Arrived in Bangkok this morning, early. They got us up at six'ish and the train got in Bangkok central Station at 7:10. Took my time to hike ~ an hour to the Dutch embassy and got some breakfast at diverse stands and a bakery. At first, I found d the sewery smell a bit overwhelming, but I got used to it. Made some pictures. Even saw a crocodile or lizard swimming in one of the cana.. Make that open sewers. Dutch embassy was not too helpful, due to the fact that the passport was not really 'lost'. I had to take my own council. Nata, by this time, had already offered to send it to me today, so I decided to try to get a train ticket to kanchanaburi without it. The railway is not connected ... read more

So today was the day I went to return to Chiang Mai by scooter. To make sure everything went smoothly, I woke up early and was on my scooter at 9:30 or so. I felt I was getting quite adapt at scootering, so I was looking forward to the trip. The idea was, that if I arrived as quickly as it seemed I was going, I'd have time to see Doi Suthep, the temple on the mountain, I wanted to mountainbike to, but didn't, on the last day in Chiang Mai. On my way there, I ran into Alice, on her own scooter. I was going just a bit faster, but couldn't pass on the busy road, at that time, so I stayed a bit behind. Wasn't even sure it was her, until I signaled to ... read more

Today, I got up relatively early and got to the starting place of Pai Canyon. Brian, one of the guys that has been here for a while, knew the name and location. So by 10:00 I was ready to go, at the start of the trip. People describe it as a 3.5h jungle trek, with a waterfall at the end. At the start, I met up with Anne-Katerina, who I met in a previous hostel in Chiang Mai, and Mona. I passed them on the scooter (I'm getting really proficient) a bit earlier and they just arrived at the small parking lot, when I was ready to leave. The nice trip took us about 3h to the waterfall and only 5 minutes before reaching the end, we were passed by a girl that ran the whole ... read more

The blog has been quiet for a couple of days. I enjoyed this place a lot :) Pai is sort of a hippy village in the jungle. This is most visible in style of clothes. More dreadlocks and accessoires than anywhere :) Found a nice hostel called 'the pai circus hostel'. You might now, I quite like doing stuff with poi, juggling, contact, staff, acrobatics. And they have most of that. Just haven't seen any circus lessons (everyday between 4and 6!), luckely, there were some other people playing poi and other games. Apart from meeting interesting people, I did a guided tour of the local landmarks..It was way too touristy in the end. You just get on the bus with a couple of others and they'll drive you to point #1, get you your tickets . ... read more

So. On to Pai! And to learn how to drive a powerful scooter in the hectic Chiang Mai traffic. On a route which is described as 'long, adventurous, scenic'. Oh and that lots of foreign tourists would crash there. The streets are supposedly filled with people in bandages. .. On my way to Aya (45m-1h walk) I saw two police funnels, where people got tickets. I decided on another route, but had some trouble following. Decided against moving lanes to get my right turn and kept moving straight. Switched to the other side of the street when traffic was lighter and took the left turn. Did some more of that at first and ended up taking the outside of the inner city ring in the longer direction, because traffic was easier and a warned man should ... read more

Arrived safely in Pai today o/ Which was a bit of an ordeal. I first went and walked to a place where I could buy traintickets. For the nighttrain to Bangkok, on monday. Then to 'aya' company, that supposedly had a good deal: hire a scooter for a day and turn it in, at pai. They will bring your luggage separately. Sooo.. I arrived there at the end of the morning (still jetlagged, couldn't sleep, even used a sleeping pill and slept until 8 or do. Took me two more hours to sort my bags, shower and get out. Then some breakfast and more talking to the owner called 'Big' about where to go. (interestingly, I had my second conversation with a random experienced traveler at the bakery. This one from Lebanon. (learned that there's about ... read more

Slept until 6:00, planned, slept some more, planned and slept until 14:00. went out for food and planned until the bakery closed. Skipped my original intention to hire a mountainbike and go up doi suthep, the mountain with the temple. Might do it later. Instead, finished exploring Chiang Mai and visited the night bazaar and got myself some new leather sandals, pants and shirt. ... read more

Some pics from my walk from the airport to the hostel. Aparently, this part of Chiang Mai is a bit like a village, relatively big houses with a yard or fence. A lot of green. A lot of concrete though. If not for the strange script and plant sorts, you'd think you were in a small southern European village. ... read more
