Wednesday 13th October: Hi guys. Sorry for the delay in updating. I know that you are all hanging on every last word!! After our last entry from the Great Barrier Reef, we hopped in Bertha for the last time and took a leisurely drive back along the coast. We stopped briefly at Trinity Beach, which looks gorgeous, before heading on to Cairns. We sadly dropped off faithful old Bertha who had been home for the last 8 days, booked into our hotel and went exploring. Cairns is beautiful, with a free outdoor infinity pool/lagoon on the Esplanade, looking right out to sea. We went out for surf and turf (yum - even better because it wasn't pot noodle prepared in the back of a camper van) and met a lovely waitress from Ormskirk (Kay) who gave ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Port Douglas October 12th 2010

Sunday 10th October - Final leg of the almighty drive to Port Douglas today. After 3000km of pootling, we were stopped for speeding and fined 130AUD. It wouldn't be a trip away if we weren't stopped for a motoring misdemeanour. Have to admit though, that he was a very nice cop and could have charged us 3 times that amount. Even so, it'll be an extra night in Bertha rather than a night in a luxury spa now that we've been fined. With all the stress of the criminal activity, I forgot that I needed a toilet stop, so we decided to make an emergency stop at the next available place. As if by magic there appeared a signpost indicating that visitors are welcome to stop for a coffee at the next right turn. Expecting a ... read more

Tuesday 5th October - Saturday 9th The last time we left you we were just killing time before heading off on the next leg of our journey, over to the Queensland coast. We spent the day pretty much doing the internet, laundry, coffee thing whilst soaking up some sun on the Darwin waterfront....it's a tough life. On our last evening in Darwin we met up with our friend Tina again and organised some Thai take out so we could chill out at her place. No air con so not very chillin.....still 35 degrees and 90% humidity! Managed to organise a blind date for Tina whilst collecting the meal....what a friendly place. Mixed feelings about leaving Darwin. Love the laid back vibe but not sure if we can handle the heat and humidity anymore. Hope to come ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin » City of Darwin October 5th 2010

Monday 4th October Well, after the last blog entry, I wanted to be a bit more upbeat, but we've not had the best of starts today. First port of call was the Darwin Dam (Darwin Damn, more like, as there were barricades preventing any viewings). Never mind, we thought, we'll head to Berry Springs for a swim. It looked absolutely stunning, but was closed for the day (we think they may have found a big croc in the water). Life in the outback seems to be trying to tell us something, so we decided to head back into Darwin itself a day early. En-route we saw quite a major bush fire (luckily it didn't originate from 2 English tourists cooking pot noodles). It feels really good to be back in a city and we went to ... read more

Sunday 3rd October - Kakadoo. Well, the much anticipated Kakadoo was a major disappointment after Litchfield and Katherine National Parks. Granted it is the dry season so the waterfalls, wetlands and rivers are not at their best, but in our opinion it is majorly overrated. We first visited an Aboriginal Rock Art site at Nourlangie. I tried to convince Dave of the cultural and historical significance of the paintings, but he's adamant that a couple of infantile crayon doodles do not a Rock Art site make. Indeed, Elle's artwork should solicit far more oohs and aahs than this rubbish (It did provide the comic opportunity for me to call them Kakadoo-dles, though). Next stop was the Mamukala wetlands and Bird Hide. Bill Oddie would probably be impressed as there were thousands of egrets, pygmy geese, herons, etc. ... read more

Friday 1st October - Katherine Long drive today from Litchfield to Katherine via Pine Creek. Encountered loads of road trains (Dave's heard that in some parts of the country they get up to quarter of a mile long). You would think by now we'd had enough of waterfalls, but a quick detour to Edith Falls proves that you can never have too many waterfalls in this region. Bearing in mind my usual level of physical activity, I thought it was very spirited of us to attempt to swim across the whole lake. Indeed, I thought we were doing an excellent job until we were overtaken by 83 year old George and his 2 young grandchildren who do this twice a day. Ok - so we don't want to have waterfall overkill here, so next stop is ... read more

Tuesday 28th September (cont)... Later that same day, fuelled with a bit of dutch courage and convinced that we'd been imbued with some local knowledge through the consumption of a Kangaroo, Crocodile and Barramundi mixed grill, we decided to enter a local pub quiz. Most of our answers consisted of a stock phrase " take pity on us we're Poms". This earnt us absolutely no sympathy and suffice to say we ranked towards the lower end of the scoring spectrum. Wednesday 29th September Got up early to pick up our campervan and start our journey into the wilderness. First stop Adelaide River Township where we parked up and took a trek to Robin Falls. (Hadn't seen a vehicle for hours, until Han got changed in the back of the camper and as if by magic, the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin September 28th 2010

Saturday 25th September 2010: G’day Sheilas and Bruces. Arrived in Darwin at 2:35am and got up after 6 hours sleep to go straight for a dip in the pool. That’s the life. It’s the build up season here so it was 33 degrees with up to 90 percent humidity. Ie we’re a bit hot and sweaty which in my book merits a good few cold tinnies. First stop Shananigans pub (fondly known as Shags by the locals). Well, it was the AFL final which is one of the biggest sporting events in Australia(for those of you don’t know the sport, there’s a funny shaped ball and a load of blokes with too much testosterone). The result was an almost unprecedented draw which resulted in local supporters crying (apparently it’s even worse than NBC FC losing 7-0). ... read more
