Geo: -30.7477, 121.472Kalgoorlie is another huge town 31,000 people and most of the buildings are old but well kept. The town is very green which is surprising as they depend on a lot of water via a pipeline from Perth 650km away. The town is very much a mining town and there are so many shops here. The shops along the main street are all under cover with bull nose verandahs. We took a look at the Superpit from the lookout. It is enormous and we are taking a tour into the pit on Monday so that should be good.Mount Charlotte is the local lookout and contains the reservoir for the town water. Not far from town is the Two Up shed and it is still used today. Check out the loo's. No roof but at least ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Merredin June 14th 2013

Geo: -31.4821, 118.279We left Cervantes with sunny skies and decided to keep driving until we had had enough. This took us past Merredin and arriving at a free camp the other side of Southern Cross. These free camps are managed by WA and most are huge. They have toilets and seating, loads of secluded area for vans and most have camp fire sites. It finally started to rain that really fine shitty drizzle and after living in a warmer climate for 7 weeks it was darn cold. Out came the ugg boots and jumpers. We were excited to have a camp fire so we got out our rain jackets and sat there in the rain for awhile. Finally we had to admit defeat and go inside. No power so no heater. We watched a movie and then ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Cervantes June 13th 2013

Geo: -30.5036, 115.07We got into Cervantes which is a small fishing town (mainly cray fishing) quickly set up the van and then headed out to the Pinnacles Desert in the Nambung National Park. Wow it is an amazing place. You need a national park pass but we had bought one for the Bungle Bungles so it cost nothing for us to get in or ($11 per car). You can drive your car through on a one way track and there are lots of park bays to get out and look or walk around. The area is huge with thousands of limestone pinnacles formed years ago. Some reach heights of 2 metres thick and 5 metres high. It is hard to describe the area without seeing it.We went to the Lookout and also Lake Thetis which has some ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Geraldton June 11th 2013

Geo: -28.7731, 114.611We have been watching the weather now for a few days (since we had TV again) and they keep forecasting rain, but we woke again to blue skies and sunshine. David is still in shorts but it is getting cooler the further south we go.Geraldton is huge with a population of 40,000. That is more people than we have seen in 7 weeks! They even have a Target!!! The vibe here is very active and becoming cosmopolitan with renovations to the foreshore and building massive homes on every vantage point available. Geraldton is very hilly and the amount of money spent on some retainer walls would pay for a house. The port is enormous and there have been 6 huge ships out on the horizon and more in the port.We took a look at the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri June 10th 2013

Geo: -27.7106, 114.164For some stupid reason we set the alarm (6.30) to get an early start for Kalbarri. That is going to take some getting used to again. It was another sunny day and we were sorry to leave Denham, but excited to see another town. Kalbarri is a beautiful tidy town with a population of 2000. The beach is much more rugged than we have seen before but it is stunning with red cliffs and patches of red sand. There were so many oysters on the rocky shores. The whole area has easy access to the beaches for fishing, surfing, swimming and even driving on the beach (no we didn't drive on it).Unfortunately the road to Z-Bend and Natures Window was closed for road works until October which is the whole peak season and seemed a ... read more

Geo: -25.9279, 113.534On the way to Denham (population 800) we took a detour to visit the Hamelin Pool which is a large shallow bay containing thousands of Stromatolites. They are some primitive life form which apparently scientists say helped create earth by increasing oxygen levels. They take hundreds of years to grow and you can still see the wagon tracks through them from when the farmers loaded wool onto ships. We pulled into Denham to find we had one of the best sights in the park (we thought so). Great view and large site with minimal traffic. What more could we ask for. Day one saw us out and about to view the local sights. We went to Eagle Bluff where you can see manta rays, sharks, dugongs, sea turtles etc. but like the camels in the ... read more

Geo: -24.8837, 113.657Woke again to blue skies and sunshine. Gee we are going to miss this weather. We had 360+ kms to drive today but we had to call in to see Coral Bay on the way. What an extraordinary place. We could have spent a week there no problems. Its like a little bit of paradise shut away from everything. It is on the Ningaloo marine park and the reef forms a natural lagoon with crystal clear water and white sand. The reef is about 300 meters off the beach. There is a small shopping area where we had our pie and cake fix after a walk along the beach. Hmmm maybe we should have done it the other way round.Well we had stayed longer than planned which made us late getting into Carnarvon, about ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Exmouth June 6th 2013

Geo: -21.9277, 114.126Hi everyone,We had such a long trip from Ningaloo to Exmouth (about 1 hours drive). We called into most of the camps at Ningaloo along the way. Exmouth is a small town but the building of new suburbs and homes astounds us. There does not seem to be much here as in mining but they have built a huge marina and very posh homes around it much like Hindmarsh Island at Victor. There is a Naval Base here but that seems to be fairly self contained. We are only staying one night here but we are so excited to actually have our gadgets working, to have power, to not worry about water, to do the washing(sad I know) but the bets bit is to have TV tonight. YaY.We tried to visit the beach here ... read more

Geo: -21.9227, 114.005Sunday saw us up early and leaving Onslow with its grey clouds and wind. We could see in the distance a beautiful blue sky and as we had 300+kms to drive we were hoping that would be around Ningaloo. The winds that day were very strong and blew the van all over the place. We finally arrived at Cape Range National Park where Ningaloo is located and set up.The marine park is very long but there are only a few campsites in each section. I guess the park allows about 60 campers in at any one time but they are spread out in allotted parks with volunteers as camp hosts to maintain some decorum. We were at Tulki which is about halfway down and can hold about 11 campers. For the unlucky ones that haven't booked, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Onslow June 1st 2013

Geo: -21.6363, 115.112Wow there is sooo much going on up this way. There is a huge salt works here with its own jetty. They load the boats via a very long conveyor belt straight along the jetty onto the ship. There is also a boom with gas and the whole town has been taken over by construction/mining/salt workers. We were lucky to book into this park as it has about 50 or more dongas for workers. There is also 3 very large boats in the harbour which house workers and vans everywhere. Apparently this park had about 50 van sites before this boom, now they have about 19 sites left. They are building 60 apartments and heavens only knows what else. The beach is amazing. Millions of shells and when the surf goes over them it makes ... read more
