South America » Ecuador » South » Vilcabamba September 21st 2009

We are staying in Hostal Izchayluma just outside the small town of Vilcabamba (pop only around 5000). The hostal has its dining area overlooking the valley and the town. It is an amazing sight and one we will not forget, there are nice garden areas around the hostal and we have a lovely lodge with the biggest bed we have had yet in South America. The food at the hostal has been delicious and massive portions, along with the view has made for a lovely relaxing stay here. Our first day I went for one of the self guided walks that the hostal provides, it was a brilliant walk. It followed a dirt path through a small community and then it led on to a fabulous ridge walk. On the ridge I was able to see ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca September 17th 2009

Next stop on our trip down the Andes was Cuenca lying in the Southern Highlands, we had decided to skip the train ride 'the devils nose' in Riobamba. The last I had heard was that you were no longer able to ride on the roof, which was the main drawcard. From what I have read on other peoples travelblogs it seems that a couple of Japanese tourists were decapitated a couple of years ago (more recent than my guidebook) and the train has been replaced by a tourist bus on traintracks sort of thing that no longer allows roof riding. It was only 5 hours on the bus from Baños, but it felt like a lifetime. It felt like two lifetimes for Deb as she once again was dying for the toilet on the bus (why ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Baños September 14th 2009

Having a great time here in Baños, Ecuador continues to amaze us. We arrived in Baños with a very different scene before us. As we headed east after heading south through the Andes we began to see the landscape change, it went from dusty and dry to green and tropical as the altitude dropped down to 1800m and continues to drop further if you pass Baños before arriving at the Amazon. The number of Eucalyptus trees and pine trees we have seen is crazy. I think the Eucalypts were introduced 150 years ago or so, but they have really taken hold and the scene outside the bus window often reminded me of being back home in Australia. I even noticed a few bottle-brush trees in the streets of Quito now that remember it. We are really ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Cotopaxi September 9th 2009

We have been having a wonderful time here a Secret Garden Cotopaxi, we had seen a leaflet about this place at another hostel and the setting looked great, and we haven´t been disappointed. We have decided to go over the budget a little here but has all been well worth it. Heading south from Quito to the hostel again we had a clear day and could see the brilliant volanoes. The hostel is set just outside the National Park Cotopaxi in the quiet countryside and set with the most amazing view of Cotopaxi which has you just mesmorised. We have spent three days here and really enjoyed and savoured, the food has been brilliant. Set at 3500m it wasn´t as cold as we had been expecting, our room was nice and the fire kept it warm ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito September 6th 2009

We are glad Ecuador is a small country, we really are enjoying the short bus trips, only two ours to Quito from Otavalo was nice. Set at 2800m Quito is similarly set to a lot of the Andean cities, long and narrow. With large mountain peaks forming a channel. We stayed at Chicago hostal which had a nice terrace that looked over the old town, only with a couple of ugly tall old buildings blocking some of the view. Our first day we took a stroll to the new town, to the Marsical Sucre area. It is very traveller orientated, there are plenty of bars, internet cafes and tour agencies (Galapagos tours the most popular, and expensive) The most we have come across on our trip. Being in the city we thought we´d try a couple ... read more

Border formalities done and another spectacular Andean road took us through to our first port of call in Ecuador, Otavalo (2500m). We had a lovely colonial hotel (even cable TV for a bit of premiership football), and the town itself is of medium size, and set brilliantly with massive Volcan Imbabura (4621m) behind the town and separating it from the town of Imbarra. The Friday we arrived we were wrecked and decided just to have something to eat and get to bed, we did encounter a street parade of the finalists for the Queen of the Yamor festival which was starting the next week. The town itself is full of indigenous in their brilliant and bright clothing and velvet hats. Many of the women have babies tied to their backs by a blanket. The best ones ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cali August 28th 2009

Passing field after field of Sugar Cane as we came back towards sea level I knew we were going to enjoy the warmth of the sun in Cali. After our arrival we quickly took a wander around town, a nice leafy plaza and it definitely has a much more laid back feel than Medellin and Bogota and with less high rise. We had a lovely cheap almuerzo (set lunch) including a lovely soup called Sonchope, it had potatoes in it and it really was great to dig in to some lovely potatoes. The weather was so nice, not to hot but just a lovely warmth from the sun. Our hostal was set up against the hill in the nice part of town, there was some cool cafes around and also a strip of bars, but unfortunately ... read more

South America » Colombia » Quindío » Salento August 23rd 2009

Our journey in to the coffee region was a long one, but well worth the trip. We were on the overnight from Bogota, this time we had a blanket that Deb had bought to keep us warm and it definitely did the job. The bus went over a mountain range of the Andes so it was very much a slow paced bus. Up an then down, and the rising sun on the way down also brought the towns of the coffee region below in to view, in Armenia we caught the colectivo bus to Salento. Salento is a much smaller town than the other coffee towns of Armenia and Manizales so we decided on Salento. It is a nice attractive town, very small but set in lush green and there is a lookout at the top ... read more

South America » Colombia » Villa de Leyva August 20th 2009

At the bus station in Bogota I asked a lady which terminal for Tunja (two hours away), and we were in luck. From some of her Spanish and her body language I gathered that she was going there also. This saved us the usual hassle of wandering around being yelled at by men saying the names of every town in Colombia as quickly as they can! We squashed in the the colectivo, the journey was surprising as the scenery was very green, rolling hills and plenty of cows around. Reminded me a bit of Ireland. We changed at Tunja for the downhill journey to Villa de Leyva our destination, another colonial town. With a much drier and pleasant climate and is a favourite haunt of Bogotanos for the weekend. The bus to Villa de Leyva was ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota August 17th 2009

Bogota is one big city! Set strangely at 2600m it was much colder than we had expected. Our hostel was a bit of an ice-box which meant most free time was spent in the bed trying to stay warm! Our two days in Bogota were very relaxed, being a Sunday and then a holiday on the Monday we probably didn´t see it at full speed. We stayed in the historic area of La Candaleria and went for a bit of a walk, looking at all the shops, plenty of fast food (rapido comida), took in a view from a very tall building. On one side mountains and the other 180 degrees was buildings as far as the eye could see! There were plenty of street performers and a crazy Guinea pig game in the square. Plaza ... read more
