The tally so far... hostels/hotels: 18 we´ve changed beds 24 times plane rides: 3 long haul bus trips: 9 Arrived in Cusco after yet another long night bus trip and checked into Pariwana Hostel. We were there way before check-in time so we stashed our bags in storage and went out to walk the city. As we walked outside we noticed that there were 11 different locks on the massive double doors to the hostel.. high security! We had arrived on Easter Sunday so there was a big shebang on at the Plaza de Armas. We got prime seats at a cafe overlooking the plaza and cathedral and watched the spectacle over a shit cup of coffee. They had big religious processions and a show of force from the army. Rows of little men in G.I. ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon March 29th 2010

We rocked into Arequipa at about midnight woke up the hostel staff and slumped into bed exhausted. We awoke the next morning with a beautiful day ahead of us and a new city to explore. We came to the garden of the hostel for breakfast and were greeted with the city´s two formidable guardians. The peaks of El Misti and Pichu Pichu rose up in our view, with their snow caps to remind us that we definitely were still in the Andes. We had little expectations of Arequipa, our visit was solely based upon trekking the Colca canyon. We headed into the urban fold of Peru´s second largest city with an open mind and a fresh palate. We ventured towards the Plaza de Armas and felt as though we´d stepped into the plaza of a fancy ... read more

So we finally headed out of our temporary home at Adventure Brew hostel. Walking up the hill to the bus station with our backpacks wasn´t much fun. The bus was much smaller than what we were used to, so we were rather cramped in. The ride was only 3 hours though so we weren´t too worried. We slept a bit of the way and missed the lovely scenery. The bus stopped in a tiny place called Taquina. Everybody got off and we weren´t sure what was going on so we just followed.. we´ve learnt that is the best thing to do when somebody is babbling spanish and you don´t understand a single word.. follow the crowd! Turned out we had to pay 1 boliviano to board a little boat to cross to the tiny port on ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz March 11th 2010

The bus to La Paz was a little less eventful. Actually it was brilliant, seats that reclined right back, all the leg room in the world, oh and sealed roads which was a nice change. We were so tired we slept through most of the trip to La Paz, which was disappointing because what we saw of the trip was amazing. Winding through the Andes is quite breath taking. However we were awake for our entrance to La Paz. Driving over the top of the rise of El Alto and looking down into the bowl of La Paz was awesome, check the photo´s. Quite an introduction to our favourite city so far. Finally finishing our grueling bus journey, we venture downhill to our hostel, The Adventure Brew (recommended by the guys we met at our hostel ... read more

The tally so far... hostels/hotels: 9 plane rides: 3 long haul bus trips: 6 long haul train rides: 1 dorm rooms shared with chronic snorers: 1 injuries: 1 rainy days: 3 weather under 30 degrees: 2 days So the Bolivian border was crowded and hot. We couldn't figure out which office to go to for our Brazilian exit stamp. Luckily we seem to meet exactly the right people to help us wherever we go, so we found some english speakers and figured it out. We knew the right words in Spanish but of course whatever question we asked they said 'si, si'... so we couldn't be sure if they were bullshitting or not. Luckily we only had to walk 100m to get to the Bolivian border. Getting through there was a breeze. Caught a taxi from ... read more

The tally so far... hostels/hotels: 6 ... with hot showers: 2/6 plane rides: 3 long haul bus trips: 4 long haul train rides: 1 dorm rooms shared with chronic snorers: 1 injuries: 1 rainy days: 0 weather under 30 degrees: 2 days We really enjoyed Puerto Iguacu, but time is short and we must fast track back through Brazil and across to Bolivia since Brazil is totally blowing our budget. But first its back across the border. It was easy enough to get on the bus to get to the ´frontera´, but getting through is a total pain. The bus from the Argentinian side waited for us at the Argentinian border which was nice. But then he dumped us off at the Brazilian border and left so we had to get our entry stamp and then ... read more

Goodbye Curitiba, hellllloooooooo Argentina. Overnight bus again, i slept through the whole night fine but Coley still struggles with the fact that brazillian bus drivers always seem to be in a race to get there first. However we arrived in Foz do Iguaçu bang on time. 4 hours later we covered the 15 kilometers it was to Puerto Iguazu Argentina. Because we arrived on sunday the buses went once each hour as opposed to once every 20 minutes. Dropped off to leave brazil, wait for next bus to take us 3 kilometers to enter Argentina then had to wait again for another bus. We of course could have left sooner but being tight fisted as i am i refused to pay 10 pesos (approx AUD$3) when i had already paid for the bus. Besides that security ... read more

The tally so far... hostels with hot showers: 0/3 plane rides: 3 long haul bus trips: 1 injuries: 1 So on our last day in Rio we donned our evil backpacks and headed down to the bus stop in the 36 degree heat. We were heading to the bus station a few hours early since only Brazilian citizens can book bus tickets online. According to our Lonely Planet, a bus ticket would cost about 32USD, but once we got to the station we found that only 2 bus companies went to Curitiba and they both charged the same price of R$104 (AUD64).. another hit to the budget. But the bus turned out to be really nice. We got free food and water, pillow and blanket and the seats almost lay all the way flat. Somehow we ... read more

Saturday the 20th of feb we say not goodbye but a big catchya later to Santiago. We are off to Rio de Janiero! Woo Hoo. First thing realise on our way over on the plane is that we now have to start learning portuguese. Dammit i was just starting to get the hang of spanish. We breezed through the airport and got a bus to Botofogo beach where we stayed. The bus ride told us a lot about this exotic city of which we had previously only seen glamorous footage of. The motorway in showed favela upon favela lining the road. I wasn´t expecting poverty like this. As we drove through the city, that poverty was hidden behind the sun, beach and mountains that is Rio. Definately 2 sides to the city. The next morning we ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region February 17th 2010

So the plane flight was totally crap. 11.5 hours of average food and uncomfortable seats. Dinner food was great, breakfast food was shite. We tried to sleep but it just didn´t happen. Leaving Auckland at 4.40pm on Wednesday and arriving in Santiago at midday on the same day and having no sleep can make a person damn tired. We were wrecked by the time we landed in Santiago. The landing was great though, the view from the plane was amazing. The land is so flat and barren, then there will be a massive mountain popping up out of nowhere. In between the barren areas and mountains there are massive crop plantations, all set out in huge circles (have a look at the photos). Got held up at the airport because we didn´t see the sign pointing ... read more
