Only 19 hrs and 14 mins to go before we depart Canada to Germany, then on to Oslo. Shelley and I are packed up and ready to go tomorrow morning. We have some last minute things to do in the morning. Final prep, eat breakfast, load the car, and say goodbye to Maggie 😔. We have arranged to have someone stay here in the house with her, and for the last part of our vacation, Shelley’s Mom will come for a few days to hang out with Maggie. Time for sleep now. I woke up this morning to beautiful, bright sunshine! I’ve had awesome weather during my stay here in Sechelt/Vancouver. I slept in this morning waking up around 7:30 or so. I had a shower and went downstairs to enjoy the breakfast that the hotel puts on. It was pretty decent. Scrambled eggs with turkey sausage links, some ’home fries’; chunky potatoes with some chunks of sautéed peppers and onions. Coffee, of course. Finishing that, I went back up to the room and then got things tidied up. I then went out to start my day. I walked from here to the post office to post a parcel in the mail to Mom, and then walked to Gastown. I wanted to buy a couple of t-shirts for the family, and took some video and photos (see attached). ... read more

I had a good sleep last night. I woke up and stripped the bed and then got the sheets into the laundry to have them washed and dried so Jeanne wouldn’t have to make the bed when I left. Quick shower and then a ‘gather everything up’ bit of time in the condo. I served Jeanne the last of her pancakes from Ricky’s and coffee with bacon. We then sat and chatted for a while. I brought up a picture taken of Jeanne when she was about five years old. That brought an exclamation and broad smile to her face! I did a few more errands for her and made sure there wasn’t anything she needed to do when I left. Then, it was time to say goodbye. I left the condo and walked down the ... read more

This morning I brought a pipe with me down to the water front to have a bit of quiet time. I brought my Peterson pipe loaded up with a tobacco that had a bit of coffee flavouring. Delicious. It was nice to just be by the water and hear it ‘lapping’ up against the shore. Visually beautiful along there. If I lived there, that would be a morning routine spot for sure. Gorgeous. Then, I went to pick up some breakfast for Jeanne and I. I went to Ricky’s All Day Grill Pancake House and bought a couple of breakfasts. I brought them home and she was in the living room sipping on the coffee that I had made before I left. She was very surprised with the breakfast. Scrambled eggs, rye toast, buttermilk pancakes, bacon, ... read more

Good morning! Woke up this morning in my sister’s apartment in Vancouver. Had a fresh shower and got dressed. She made us some coffee and we’re now getting things ready to go in the car and drive to Horseshoe Bay and the ferry terminal to catch the ferry to Gibsons, BC. The ferry line up was fierce, but we had reservations so that made it better. Lots of traffic getting out of Vancouver over the Lion’s Gate Bridge, put us behind a wee tad, but we made it to Horseshoe Bay in time. We were loaded quickly onto the ferry and left only ten minutes late; not too bad. I was hungry (time change still affecting me) so I opted for some breakfast. It was delicious. We walked around the boat a little bit and snooped ... read more

Departed Ottawa. The airport check in process was easy. I always have to wait a little bit to actually see a person when checking my bag because they have to verify my Veteran status to receive the free bag check in. Once that was done, it was off to the dreaded security check in. The line was long, but it moved along quite well. They’ve made some improvements since I’ve last travelled. For example, the person at the start of the cue for security only verifies that you have a boarding pass now instead of scanning it or checking your identification. Then, you get in the line with others. Once you get to the ‘head’ of the line, another security screening agent will indicate which line of machine you’ll head to. Once there, you scan your ... read more

Shelley and I decided to leave our campsite a day early to make it home before the bad weather arrived. It was predicted that there would be some high winds and thunderstorms coming into our region and we really didn't want to drive the RV through that. The traffic through Quebec City was mostly avoided as we remained north on the 40 and then the 50 highway towards Gatineau. This was the best decision really. We enjoyed our drive back, but we'd been behind the wheel a lot in the last two weeks and the anticipation of getting home was nice. Everything was just as we left it. Several neighbours came over to greet us and hear about our trip. We couldn't believe the amount of stuff we were bringing back with us! We made so ... read more

We’re camping on the Ile-d’Orleans….and this blog today actually begins in the year 1579, in Outlines, Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France. Jean Roy dit Desjardins (Joigny) (Lauzier) was my 11th great-grandfather, on my mother’s maternal side of the family. All we know about Jean Roy is that he seduced Marie-Marguerite Boucquenier (Brouchu) in January 1604, and did not marry her, although she gave him a son, Olivier Roy, who was born and baptised on October 2 1604 in Saint-Andre's Roman Catholic church in Joigny, France. Here is a link to a photo of the inside of that church today: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3580894#/media/File:Joigny_-_Eglise_Saint-André_2.jpg Olivier grew up in that region of France, and became a ‘Maître Tonnelier”; that is, a Cooper, or barrel maker. He married Ma... read more

During our drive to the campground located on Ile d'Orleans, we passed through Kamouraska. This place has some family history to it. Much of the family history will be found in the next blog with Ile d'Orleans, but this little town played a big part of it for one side of my family. If you clicked on that link for Kamouraska, you will see someone named Charles-Alfred Roy dit Desjardins. He's a relative of ours! He is my third cousin, five times removed....lol. He was a cousin to my third great-grandfather, Pierre Roy dit Desjardins. It was Pierre who was one of the many Desjardins who made the decision to leave their farms and livelihoods in Kamouraska to venture west to begin a new life for he and his family. He went as far as Manitoba ... read more
