Georgia and Byron are always excited around 2 April - it's Simone's birthday! With unusual restraint and quiet for first thing in the morning, they added their special touches to the birthday cards, gifts and surprise breakfast. Then there was the joyous bedroom invasion, with both diving on to the bed with squeals approximating wishes for a happy birthday. At one level it seems unfair to unleash festivities on someone so recently slumbering, especially when there's a camera involved, but there seems no fitting alternative, especially to our two enthusiastic cheerleaders! Georgia takes great delight in giving. She is attentive as cards are opened and read, and relishes the hugs that follows. Byron is always there too, but sometimes he'd like the process sped up a bit. And Simone's appreciation of a book voucher is something ... read more

By the time Byron turned three, he was already quite his own man. He loves books and stories, and those stories become a wonderful part of his life. Often, there's a treasure map in the house, and Byron is on a mission to find it. Or his helicopter rescues people, while evading the 'baddies', which Byron is inclined to kill despite our exhortations that tolerance is a good thing. Byron's imagination can turn anything into a phone. First it was mainly remote controls and other electronic looking things. But now it is simply whatever is at hand - robots, cars and even drink bottles. Perhaps that's a sign of things to come, and Byron is just ahead of the curve. For such a sweet little fellow, he has quite a temper. Perhaps it is just a ... read more

After weeks of anticipation by Georgia and Bryon, and endless speculation concerning the treats Father Christmas would bring them, Christmas Day and its associated mayhem finally arrived. Byron had made an early morning raid on our bed, but Georgia had gone into the lounge and discovered the brightly covered treasure trove. Georgia and Byron concluded that Santa had been and left a swag of gifts. He also drank the Scotch that we put out for him, so I hope he wasn't in charge of the sled afterwards. Every gift opened seemed to be their favourite, but it was the scooters that G&B took outside to road test in the garden. One of our neighbours also got a scooter, and he joined our crew in their F1 qualifying laps. Joggy arrived and we had our family breakfast. ... read more

It was fun to be back in Melbourne for Christmas. The previous three in Hong Kong had been wonderful, but this year was a chance to release Georgia and Byron on an unsuspecting wider family. Georgia and Byron helped Simone set up the tree. It was modest in size, but not in importance. It was a magnet for gifts that started to accumulate for friends and family, adding to the anticipation of a happy Christmas morning. Byron took to singing Christmas carols in his sweet little voice. Simone responded by shelving any restraint she may have had in relation to the number of gifts he and Georgia deserved. Georgia loved Myer's Christmas windows, which were usually surrounded by happy families. We resorted to early morning raids to beat the crowds and trips to DJ’s where reindeers ... read more

The early morning queue of several hundred people showed that ours had not been an original idea to visit the zoo during school holidays. And so before we had the chance to see the world’s diversity of animals, we had a taste of the rich diversity of Australians. Inside, children rushed around excitedly, while parents explained things, answered questions, or like me, made things up to disguise their limited knowledge. The zoo is too big to see everything in one visit, so we chose a route past key animals. The big cats are remarkable for being impressive even when seemingly comatose. Byron gave the lions and tigers his best ferocious cat impersonation, which is eerily like his dragon, dinosaur, and monster impersonations. The big cats, perhaps recognising him as one of their own, seemed quite relaxed. ... read more

Paradise comes in many forms, but for me the best features blue skies, the ocean, palm trees, balmy nights, Simone and two little nymphs who are equal parts gremlins and angels. Arriving at night and peering through the mosquito netting at the sleeping Georgia and Byron has to be one of the greatest rewards for enduring 30 hours of economy class travel. Sleeping deeply in their angel guises, it is impossible to resist hugging them. Georgia semi-woke to say "hello", and in that instant there's no doubt that paradise was reclaimed. If only those instants were life-times! The following morning was less serene, more boisterous and a lot of fun. Simone had convinced Georgia and Byron that whenever I turned up would be Father's Day, and so, even though it had officially occurred a few weeks ... read more

A cute little girl just got cuter. Georgia turned four years old on 8 October. Simone had found the perfect gift – a doll’s house. Armed with a previous degree in Ikea, we put it together the night before. Not surprisingly, Georgia made an early appearance in our room, closely followed by Byron. Birthday hugs and the reading of cards followed, something that G continues to take a real interest in, even though she knows somewhere in the apartment is a cache of gifts just waiting to be unwrapped. When Georgia got into the lounge she had to race Byron to get to the doll’s house and the brightly wrapped gifts. Together they tore the paper and examined the gifts. Simone had thoughtfully put some gifts for Byron amongst them, greatly reducing the potential for ... read more

The Australian Open - In June

Melbourne in June is not warm. Nor is it dry. It is therefore a credit to the city that it is nonetheless a wonderful place to be. G & B have slipped into the path of happy Melburnians. In autumn and winter they both give the patriotic cry “Go Saints”, proving they are truly of the city, and can deal with the barbs that go with supporting a team programmed for consistent failure. They also know that disappointment in football is compensated by the delights of decent coffee the likes of which Starbucks could only dream of. Sitting in Pelegrini’s, savouring the smell of fresh pasta and Vitoria coffee, one can see a photo on the wall of Kevin Sheedy holding a Richmond Premiership Cup – proof that anything is possible. And in the parks, ... read more

The nights of Tanah Lot

In June, Bali experienced a different sort of Australian invasion – Simone, Georgia and Byron teamed up with Jenn, Jamie, Zoe and Billie, for a pleasant time in Tanah Lot, the non-Kuta beauty of Bali. Sort of an Eat, Pray, Love, except with sensible, likable people. The beach shack turned out to be something on a different scale from the fibro cottage in Dromana. Known in unAustralian terms as a ‘villa’, the place was pretty comfortable. It’s close to the beach, has a pool and is surrounded by rice paddies and village people who don’t sing ‘YMCA’. It is about as far away from the stress of normal life as you can get. Perhaps surprisingly, there’s much to see in Bali, and Jenn and Jamie made a great adventure of sightseeing and experiencing the pleasures of ... read more

A Melbourne Easter

Easter with the family Easter has religious significance, but when you’re three and a half and two years old like Georgia and Byron, Easter is about the surprise of finding a brightly coloured chocolate egg, and enjoying the company of friends and family. This Easter was a special Melbourne Easter for us. Ingrid organised an Easter egg hunt at her house. Such hunts are usually straight forward affairs, but Ingrid’s garden is five acres, three of which are beautifully landscaped, with a number of discrete and quite different ornamental areas. The remaining two acres are natural Australian bush. This is something of a contrast to the 40 square meters of grass we had in Hong Kong. Unfortunately for us, Kelly and Glenn’s children, Taylor and Cody, both of whom are really popular with Georgia and Byron, ... read more
