Europe July 10th 2010

I took my first night train from Venice to Vienna last night and it really truly sucked. Sleeping sitting up is one thing. But sleeping sitting up in a crammed train car with no A/C when it is like literally 85-90 degrees, and the whole place smells because it is so hot...That is another thing. I thought I might die from heat exhaustion. I had to get off the train at every stop just to cool down. And there was no restaurant car on the train, so I had no water either. Luckily I was able to get some from a vending machine at one stop. But all in all I think that was much much worse than sleeping on the floor of a ferry that lasted for 26 hours. Bah! Well I am in Vienna ... read more

I arrived in Venice after 26 hours on a ferry. I think I am truly a traveler now. I had deck passage on the ferry which means I didnt have a cabin or a seat so I just used my bag as a pillow and my sheet for a blanket and slept on the floor. Everyone I met was trying to talk me out of taking that ferry but all in all it was alright. I met some girls that had stayed at the pink Palace hostel too so we all were hanging out talking and had our little set up on the floor. We finally arrived and the girls took off to their hostel and I to mine. They had a pretty central location but my hostel is a campground so I had to take ... read more

I arrived in Corfu early in the morning and was picked up by the pink palace hostels shuttle. When we arrived at the pink palace the check in arrangement was interesting. It felt like summer camp. We were explained the rules, given options for activities, a shot of pink ouzo, and sent off to have breakfast. (ok, so adult summer camp). This hostel is a little weird and I have come to the conclusion that it is somewhere in between a frat party and a cult. They don't allow you to have outside food or alcohol, and they make sure you have everything you need so you don't even have to leave the hostel. They pay the employees 4 euros a DAY, which of coarse goes right back to the bar for water, beer, etc and ... read more

Sorrento/naples I arrived in Naples to catch the cirumvesuviana train to Sorrento. I thought about getting a famous Napoli pizza but the thought of leaving the train station wasn’t appealing. I haven’t heard very nice things about Napoli. So i caught the train, which wasn’t nice either. Hot, smelly, and crowed. I arrived in Sorrento and then to the hostel. What a place! Very modern, beautiful, and has air conditioning! I was so exhausted from my Rome adventures I couldn’t even fathom leaving the hostel that afternoon. So I went to the roof terrace to relax. This was so nice, great view of Sorrento and the surrounding villages and the ocean. I met a few cool people in the hostel. One Australian guy was super cool, and we ended up eating dinner at the hostel together ... read more

I had stayed up so late last night I didnt even bother going to bed. people stay out SO late here! Like the discos close at 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 a.m.!!!! So I got packed and checked out. Then I took a train to Naples (ick!) and then straight to another train to sorrento. So I made it to the hostel and it is prettier and nicer than any hotel I have every stayed in! there is a rooftop terrace with the most goregeous view. And the rooms are SUPER nice. Its called 7 hostel. there is also a restaurant and bar. The really crappy thing is that I realized today that my foot is hurting really too much. I took it pretty easy yesterday so it should have been fine today, but ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome June 28th 2010

I stood in line at Termini train station for 2 hours just to find out that I don't need a reservation for my next 2 trains and therefore did not need to get in line at all! SO.... good to know, but it made my whole day pretty unproductive. I met up with a friend and I thought "man, I think I have seen everything in Rome" but he took me to some churches I hadn't seen and out of the city center walls to have a good cheap pizza! I took it easy in the morning, hostel life is really taxing! I made a few cool friends at the hostel and even a few of the people I knew that worked there are still there. I keep trying to convince them they need a professional ... read more

Roma 1 I left Siena this morning. Man riding the freakin city bus with a huge pack on your back, a messenger bag, and a duffle bag is tough business! I kept bumping into people, and there was no place to sit and no place for my bag (and me) except the aisle. But I made it to the station to get on a bus to Chiusi then a train to Roma! I got my bus ok… But when I got to Chiusi I went to catch my train and I looked at the board and saw Roma, so I went to platform 3. But my train was actually going to Napoli, and stoping in Roma, so essentially I was on the wrong platform and I missed my train. Fortunately for me, two Irish girls did ... read more

Siena!!! Che bella citta! I arrived in Seina, and what a beautiful city! It surrounded by villas and farms and little towns on rolling hillsides! I am staying on just the outskirts of the city, and it is so beautiful! The veiw! The garden! Oh my! I went into the center just for a while today. I was so exhausted! But I walked around the main piazza called Il Campo. Each year in July they have a famous horse race there called palio. This city is much smaller than the others I have visited so far. Much more tranquile! (until someone scores in a world cup game then the noise coming from the bars is quite boisterous!) I also walked to Il Duomo. It was simply breathtaking. And from there I just wandered around wherever it ... read more

well, I'm just hanging around waiting for the pool at my hostel to open... thats right I said pool and hostel in the same sentence! So nice, just wish it opened earlier! Went out today, was sunny and nice! Walked though the city center and ponte veccio again! Suddenly it was like bombs going off. Big booms. Then I realized it was thunder! It started to sprinkle, and i thought, not really enough to get my umbrella out... and as soon as I finished that thought it started to down pour, then hail, then the wind picked up like crazy and I had to duck into a little tratoria for a coffee and wait it out! The thunder was so loud! I was soaked in the 1 minute it took me to get cover!!! But it ... read more

World Cup- My friend Benedetto invited to his friends house to watch the world cup! It was the first game Italy was playing. Wow! I feel like this was something really classic.... watching soccer (the world cup no less) with a bunch of Italians that are getting all excited and yelling... when Italy scored everyone LITERALLY jumped up and cheered! There was pizza, limoncello, grappa, and cigarette smoke... they were quite an entertaining bunch! When we left, i saw something blinking in the darkness and I thought maybe the grappa had gone to my head but benedetto said "oh, la luce" it was a fire fly! I had never seen one before. He said they used be quite common but now there are fewer because of pollution. Today I went to museums! It is impossible to ... read more
