Arkhangelsk Today we are in ARkhangelsk. We had to tender ashore and its was a very difficult route to follow. No tender today We have a real dock. Arkhangelsk is considerably bigger than the other islands we have visited with a larger population. The ground is basically a marsh so construction is very difficult. All of the buildings were originally wood. Many of the houses are still wood. Our guide say older people like to live in wooden structures. The say it is healthier. There is a central heating plant that pipes heat in large pipes to all the houses. This is their idea of “Central heating”. It was a beautiful day with a temperature hovering around 75. n All the Russian young people were in shorts and tee shirts. The large river that runs through ... read more

Yesterday we were in Hammerfest, Norway. Having been there before, we had decided not to get off the ship and instead to work on our MKSAP. This was a fortuitous choice. It was a miserable day. Cold and raining. The high only reached about 48 degrees but it felt colder because it was cloudy. The sun set at 3am and the sun rose at 3 am. I guess it is summer in the far north. Yesterday the engineers had to come and fix our heat. I finally got warm. We had dinner last night with the General Manager, Victor. He is Portuguese. We had a delightful time. Today we are in Murmansk. It is a beautiful day and warmer, about 60 degrees. After lunch we will go ashore and visit the monestary,Alyosha, and the light house. ... read more

Today we are in Alesund along ith the Queen Elizbeth, The Crystal Serenity, Mein Schiff, and the Aida. Needless to say theport was like Ellis Island in the 1890's. We arranged a private tour through the ship. I have reached a stage in life where I just can't stand a bus tour. So Our guide Susan and our drive Leyla met us at the gate to the dock. Its the women in charge to day. We had a lovely new Mercedes to ride in, Dennis's seat was even heated. We decided today we would take the Troll Road and go to the Troll "Wall". It is a long trip. We didn't believe that it would take 8 hours but it did. But the scenery on the way there was beautiful. You go through soaring peaks surrounding ... read more

ULLAPOOL. SCOTLAND Today we are in Ullapool Scotland. Ullapool is located in the extreme northwest corner of Scotland in the Highlands on the coast. It is a bright and sunny day as we sail into Ullapool. It is a beautiful site as we clip into this pristine harbor surround by tall hills and white houses lining the shore. We are gong by coach to Lochinver. This is about 1 hour ride through the highlands. The highlands are really beautiful. I still think on all the stories that are set in this locale. There is some heather on the moor but more gorse. Sheep are plentiful. There are many lochs, she of which are fresh water others are salt water. We come to a stable of an ancient castle called. Ardvreck, the home of the McLeod. It ... read more

BELFAST NORTHERN IRELAND today we took a private tour of Belfast. We had a very nice driver, Phillip, a young man with five children. That’s what became apparent very quickly. The Irish, at least in Belfast, are reproducing at an astounding rate. Every woman of childbearing age is carting are at least one child under the age of 5. Anyway, I digress. We decided to drive around norther Ireland to get a lay of the land so to speak. We left Belfast and headed East along the head of Strangford Lock (or Lough as they spell it) to Bally water. We passed through many mall seaside towns all of which wee quite lovely. We then went to Mount Stewart Park and house. The Stewarts were originally from Scotland. The people who live on the Isle of Man are English but not British, they are Manx. They have their own government and are a crown dependency. The Queen of England is not their Queen, she is the Lord of Man. Settled by the Vikings, it has its own government, Tynwald, which has run continuously since 979. A.D. It has an associate status in the EU, its own currency and its own language (manx Gaelic). The population of sheep outnumbers that of people by 2 to 1. The islands highest point is Snaefell which means snow mountain in Viking language. We rode to the top on a series of two electric trains. The train rides were interesting but very loud. Scenery was beautiful going up the mountain. We passed a huge waterwheel called the Isabela that pumps ... read more
