Total cycled on this adventure = 1962.4 miles.. That's right everyone - We're home. We know it will be a massive shock to you all as it's happened so suddenly and we hadn't given any indication that this is what we'd planned as we hadn't really planned it.. There's a few reasons why we couldn't carry on. The main one is that we couldn't cycle on Highway 1 (the only road through Baja) any longer. Having looked at the route ahead, spoken to locals and researched the internet and books we knew the road wouldn't get any better, if anything, it gets worse with all of the construction going on (see photos). Our ride from Ensenada to San Vincente was horrendous. It's hard to explain how frightening it is when two 18 wheel juggernauts pass you ... read more

Hola from Mexico (that's 'hello from Mexico' for those of you that don't speak Spanish).. Just as I was becoming comfortable outside of my comfort zone we head into Baja..... Setting off from San Diego after 3 days of rest, sending stuff home, buying maps on Mexico and stocking up on toiletries we were ready to go. It's great cycling into a big city but it's even better cycling out of one. We were quite anxious about the ride ahead of us having heard so many bad, really bad, reports about the killings, kidnapping and robberies happening in the area where we were headed. We decided to avoid Tijuana where alot of the news reports focus and instead head inland, over the mountains, to a town called 'Tecate". David's now group leader and I'm second in ... read more

Here we are on the south side of L.A. sitting in a hotel in the surfers paradise of Huntington Beach. The last few days of cycling have been fantastic. From Santa Barbara - Malibu was a great ride and this mornings ride was what we've been waiting for since we started. Bright blue skies, sun shining, cycling along the boardwalks of Malibu, Venice, Hermosa and Redondo Beaches.. Fantastic.. It was typically stereo typical! Rollerbladers, joggers, skaters, fitness instructors, big boobs, big hair, big lips!! We stayed in a fantastic campsite last night (Thursday 7th) on a hillside overlooking L.A. and the Pacific Ocean. We woke up at 6am and started the routine of getting packed up of which I'll discuss later. We wanted to make an early start as we'd been warned about the rush hour ... read more

Tuesday 28th September - San Fran - Pigeon Point = 61 miles Although we had a fantastic time in San Francisco we were ready to carry on with our journey. David got his hub fixed on Monday and we were ready to roll.. Having decided to pass on the $22 per head breakfast at the hotel we went over the road to "Daniels". We had a bagel each, coffee, juice and fruit for $12. We have to start watching the pennies at some point. Before we left England we'd set our budget at $80 per day. All I'll say is that we'll be lucky to reach L.A at this rate! Cycling out of SF was quite relaxed. We went through Golden Gate Park and headed to the ocean. The biggest difference we noticed was the size ... read more

Sunday 26th September 2010. San Francisco, San Francisco, so cool we named it twice..... What a city. We're loving our time here. The weather's been hot and sunny which always helps and our hotel room is fantastic. We didn't have anything booked when we arrived in the city on Friday afternoon so once we'd cycled over the Golden Gate Bridge we found a cafe off the beaten track and checked out hotels on the net. I'd already done some research a few days earlier in Gualala and had my eye on a few hotels. When I checked the prices on Friday my prefered choice was offering 20% off for a 3 or 4 night stay. It was too good to miss so we booked it online. By sheer coincidence we were only about 1.5 miles away ... read more

Monday 20th September. After a review of our last few weeks and some good advice we've decided to slow the pace down. Infact we've slowed it down that much that we've stopped. We're having a couple of days off in Gualala, a lovely village on the Pacific Coast 120 miles north of San Francisco. We're staying at the "Seacliff on the Bluff" hotel which has stunning views overlooking the Pacific, a spa bath, giant sized bed (with white sheets), champagne in the fridge and a fire in the bedroom... Bliss... I don't want to leave. Roll back one week... I was devestated when David told me the hub on his bike needed fixed and that, after contacting Rohloff the manufacturer, the only way of doing this was by being in San Fransisco week commencing 27th September. ... read more

Thursday 16th September - Eureka - Humbolt County Border = 90 miles. Our longest ride ever. We couldn't quite make 100 miles, infact we couldn't make another 100 yards. Wow. The Avenue of the Giants is amazing. The photos don't do it justice. We cycled over 30 miles through Redwoods and Sequioa trees and even though we were on the edge of the freeway we could have been in a Jurassic land. The best way to appreciate them is to take your time and cycle through. It took over 3 hours and was the best riding so far. The past two days have been the best cycling of the trip. We cycled through Eureka which had some really nice Victorian buildings. Then it was 30 miles of freeway cycling, 30 miles Avenue of Giants and then ... read more

Brookings - Orick = 75 miles. Todays ride (Tuesday 14th September 2010) took us from the Oregon/Californian border through the Redwoods to a town called Orick. The ride over the Crescent City Hills was scary. One lane, logging trucks and r.v's don't mix well. One r.v. narrowly missed me. I heard screaching of brakes coming up behind me and I gritted my teeth! David got a flatty on the worst stretch of road. A piece of stanley blade was embedded in his tyre. What else could go wrong? Once again the best part of the ride was the last 10 miles. The Redwoods really are amazing. HUGE! We also passed a group of elk grazing in a field on the side of the road. Group of elk? Herd of elk? Squad of elk? One for the ... read more

Day One - Day Four We arrived in Seattle on Saturday 28th August at 11.30am Seattle time. Unfortunately our bikes didn't arrive until 5.30pm. We stayed in a motel as we didn't have time to put the bikes together and cycle to the campsite before it got dark. Sunday 29th August we arrived at Dash Point Campsite 25 miles from Seattle (15 miles from the airport). Monday 30th August we sorted our gear and walked around the campsite which is set in acres of forest. Tuesday 31st August we visited Seattle. What a fantastic place. Even though it was heavy rain and freezing we could appreciate how cool this city was. Rest days over it was time to make a move and by Wednesday 1st September 2010 we were ready to set off. Day Five Seattle ... read more
