We had read about a nice Colonial town of Santa Fe de Antioquia, only a short distance from Medellin but at a lower altitude (600m) so we were in for some warmer weather. On depature from the bus (we were the only two to get off) it just looked like another town and I was a bit worried of my choice of option. But it couldn´t have turned out any better. I wandered around in the heat looking for a hostel we had seen a sign for in Medellin. It was here that I discovered the old part of town, cobbled streets, the lovely architecture a nice large town square with a few bars and music coming out of them. I finally found Hostal Sweet Home and had to quickly race back to Deb, who I ... read more

Arriving in Medellin we were having one of those times when you kind of with you had of planned better! When we left Cartagena we weren´t sure what time the bus left for the 13 hour trip to Medellin. We got up early enough and got to the station just after 7am, only to find the next bus wasn´t until 11am and we had just missed the 7am. We don´t really want to be turning up to these cities in the middle of the night (the 1am arrival in Ciudad Bolivar was already testiment) but we had to take what we could. I called up the hostel in Medellin and in my pidgeon Spanish I tried to let them know we were coming late. (I thought I had done quite well). The trip itself wasn´t too ... read more

The outskirts of Cartagena seem much as the other places we have seen on our journey so far, but as you get to historical centre and also can see Bocagrande with its high rise you realise that Cartagena is a different place. The old colonial historical centre is beautiful, guarded by a fort outside the walls, and the walls themselves to keep pirates at bay. The temperature again is very warm, once out the front of the hotel we were thinking of staying at it´s not long before I get "hey Aussie" by a conspicous local. After a hotel little bit more expensive than we would have liked we wanted to check out a couple of others close by, our conspicuous local by the name of Carlos thinks he is our chauffer, he shows us peoples ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta » Taganga August 5th 2009

Not much seemed to change at first glance in Colombia, once in Macao we bought a couple of tickets for Santa Marta, Deb wasn´t feeling well at this stage and it didn´t help when we realised that there was five nice modern buses lined up, we had managed to but tickets for the old disheveled bus. The bus was full of peoples belongings and boxes of goods. We managed to find seats (albeit at a strange angle that wouldn´t change) and on our way. We were stopped a couple of times at military checkpoints (I think the state of our bus may have arose some suspicion). We were even hauled off and the men searched at one stage. Once in Santa Marta after 18 hours in total and Deb not feeling well, we put her to ... read more

What a nightmare journey! After the two hours to Maracay, we then awaited the overnight bus to Merida, all was going well, we had brought more clothes this time to stay warm and at about 6 in the morning we stopped, and didnt move for a good few hours, we saw people outside starting to make their way on foot. We were unsure what was going on, a nice girl tried to explain in Spanish something to us but I wasnt picking up much of what she was saying, one man on the bus was able to speak english. He told us that there was a protest ahead and the road had been blocked since the previous day. After much tooing and froing in Spanish it was explained that the people on the bus had decided ... read more

How things have changed, Venezuela really does have a contrasting landscape, we have now just finished a few days of Caribbean sun and sand and a good idea of how the Venezuelans like to enjoy themselves. Not much different to us in the Western world, just add sun, alcohol and music (although I know I am not speaking for all the western world!). We had another overnight bus, I have come to like the stops we make in the middle of the night, it gives me good opportunity to thaw. We arrived to Maracay on the Friday morning of a holiday, the birthday of Simon Bolivar, and for those of you who know, this Liberator of the Northern part of South America is everywhere, every town has a park and square named after him, schools have ... read more

Back on the road as we left Manaus on an overnight bus to Boa Vista near the border with Venezuela. We were given the gringo seats (the only two that didn´t stay back), the buses are over two levels really big things and relatively new, but unfortunately they like to travel with the interior more suited to polar bears than humans and we spent most of the night trying to stay warm, dodging potholes and trying to stop our seats from returning to vertical. A long 12 hours or so and not much to say of Boa Vista, felt like an outback town in Australia. A good couple of rainstorms gave us relief from the heat and we were up again the next day for a long trip to Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela, unsure how long ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus July 16th 2009

We left Paraty feeling very relaxed and looking forward to heading into the jungle to see a bit of wildlife. We were a bit cautious having heard that Manaus can be a minefield for trying to book tours without being ripped off. I arranged a room through a hotel website, but told them not to bother with a taxi pick up. After 6 hours by bus to Sao Paulo then bus to airport and finally the 4 hour flight to Manaus we were very tired and it was 11pm at night. The first thing to hit us was the humidity, and the surprise at seeing my name on a cardboard placard. I had no doubt we were in for an expensive cab fare. Anyway it turned out alright, only the hotel did not have our booking ... read more
