Well guys. Bad news: still no computer. It is so sad! I want all my picture off of it soooo bad! I am scared of losing them forever. Anyway, the last few weeks have been busy. School is starting to pick up and I don't like it one bit. I had a HUGE paper that I just finished. It is due in the morning. It was about the counterculture movement in th 60's in America and if the rock music of that era was political. Pretty interesting...except not. And I have another paper due Wednesday for my English class. Luckily, it is about a very good book called Venture to the Interior. I would definitely recommend this book...talks about South Africa after WW2 and compares European/African life...even uses some Afrikaans words! Very good book, I like ... read more

So.....good news! (NOT) My computer has officially breathed its last breath. Not sure what I'm gonna do about it. Still kind of hoping I can bring it back to life but it's been 2 days and it just can't recover. The battery was really bad (3rd one I've got from Gateway) and it wouldn't turn on a few days ago but after a while I got it back on. So then I decided to leave it on and plugged in and never turn it off cuz I knew it wouldn't come back. Then the other day it just BOOM, turned black and went out and it wont turn back on. I pretty much knew this was going to happen but it usually always pulls through some how, if I'm really nice to it. I have been ... read more

Nothing too exciting today. Just a few random stories. I just got back from the grocery store. I had class @ 9 and then I got together with a girl from Ireland to work on our project for tomorrow morning. Tuesday mornings we work in a classroom together at Kayamandi. I think I already talked about how crazy/hectic this experience is. Tomorrow will be our 2 day and our task given by the teacher was to make labels of the body parts to stick on a drawing of the body. This is a bit complicated because the kids don't know English and I don't think they can read. We found out the names in Xhosa and then wrote the English word next to it. While printing all the words and cutting it up I couldn't help ... read more

Wow, it has been too long since I wrote, I'm not sure what to say! Classes first I guess. I finally got a schedule and everything figured out which is quite a relief. I am taking a history of the last 6 billion years course. An a history of the western world in the 20th century. An English course called Travel and Translation:Writing Africa. And a Beginning Afrikaans course. Unfortunately I have at least 2 classes every day of the week. Some of the Americans here have like 2 days off a week, I'm not sure how that works out? Tuesdays are real long- yesterday was rough. From 8-1 we had Kayamandi. After learning about what we would be doing there and stuff we went around 9 to the township and I met the teacher I ... read more

So today was my first day of classes! I had a history class at 9 this morning. I was so tired because I went to bed at like 2 in the morning again. I NEED MORE SLEEP! haha...My class was interesting. It was only like 10 mins long and the professor was super young. It was definitely in Afrikaans....it switched though, like half the sentence would be in English then it would go to Afrikaans. A super nice girl sat next to me from Zimbabwe and she took my number and was like Oh my gosh you're from America...call me if you have any questions! She was really helpful! She goes, " so does it sound like we have accents to you?" I was like oh my gosh yes! Like hardcore. And she laughed and thought ... read more

Okay...I am quickly going to recollect the last 24 hours in my mind and try to explain them. 1st of all- amazing, and SO MUCH FUN! I feel guilty for having this much fun :) I feel like if I talk about, it will go away....but I have to share! This whole last week has been almost surreal, like, is this real? Classes start on Monday and I am sure all of these things will banish and be replaced with new responsibilities but I will just soak everything up in the meantime. Okay, so yesterday we were having a Bad Taste Party for my friend Nico, from Germany. 4 of us girls went down town looking for some ugly, cheap, clothes so we could look cool at the party. haha... so we end up in this ... read more

So I know this is sad, but I am so excited to finally have internet! This morning I rolled out of bed, literally, and walked my computer back to the internet place (2 time) and they fixed it! So I can finally put up pictures and email without paying for it. The last week has been crazy, it is all starting to blur together now. The last 2 days were 2 major events for Jool for the school. It is SO WEIRD....so basically everyone runs around with their housing group (kinda like frats or sororities) and sings and dances and has competitions. Thursday were the trolly races. Trollies being grocery carts. They set up this huge course, block off the roads, and THOUSANDS of people are there dressed in matching clothes with their group and cheering ... read more

Hey...I was excited to get some phone calls from home! Even though they always wake me up :) I got about 5 hours of sleep last night, went to bed about 2:30 and got a phone call from Destiny & Dave & Dan about 7ish. Then I went to a presbyterian church in town. It was a very good sermon, but very traditional and hymn-like! haha...if I had gotten more sleep it would have been easier to stay awake. Yesterday we got on some huge buses and toured a lot of the southern cape. We were just driving along looking at the slums for miles and miles on my right side and then I turned and looked out the other window and saw the BLUEST, most amazing ocean ever! With beautiful beaches....luckily, our driver told us ... read more

Hey everyone! So I will not have free internet access until next Thursday(ish) so I still cannot put up any pictures. I haven't actually taken too many because I am scared to use my nice new camera because everyone keeps saying not to bring too many belongings with you when you are out. You may get robbed! And since we walk everywhere....ya, I will be taking some soon though. I hope pictures can give everyone a clear picture of this place but it just wont be the same. It is like nothing I have every seen! Feels like Palm Springs, CA but 10X better scenery. Everyone here looks like they should be stars in Hollywood...like Laguna Beach! It is quite crazy and different then you would think. The last 2 days I have been in orientations ... read more

Well I made it to Stellenbosch finally! We landed in Cape Town this morning as the sun was rising. It was UNBELIEVABLE! Huge mountains, the ocean, the sunrise, and green land everywhere! It was so beautiful! It was a 12 hour flight...I slept for a little while and watched quite a few movies. The most repulsive and perverted French man ever, sat in front of me and wouldn't leave us alone. Disgusting! So we made it to the campus later this morning and awkwardly picked roommates and got our rooms. Then we had some orientations and lunch. I finally got to shower later this evening and that resulted in my entire bathroom floor turning into a lake. I have no way to clean it because I only have one shower towel for my body...? We could ... read more
