Morning comes and again relieves me from the agony of unsuccesful sleep. I am very much glad to pack my gear and move on, even though I know that our next night will be spent somewhere in the desert. We have a simple breakfast consisting of (you guessed it) tea, bread and noodles. Rustam arrives with the UAZ jeep and we pack our belongings and remaining water back into the trunk. We also bring along two matresses and some bedsheets from the hotel. It is a beautiful sunny morning, and already it is starting to get hot. We begin the day by inspecting the sights in and around Moynaq, starting with the nearby fish canning factory. It used to employ several hundred, running three shifts around the clock, canning and distributing various kinds of locally caught ... read more

After giving up mosquito swatting around 2.30 and fruitless attempts at coherent sleep in this bake oven I am finally rescued by the first morning light. Otabek has had bedside visits by the little suckers too, and he looks about the way I feel. We moan and groan a bit before getting some sausage and eggs for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Today's agenda has one item; we are to meet up with Rustam early morning for a drive to the airport. We'll then do the survey flight over the southern part of the Aral Sea that I have been fantasizing about for months. Getting to the airport is a simple job, and as soon as we arrive the derelict parking lot outside slowly starts buzzing with officials of various caliber from the airport and Aral ... read more

I wake up with a terrible cold and a running nose. Today's plan is to reach Nukus by air, but the plane does not leave until late in the afternoon. I decide to go sightseeing somewhere and inspect my new map, which has some nice colour photos of interesting places, and point the finger towards Kukeldosch Medressah near the Chor-Su bazar and metro station. The first step is actually reaching the metro, and I decide to give it a try on foot. Sure enough it doesn't take that long, but in doing so the heat has my skin soaked with water. Since I practised riding the metro with Shoista yesterday it turns out very easy for me to find the proper transfer point at Pachtakor and switch to the Uzbekistan line. However, my plan is foiled ... read more

After a restless night I am finally allowed to get up and pack for my early flight to Tashkent. The hotel provides a shuttle bus and drops me off at the proper airline counter, not exactly what I had imagined likely for Uzbekistan Airways. Check in is rapid, not too many travellers about, but my lacking a proper visa raises some questions. I explain and show to the clerk and two embassy affiliated men present at the gate that my travel agent has prepared a visa support letter for a standard visa on arrival. Yeah, right. They are not convinced. One of the guys grabs his walkie talkie and disappears with all my papers for some 20 minutes. I later learn that he's been in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. All checks out fine ... read more

My room at the Malika

I am happy to check out of the Pradiphat hotel and transfer to the Comfort Suites Airport hotel; it may be a small step for one man, but it is a giant step towards my encounter with the Aral Sea. Even though I have a printed map with directions of how to find the hotel, the taxi driver has a really hard time finding it. We end up driving all the way to the airport and then turn back towards town again until finding the correct exit. The weather continues to be mildly boring, and it starts raining as we finally get there. Although I am at first disappointed to get a room that is not facing the airport I discover that instead I get the views of the departing airliners climbing into the sky, which ... read more

Having spent three nights at the Karnmanee I have not really been making much use of my time in Bangkok. I had planned to see my friend Kay but ended up spending more time on my own than anticipated. I like to hang around the shops and eateries at Pradiphat Road, a street which has most of the things you could need, and is blissfully devoid of tourist mobs and hawkers. In the evenings a myriad of food stalls come out and it is nice to walk around to pick up spicy snacks and fresh fruit. The Skytrain is another piece of engineering that I really appreciate. It offers easy access to areas otherwise locked up in what can sometimes be maddening traffic jams. Watching the traffic though, is a pastime that rarely gets old to ... read more

Well, the horrible flight finally came to an end and I was jumping out of the plane like a man pardoned from a long prison sentence. I immediately set course for the various information booths to try to pick up a Bangkok Airport time table, which proved a fruitless attempt. All counters showed me their copy and sent me in the direction of the bookshop on the 2nd floor, which naturally had never heard of the item in question. I decide to be a bit proactive, skip about the timetable and head directly to the Thai office to make a reservation for Denpasar on August 4. I imagine a line of 500 people in front of me, but there is no one waiting, so this will be a smooth affair. I ask for a ticket to ... read more

"...or that burrito I had for breakfast" T-7 Hours. I got a confirmation for a room on the night of July 25th, which I will spend at the Comfort Suites Airport Bangkok Hotel. I need to get sorted on the packing, pay my bills and do some last minute errands, but all in all nothing to panic about. As the taxi arrives I am actually prepared to go, and make it without further hassle. Flights are pretty much on schedule too, and it is a sleepy day over at terminal two in Stockholm. Even duller is Vantaa airport, with only one scheduled flight left for the evening. I walk around the concourse for a few hours until it is time to board the plane. This is when things go pear shaped. I have not been paying ... read more

T-23 Hours. Doing the last chores at the office was a mildly unenthusiastic affair. I left early to return to the bank and retry my Uzbek payment. Upon arrival the clerk said "oh, it is that one, we've been looking a bit at it already". As in the daily office joke or what I wonder. I also made final preparations for paying up for my September bout to Bhutan, my bank account feels rather blasted right now, fortunately payday isn't too far away. I then headed to the regional hospital for an appointment with a doctor to go through any vaccinations required. The waiting room was chock full and loads of young people were sitting around exchanging their anticipations of tropical beaches, long stays abroad and of course the dismay at having to take four shots ... read more

T-40 hours. Well, it is good to know that I never seem to learn from experience. Here I am again, juggling all the last minute activities. I draw the nicest of schedules weeks in advance, make research yet somehow always get stuck on trivialities and formalities. Apart from trying to tie up some knots at work before I leave for a month I am also trying to finish payments for my two outstanding trips. I went to my local bank today to transfer money to my trusted agent in Uzbekistan. Of course it didn't help that I took careful steps filling out all relevant forms when the clerk cannot even spell the country name. It also came as little surprise that the National Bank of Uzbekistan Samarkand branch office was not listed in their computer system, ... read more
