Okay... Yep I am still alive and in the good ole US of A. Seattle to be exact... at least for the next few hours. Let me see. Last entry was from the shed I believe and that seems like a lifetime ago. I left Tauranga for Wellington on the 13th of Jan. Well at least I tried to leave. I boarded this propeller driven Air New Zealand plane which seemed fine. We took off and about 20 minutes into the flight the stewardess came to my seat and asked if she could look out of the window. I assured her that clouds are quite common at 20,000 feet at which she mocked admirably. When she left I glanced at the hydrolic fluid seeping from the engine cowling and chuckled admirably to myself. Then shit it. ... read more
How are you all? Well, I shall spend my first Christmas away from the UK and it feels a bit strange. As summer is kicking in here in New Zealand it seems odd that the sun goes down at 9pm at Christmas time - how can kids be in bed for Santa when it's still sunny? I will begin the travel part back in Sydney. Hmmm... My last entry slated Sydney but to some extent I think that coming from Manilla direct to there was perhaps too much of a contrast. Sure it has wonderful weather and the the landmarks we have come to recognise - the opera house and harbour bridge are worth a look, it just felt a bit like the UK, only with more convicts. In fairness I did quite like it ... read more
Ok here we go... Normally I spend ages before writing this blog to try to think of something witty or poignant to say before launching into a barrage of nonsense so that is my excuse for not writing more often. Well that and being lazy and finding a wifi hotspot lasts long enough before timing out (yes you starbucks and Mc Donalds!) I remember what seems like months ago now writing the last entry in a swish hotel in Singapore and wondering what the Philippines would be like as it was really the only place I am visiting that I had no preconceptions of. The flight was one of the shortest I have had so far at a little over 3 hours and seemed to take much less than that. The usual land sea land view ... read more
Okay... I'm still alive! I have been trying to write an update every few days but something always seems to crop up What a whirlwind time that has been. .. Quite literally. The day after the last blog Tokyo was hit by a typhoon which was interesting to say the least - I can never work out the difference between a typhoon, hurricane or just a big storm but this one was a typhoon. Typhoon 18 to be exact - no names for them in Japan. I sat in the lobby of the hotel all night actually, doing some email and watching as the water level rose and came over the pavement. Even the Japanese guys at the hotel were a little suprised at the scale of it, so they went to bed. Chatted with a ... read more
Grab a cup of tea - this might be a long one! Week 2 in Japan and a move to a new (and cheaper hotel) in a place called Minamisenju. The room is shall we say "compact" but to be honest it is pretty cool too, so the bed I complained about last week has been replaced by 3 matteresses (3-tatami-mat) and the world's smallest bathroom is now completely gone. Actually it has been replaced by a traditional Japanese communal bath which is certainly different! Last weekend started with a gig at a small venue in Ueno where I met up with Kengo and the ever enthusistic Hiroho who has been a keen promoter of all things BabyBoom. . The gig was a strange mish mash of bands from different genres and met the band "Lost ... read more
So I arrived today and day 1 of my journey. It was a long long flight so endured a numb bum for 12 hours! Tokyo is my first stop and will be here in Japan for about a month. Met up with Kengo who looks after BabyBoom Japan who sorted my hotel, a phone (cause mine doesn't work here +818091892273 if anyone needs to catch up with me) and took me for my first Japanese eating experience- from a vending machine no less and Hiroho a friend of the label. So we went this evening to a gig with 5 bands playing. In typical surreal fashion I leave Manchester and the first live music I see the band played Oasis covers! Met some really nice people already and that took away the doubt that I am ... read more
Well it's just 2 weeks to go and so much to sort out. jabs, visas, a good backpack and insurance would be start I guess. Heading to Tokyo first to hook up with Kengo who runs BabyBoom Japan for us - see some of the artists we have been working with there. Over to Osaka to catch up with Massa (a fanatic Man City fan) who will want all the gossip on all things Manchester. After 6 weeks with really good friends in the tranquility of Ardeche in France I imagine Tokyo will be somewhat of a change of pace! I will be updating here on a regular basis and also record label news at www.myspace.com/babyboomrecordsuk. Well... time to prepare. Chris ... read more
