on what has been going on for the past couple days. I feel so insecure about everything, maybe because this is my first time go abroad by myself. No mommy or daddy or anybody around me, showing me around the immigrations or transiting between flights. Or maybe because I know my life will be changed forever from this point on. Or maybe since I'm carrying a lot of cash. LOTS of money, which I found out a little too late that this amount of cash to carry around is illegal in most country, including the United States of America. On the other ... read more
