Like I wrote before, we visited Wusutu park, located just north of Hohhot on the slopes of the mountain range, on our day off with a small group. It was a lovely day to get out of the city, temperatures in the second half of September are still in the upper 20's (although it does really cool down at night) and the park itself was quite nice. After entering the gate, you walk down the lane where at the end the steps start that lead you to halfway up. Along the way are two or so places to stop for a refreshing drink or a game of pool, but more on that later. Then, at what you could call the first of many little hill tops, you have the possibility of climbing into a tiger's mouth... ... read more

Slight change of plans since my last blog; The local buses from Hohhot to Erdos were comparitively expensive, so we decided not to go there. I do hope to visit the Wusutu national forest park, located just north of the city though, so soon an update on that. The biggest change in plans is our idea to visit the bordertown with Mongolia; Erenhot. This is where the large dinosaur museum (a new one is being built right as we speak) is located which we wanted to visit... Well, now we're not just going there, we're even going to visit Mongolia itself! The visa apllication, which we did right here at the local Mongolian consulate, seemed at first to be a bit of a problem, not having a letter of invitation, but with the help of a good ... read more

After having spent 9 months in Hohhot, it was about time for me to go and see the grasslands which Inner Mongolia province is known for. On Monday morning the weather wasn't looking too good at first, in fact, the last few weeks we had loads of rain here in Hohhot. (something to do with Beijing not wanting any rain during the games...?) But luckily later on it cleared up so the next staff trip was on its way to Xilamuren, the nearest of the three grasslands near Hohhot. It was a lovely drive to the north of the city, where the road wound its way up the mountains. Due to all the rain these last weeks, the mountains were actually quite green, and it gave some nice views of the road and valleys we came ... read more

On the 8th of July it was Hohhot's turn to welcome the torch. We went to the central square pretty early in the morning, and twice it seemed the parade was going to go past the square, with all people suddenly moving to one side of it. But actually, the torch hadn't even been lit yet. It was shown live on the big screen but unfortunately, the exact route was never made public and was also changed at the last moment to prevent anything bad happening. So actually, nobody really knew where and when the torch would be. So we never actually saw the bloody thing! The whole parade didn't even last longer than an hour.... It was still fun to watch the people on Xinhua square moving about in similar T-shirts with 'I love China' ... read more

From Mohan, on the border with Laos it was an easy bus ride of about 4 hours to Jinghong the capital city of what is called the Xishuangbanna region of southern Yunnan province. The name actually comes from Thai language: Sip Sawng Panna meaning 12 rice growing districts. Remarkably for Chinese standards, only one third of Xishuangbanna's population consists of Han Chinese, splitting up the rest in one third Dai people and another third in a variety of minorities, that can also be found in parts of northern Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. Unfortunately for me, the rain was relentless, so a lot of exploring was out of the question. I got as far as the bridge crossing the Mekong, which made me really wanting to explore the whole length of it once. It's pretty amazing how ... read more

I arrived in Luang Nam Tha after what was quite a pleasant bus ride actually. No fancy airconditioned bus, just an old fashioned rattling bus with the windows open, just the way it should be and how I like it. The ride from Luang Prabang was quite mountainous for the lager part of it. Very spectacular, especially with the rain pounding on the windows for the better part of the day. At a certain point we all had to get out and help dragging a fallen tree off the road, for the bus to continue. It took about 9 hours in total, not too bad. I got some wonderful accomodation, I believe it was 40.000 Kip for what was basically a budget hotel room. Attached bathroom with hot shower and western toilet, a massive bed and ... read more

After the adventurous arrival in Luang Prabang by Lao airlines flying in from Hanoi, Vietnam, it seemed a likely possibility for a while that I was going to have to sleep under a bridge somewhere..... For anyone traveling the vietnam - Laos route; STOCK UP ON KIP BEFORE HAND! Apparently they don't want low currencies like the Dong, so seeing that I arrived in L.P. with just Dong, I was in a bit of a bad situation there. One of my fellow passengers on Lao airlines lent me a few dollars so I could have a baquette. After a bit of asking around and searching I luckily found a travel agency that wanted to exchange my money for a reasonable rate. I was so happy to be back in L.P. though, the mix of French colonial ... read more

By now I have arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos, after what can I call a bumpy ride through the sky, but more about that later on. Let me go back in time a little to the beach in Danang, Vietnam. And what a beautiful beach it is. I managed to take my motorbike out on a few occasions but did spend most of my time on the beach. The first day I headed towards the headland at the northern end of China beach; Monkey Island. A beautiful brandnew coastal road follows the side of the hill, with stunning views over Danang and China beach. The next day, after a massive and gorgeous English breakfast I headed to the south end of town, to the so-called marble mountains. Spend some time there climbing over hills and checking ... read more

Finally, a well deserved 17-day vacation. On the 1st of June, after finishing work at 17:00, I flew to Beijing where I stayed for a day. My god it's big..... On the 3rd I flew Shenzhen airlines to Nanning, in the far south of China, just accross the border with Vietnam. And that was also my destination. Nanning was nice enough and the room at the hotel for 90 Yuan was a bargain. The next morning at 08:00 I took the local train to Pinxiang which took only 3 1/2 hours. The border formalities went fairly quickly (I picked up my Vietnam visa at the embassy in Nanning) and walked through the massive arch that marked the border. On the other side a taxi took us to the town of Lang Son where a bus was ... read more

Ofcourse we all know about the horrible eartquake that destroyed so many people's lives in the south of China. I happened to be on Qinhua square in central Hohhot for the first of three consecutive days of national mourning, on which each day at 14:28, the exact time of the earthquake in Sichuan province, three minutes of 'silence' is held to commemorate the lives lost. In China this is done by sounding the alarm and all traffic sounding their horns. It was actually a good experience to be there at that time, It really felt like this huge populous country was united for three minutes, all thinking about the same thing. I just wanted to share that with anyone interested, unfortunately, the video quality of my new camera isn't too good. I also added some pics ... read more
