After 10 days in Sunny Southern California and a few days back in Washington, I flew to the East Coast yesterday! I've been pretty excited about this trip because I get to see many great friends that I haven't seen for SO long and probably won't see again for quite some time! Monday morning I left home at 3:30AM for SEA-TAC. My mom was the only willing volunteer for that airport shift. ha ha. I had a flight to Denver and then on to Boston. Both flights were full and I had middle seats so they were long and tiring. Getting 3 hours of sleep the night before was a big part of the problem. I feel like flying to Korea is faster than the East Coast! I think I just expected that because it's America ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Cheongju March 16th 2011

Things are coming to a close here in Korea. It's officially been ONE year since Jake and I landed in Seoul. It's funny to think about how nervous we were about teaching and training, and living in Korea. Five of our friends have left in the past 3 weeks! It's terrible and crazy that everyone's leaving at the same time! But we all came in together too and that was fun. We've gotten a couple new teachers as well, and that's been fun getting to know some new faces. After I leave every teacher at CDI will be male. The girl students aren't too excited about it. It's quite strange thinking about leaving here. It's definitely a mix of emotions. I've decided every traveling experience turns out to be the same. You get excited to leave ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Cheongju February 24th 2011

Somehow it's almost March, 2011. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one. Over here in Korea we've been hoping and waiting for things to slow down. I'm realizing now that they're not going to and I need to get my stuff together! I officially have 4 weeks left on my contract. I'm still trying to process that as well. January intensives finished and we thought things would slow down but for the last 3 weeks we've been saying bye to people heading back home and preparing to welcome new teachers. This is definitely some kind of record: Jake and I haven't left Cheongju since Lacey was here visiting at Christmas!! YIKES!!! It's been nice for our wallets and we've gotten plenty of rest but as the weather gets nicer, I'm itching to get ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don January 8th 2011

Sunday morning we were picked up from our deserted hotel and driven to Ao Nang. We had reserved a speed boat trip for the day to see 4 different southern islands that we wouldn't have been able to see on our own, with the little amount of time that we had. We went to Bamboo Island, Maya Bay, Viking Cave, and Koh Phi Phi. We had quite an interesting group of people on our speedboat, including males, females, and a couple who were in between. Our tour guide was a friendly, funny, young Thai guy. A number of different languages were being spoken all day. Needless to say it was an entertaining day! We departed from Ao Nang to Railay to pick up some of the other tourists. The first sight of Railay was gorgeous and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi January 5th 2011

Lucky for me, because I'm tired, but unfortunately for you, because it's boring, day 4 was largely uneventful. It was Saturday and we needed to fly from Bangkok to Krabi. Krabi and Phuket are the two cities you can fly into to visit the southern islands. They are about 12-14 hours by bus and clearly we did not have extra time on our hands this trip. So we flew :) We took a taxi from Khaosan to the Bangkok airport early Saturday morning. We passed the large place where the King lives. Our taxi driver pointed it out and added how much he, and all the people of Thailand, love and respect their King. We heard that a lot while we were there. At the airport there was a huge shrine to him. The flight to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi December 19th 2010

Because of our tight schedule, we decided to get a tour to Kanchanaburi rather than try to do the trip ourselves. We had to be back the same day because of an early flight the next morning. So we did it the easier and probably more expensive way. If I can get back to Thailand I would like to explore Kanchanaburi a little more but this time we did a tour. A big van picked us up in Bangkok at 6am. We had a 2 hour drive until we arrived in Kanchanaburi and picked up our tour guide. She was a young Thai woman who grew up in the town. The first thing we did was go to the bridge over the River Kwai. I tried to find good information on this online and didn't. Basically, ... read more

After traveling from Cheongju to Incheon, Incheon to Beijing, and then Beijing to Bangkok we arrived at our hotel near the airport around midnight. The hotel picked us up from the airport so transportation was very convenient! We instantly noticed the number of scooters on the road. It's awesome and hilarious. We saw more scooters on the freeway than we did cars. Of course most of them are without helmets and have 2-4 people all riding on one scooter. We were able to sleep through a number of planes landing because we were pretty exhausted. When I woke up to birds chirping and really warm air I couldn't sleep anymore! It was amazing to wake up to that after being in below freezing weather in Korea and China. I was so excited to finally be in ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China December 16th 2010

From my journal. December 8th Today is day 1 of our ONLY vacation for the year. Six days off for the whole year. We have worked every single day for 9 months, that's a lot! We left Cheongju this morning at 4:30am. It was freezing and I guess it ended up snowing all day, so we missed the first big snow of the winter but that is just fine with me! :) We got to Incheon at 6:50 for our 9:30 flight so we had plenty of time. We flew to Beijing where we had a 9 hour layover. Luckily, we found out that we WERE allowed to leave the airport without visa's, despite what the internet said. I was so excited because we had really been hoping we could make it the Great Wall. And ... read more

This is me blogging. I can do it. I can do it because I promised myself that if I wrote a blog then I could watch an episode of The Office. So here I go. I've had a number of different things in my head that I wanted to blog about: The first was the worst. We got robbed again. I'm not sure which was worse, the first time or the second time. In my mind, they were both pretty terrible. The first time was the cash, sunglasses, and 2 cameras. This time, it was Vicki. Vicki the scooter. The scooter that I rode to hot yoga in the mornings, work in the afternoons, home from work in the evenings, to home plus EVERY time I needed something from the store, to downtown when I wanted ... read more

Like I said it was WONDERFUL to have Jeanne visiting the last week of September and into the beginning of October. She brought fall and beautiful weather with her! I'd like to give her a shout out for traveling around the world (2 layovers) with many suitcases and a BIKE in a huge BIKE CASE, by herself! Here are some pictures from the trip! The first weekend was spent in Seoul. And Monday through Saturday we hung out in the lovely Cheongju. It was a sad goodbye but she's coming back! In less than 6 months! P.S. There are two pages to this blog so if you want to see all of the pictures click to the next page. Enjoy!... read more
