3 March 2010 We left port in Las Palmas, the captain came on the PA and announced that it would be a rough night, stating that we would be going into a norwester ,,,,, isn’t that the infamous storms that sailors dread. Once we got outside port, the training wheels were definitely off for Gerrie, swells were 12 ft + . It was worse than a roller coaster, and I haven’t even been on one. Noel faired way better than me, go figure. These winds are associated to another one of the many multiple storms pounding Europe. We have arrived at Funchal, Portugal (most westerly port in our travels) and conditions were kind of mixed, sun, cloud, windy, doesn’t know what it wants to do. The Port at Funchal is rather plain, nowhere in comparison to ... read more

1 March 2010 The ride from Casablanca to Agadir was a rocking time (rocking and rolling all night long, but we survived the ride). We arrived in Agidar to a bright, sunny day and decided not to take a shore excursion at this location. Agadir was almost completely destroyed in 1960 by a large devastating earthquake that killed half of the 30,000 people living here. The old Agadir can be seen on the hills, but has been left as a cemetery / memorial to all that have died here. The new Agadir is located south of the old one and is relatively new because of rebuilding that has taken place since the 1960 earthquake. Noel somehow had pictured sand dunes coming right out to the shore, but in actual fact the hills are covered with sparse ... read more

26 February, 2010 We arrived back in Barcelona to a bright sunny day. We decided not to go on any excursions because we had heard via the news that there was to be a big storm coming through Barcelona and also Noel developed a head cold, so we just spent the day on the ship, moving from place to place as they disinfected the ship, due to all the new passengers coming on board. As it turned out, it was a perfect day, probably in the 70 degree area. (just think for a couple of hours we were almost the sole paying passengers, kinda nice) After the new hoards got on board, the ship was filled to capacity, we got underway at 7:00 pm, off to Casablanca. 27 February 2010 This was a day at sea, ... read more

Europe » Malta » Malta » La Valletta February 24th 2010

23 February, 2010 Woke up, had breaky, we are still at sea not expecting to arrive at Malta until 11:00 am this morning. Scenery as we are coming into Malta is beautiful, lots of old buildings, large ships, freighters. Noel is taking lots of pics. Ship finally docked at the City of Valletta, which is the capital of Malta. Valletta looked like a fortified City in the past, with lots of forts, palaces and very old buildings. Inside the harbour tucked away in one of the many small inlets, we came across a very futuristic and highly technically advanced sailing ship, maybe it is Malta’s secret weapon, for what I don’t know. We left the ship on foot for our own excursion. We were hassled by about 50 taxi drivers and at least a dozen ... read more

21 February 2010 Woke up in Alexandria, Egypt to the calling for holy prayer, I felt an urge to bow to the East. It was sunny, warm, no clouds, a little yellow dust in the air. Down for a early breaky then off on our tour (this was to be 12 ½ hrs). The Port was very clean, however once we left port one side was clean, the other side was dirty. We found our 3 hour trip through Alexandria to Giza Plateau was very dirty. Our guide was a woman who was born and raised and still resides in Cairo. She gave us a narrative of the history of Egypt. Once we arrived in Cairo, we saw that their irrigation canals were also being used in part as a garbage dump. We hear that the ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Ephesus February 20th 2010

19th Feb, 2010 Today when we arrived in sunny (temp in the 70’s) Izmir, Turkey, just like when we arrived in Greece, we noticed dust that looked like smog, but the locals call it yellow dust, but apparently it comes from Africa and is blown across the Mediterranean. This dust obstructs your long range vision and the landscape looks hazy. From Izmir we made our way to a small town near Ephesus. Our first stop was a carpet weaving store where they make handmade carpets from wool, cotton and the silkworm. They tried to sell us one hand woven silk carpet for $7,000.00, shipped free to our door, sounded a little expensive, however when you consider that it took a year to make and contained 400 double knots per square inch, who are we to say ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens February 18th 2010

17th Feb This morning we woke up to a sunrise something we hadn’t seen so far. Temperature is much better too, not to hot, not to cold, just right. This is the way I had pictured the Med. We are en route to Greece and will arrive Thursday morning. We had breakfast as we approached the strait of Messina between the boot of Italy and Sicily. We photographed the area including the infamous Mount Etna. In the afternoon we headed out on the deck for some sun, temp in the mid 60,s Felt so good, the wind was gusting and the ship had some mild side to side motion, the captain had deployed the stabilizers before hand, which made the ride quite smooth given the size of the waves. After being on the deck for a ... read more

Europe » Italy February 16th 2010

15th February 2010. We started our day at 7:00 a.m. with a trip to the Garden Restaurant for breaky. Then Noel was back to the state room to do the finer points on the blog, while Gerrie did bingo. No I couldn’t talk Noel into this adventure, “Just couldn’t do it”, I must be losing my touch. This is our first full day on the ship. We have been running around exploring the ship and have been inundated by special deals/offers/bargains/discounts/and one time deals only like, wine, water, next cruise, jewellery and $91.00 for pop for one person (go figure.) Yeah, I got sucked in for this, Noel is a coffee drinker and he is quite content to have his java fix for the day, at no extra cost. You have to stand back and take ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona February 14th 2010

Europe 2010We arrived at Vancouver Airport at 3:30; we didn’t depart until 8:30. The airport was nowhere near as hectic as we thought it would be. Noel being the seasoned traveller that he is and me the novice, I had some reservations about boarding and being on a plane for 9 ½ hrs. KLM Airlines was awesome to fly with, they cater to the passengers, food was great and lots of it. They left on time.......... and arrived early, what a novel concept. I (Noel) couldn’t do the update from Barcelona, technical problems (yeah, like I would be able to fix techie stuff) at the hotel. We are now on the ship just left Barcelona. We are both slowly adapting to the food and jet lag, I guess we are not twenty years old any more.................. ... read more

Testing 123, testing 123.............. The day to depart has arrived. Hopefully everyone on our email list will receive this communication, if you wish to contact us you can do it through this site or send a e-mail to noelc@shaw.ca . We have checked and double checked everything, odds are we are missing something we just don't know it. We will be off to the airport in our limo, actually it we be a Camry driven by Shawn, it's a close second.... We are going to the airport about 4 hours early in the event the the whole Olympic thing has turned the airport into nightmare. I suspect we will get to experience the body scan, that should be fun, sounds like it is much like someone looking at you with x-ray glasses, the alternative is a ... read more
