Hey Everyone! It's been a little while since we had decent internet, so I've backdated the posts to match the days we were at those places. (today it's September 29th here) On our last night in Siem Reap we went to Pub street with a few of the people from our group and our guide. We went to Temple Club, and she knew almost everyone there. They have a promotion where you get a free t-shirt for each pitcher of drinks you buy... I think we left with about 7 t-shirts between the 5 of us, but we had loads of fun. I danced up a storm with girls from all over the world, and Trev maintained control of the pool table all night. The morning of the 25th we boarded a public bus for Kompong ... read more

Where to begin... We arrived in Siem Reap 2 days ago and had a free afternoon to explore. We looked around the market a bit and bought some cool cotton pants to wear to the temples. We also signed up for a Khmer cooking class. It ended up being just the two of us, but it was a lot of fun. I made fresh spring rolls, chicken curry and pumpkin custard. Trev made green mango salad, fish amok (a Cambodian specialty) and banana dessert. During prep Trev had a little accident with the knife... it wasn't too bad, and I think the girls teaching us were more worried than him. Some iodine and a waterproof bandaid and everything was all better. After our cooking class we met up with our group and went to a restaurant ... read more

Tonight is our second night in Battambang (pronounced bat-am-bong). It's a small town fairly and doesn't see too many tourists. We took the public bus here yesterday. It was about a 6 hour ride from Phnom Phen. The ride was okay...and we got to watch super cheesy Chinese Kung-Fu movies dubbed over in Khmer. After we arrived and checked-in we set out for lunch. We went to a local restaurant; the food and fruit shakes were so good. Back at our hotel we were picked up by moto-taxi drivers and we set off for a countryside tour. First we stopped in a small village where they make rice paper wrappers. After that we headed to a village where they make fish paste. Yeah, it smells as good as it sounds... The fermented fish is ground up ... read more

We started our afternoon tour with a visit to the Genocide Museum (S-21). We had a local guide that was very knowledgeable. The prison had been a school, but was taken over during the Pol Pot regime. During nearly 4 years of the regime 20 000 people were tortured there. It was a very sad place to be. Some of the buildings have been left as they were at the end of the Regime, with the evidence of the horrors so apparent. There was another building with photos of many of the victims as they were brought into the prison. It was hard to look into their eyes. After we went just outside of the city to the Choeng Ek Killing Fields. This was the place where all the people from S-21 were taken to be ... read more

We arrived in Phnom Penh two nights ago. It's rainy season here, so guess what??? We were welcomed with a crazy tropical storm with lots of lightning and rain. Some of the streets were even flooded, but that doesn't stop the insane traffic. There doesn't seem to be any real lanes that people follow and there is a system of flashing your headlights and honking your horn that seems to work somehow. And when you cross the street it's like taking your life into your hands! Take a deep breath and step into the flow of traffic and somehow all the scooters, tuk-tuks and cars will miss you! Yesterday we saw the majority of major sights in the city. We went to Wat Phnom (the temple on the hill that the town is named for), the ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Lantau Island September 17th 2010

We landed in Hong Kong at about 6am. We stashed our bags at the airport then headed out. First we took the subway into town. It was easy to figure out. It also happened to be rush hour, so that was an experience too. We stopped at a few stations and went up to street level to look around. We didn't have any maps, or any idea what we could go look at, so we didn't see anything in particular. The skyline in HK is amazing and the harbor view was great too. After our subway adventure we took the train back to Lantau island. We took a bus up the hill to see Po Lin monastery and Big Buddha. The bus turned out to be more of an adventure than we had imagined! The road ... read more

So we are just waiting in the Vancouver airport. 6 hour layover is pretty boring, we both thought the airport would have more to see and do, but we did find some comfy chairs to rest in. We catch our flight at 2am Vancouver time to go to hong kong and then a 10 hour layover where we go outside and exploring then another 5 hour flight and finally Cambodia. Unfortunetly the beers and appitizers we had at milestones is putting us to sleep but we need to stay awake until we get on the plane at least. I set an alarm just in case, well next update will probably be another iPhone update so no pictures again and will be after we went around hong kong so hopefully more exciting. Trev (Court is sleeping)... read more

Our countdown is getting nice and small...only 3 more sleeps! Yesterday I wrote my CASLPA exam (whew! glad that's over!), so now it feels like we're getting really close. AND, I don't have to study anymore so I can finish my packing. Trevor finished packing yesterday and his backpack is pretty empty. This is good for me, because I am guaranteed to fill it up with stuff once we're there. I'm sure packing will be slightly more challenging for me...I generally pack too much stuff (big surprise?) My brain just can't comprehend how I will survive 6 weeks with 5 shirts, other than buying more there. Yay shopping :) That's about it for now. I'll just need to keep myself busy until Wednesday night. Probably cleaning the house and baking... I'll need some volunteers to accept ... read more
