No, I don't mean that I am "a broad" as in Jersey slang for sizzling lady, I mean that I am "abroad." Yes, I'm overseas dear family and friends. After traveling to Britain in high school there was no squelching my dreams of living there in the future. I have dragged my flip flops through the suffocating swamp of paperwork, closed post offices, deadlines, "application fees," and nay-sayers and have emerged with a green glint in my winking eye and a prepatory Guinness in my belly. I send a huge hootin' hollerin' "hello" from the Southwest coast of England to those stumbling blocks in their desk chairs and an eternally echoing "thank you" to special professors who had the optimism and drive to help make this happen. I am finally here!

Hello everyone! I´m so sorry that I haven´t been blogging lately. I know I have thousands of fans out there waiting. ;) Anyway, I am on the brink of another great night out in Spain but wanted to use this opportunity to drop you a few facts and say hello! So, I´ve been in Spain for about a week now and its been fabulous. This morning I had a fresh fruit shake and then went to the pool. It is insanely hot here, more than Tennessee. I am sunburned of course as well. I am staying with my two roommates from Exeter in their homes. They have all been very nice and my Spanish, i have to say, is improving rapidly. I am surprised at how much you can learn in a few days! I´ve ordered ... read more

Nothing quite new here lately, life is carrying on. I'm getting even more acclimated to the city here, probably due to my getting jobs. I had two jobs when I came back from Christmas break. In one I served as a waitress in a Moroccan restaurant called Al Farid in the square of the town Cathedral. It's a great place, to eat that is. There are low tables and cushions for lounging while you smoke water pipes of flavored tobacco and have Moroccan coffee. The ceilings are draped in fabric and candles are lit every night. Working there was not the best decision I've made in my life. At least I found out that I'm not a waitress. When I started tearing up because people were cold and wanted to leave, I knew it was time ... read more

Prague and then homeward bound!

At 11:45 pm on Jan. 2nd, Jason and I boarded a bus for Prague! After about a six hour ride, we got off the bus in a dark bus station and I thought I knew the way to the hostel. Of course, the map in my head looked nothing like the real thing, so we got lost. We ended up walking for about an hour and then hopping a tram without paying (following the advice of a local). Finally, we got to our hostel, "Hostel Elf" and was told that our room wouldn't be ready until 11am. So, from around 7am, we sat our exhausted bodies in the lobby and tried to sleep. At the precise moment that my booty touched the worn out leather of the couch, the hostel owner decided it was Czech Pop ... read more

To Berlin for the New Year!

On the way to Berlin from Oslo, I had the pleasure of sitting next to a Norwegian rock band called "Slayer." They were entertaining in all of their dyed black hair, forty year old trying to be twenty glory. Jason picked me up from the airport and I met his Berlin host family. They are very welcoming and funny. The mother and father studied in Bulgaria for four years so they are rather worldly and relaxed. I had my own room that was painted sunshine yellow with a balcony. There is a kakashka cat that bit my toes and felt the need to slide down my legs with his claws underneath the table. I hated that cat. However, there was a lovely grandmother who always spoke with me in German. There was a lengthy conversation about ... read more

Christmas in Norway

Before going to Oslo for Christmas, I spent a few days in Frankfurt. I met up with friends who had a long layover on their way back to America and we ate and then slept in the airport. It was interesting to wake up every three hours and watch the clock hands change positions. It was also strange to be surrounded by different people at your feet every time you wake up. The next night I stayed with a German friend who fed me soup and let me have my first real bath in three and 1/2 months. Frankfurt is very industrial and not my favorite city. The flight to Oslo was uneventful, except for the gorgeous sunset and the applause that accompanied the landing. Apparently, some Europeans like to clap at the end of a ... read more

A weekend in Salzburg

I got to Austria on the 17th of Dec., travelled from 2:15 am after running from a dance club to catch my bus. I realized only after I got on that I booked my bus to the wrong airport. I also forgot to print my train ticket from Frankfurt to Salzburg. I freaked out until I got to an internet cafe at 6:30am and printed the things I needed, then waited for the bus ticket office to open and changed my ticket. I travelled six hours from Frankfurt and was greeted by Genevi, an amazing girl I met in NYC. We made our way to her Austrian boyfriend's apartment which sits on one of the main streets in Salzburg. Behind the red curtains is a windowsill and in front of them is a futon on which ... read more

Surfing in December

December 12th 2004

This weekend the international students (some of them anyway) spent a wonderful time in St. Ives. It's a little village on the west coast of England in Cornwall. We stayed at a surfer backpacker's hostel. The town seems to be the destination of surfers. And, yes, I SURFED!!!! It was GORGEOUS. As soon as we arrived, we went and rented "gear." I wove through little cobblestone alleyways with a surfboard that I couldn't even carry myself. In a beautiful bay surrounded by cliffs and jagged rocks with a tiny chapel on the top of a hill, I squeezed into a wet suit (which doesn't keep the water out by the way, was I the only one that thought that?) and ran into the icy icy water. It was invigorating and really fun. I only surfed for ... read more

I had a great flight into Amsterdam, so excited that I could hardly sleep. I waited for Jason's train and had a snack from these nifty snack-wall machines. You put in one euro and the glass door opens revealing a tasty morsel that is something fried. Seeing a friend from home was a great feeling; I felt more comfortable and safe than in a while. We began our journey through this incredibly beautiful city with a visit to a "coffeeshop" called 420... yeah. We then wandered around Damrak Square which seems to be a touristy place. THe architecture in this city is its best feature, by far. Surrounding us always were unbelievable shopping centers that could pass for castles. These hover over quaint canals which reflect golden lights found all over the city. These canals also ... read more

Ottery St. Mary is on fire

The scent of burning firewood hung in the air as screaming crowds gave their support to these brave men of Ottery St. Mary. They held the large task of entertaining the city by carrying gigantic tar-filled flaming barrels on their backs through crowds of people, in honor of Guy Faulks Day (a traitor burned at the stake for trying to burn the House of Parliment in the 14th century). These barrels are extremely heavy, to the point where the men have to be directed because they cannot see where they are going! Thousands of people attend this celebration; it has been occurring since the 17th century. They have several barrel runs that start from different pubs around town. After passing the most gigantic bonfire I\'ve ever seen, we gathered in the square for the main ones. ... read more

Just a Good Day, that's all

Today was great! I think it was partly the weather. It was sunny for almost the entire day, which is very rare. I haven't seen sun in probably a week until today. Today was also the day that my graphics class turned in all of our work from the past six weeks for assessment. It felt so great to have that off of my shoulders, though I'm nervous about assignments getting harder. EEK! So, with my work turned in, I left school early and bought a pair of shoes and a shirt all for thirty dollars. A good buy I'm pretty sure. As an end to a good day, tonight in yoga class I finally did a headstand (with a little instructor help =)) for the first time! It feels good to advance a little bit ... read more
