rebecca newbold I just graduated college and I started my job last May as a firefighter for the US Forest Service...so much fun, but not my ultimate career choice. The Lord has provided the time and money for me to travel this winter and I am taking full advantage of that! I will leave November 20 and arrive home March 17, 2007. Most of the time will be spent in South East Asia, India, and Europe. I have never travelled like this before and I have absolutely no idea what to expect. It makes me a tad nervous, but I am thrilled and thankful for the opportunity. I can't wait for the unexpected, the awkward moments, the learning and the adventure to begin!

Home At Last

 Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence
As we flew over the Grand Canyon courtesy of Air India, I kinda wanted to laugh and cry. No, I didn't cry (how ridiculous!), I just started clapping and singing out a little, "Oh say can you see..." when we touched down. That's not bad right? Though when I wouldn't stop clapping Dallas gave me an evil glare and said he feels like I'm trying to embarass him. It is so good to be home. Flying into LAX you get a perfect view of the smog covered valley and the grid of freeways and housing tracks that is Los Angeles. But [View Full Entry]

Family Ties

 Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence
Three and a half months of traveling through Asia and everything goes smooth and comfortably...now I meet up with my family and it's chaos. I don't know what it is...maybe the fact that we went from two people to fifteen, or the fact that we are now in possession of three rental vehicles, or maybe it's just that everyone is newly excited to be abroad...whatever the case, there's something buzzing in the air and I think it's just the same thing that buzzes on Christmas, Thanksgiving, family birthdays, and anytime a bunch of relatives get together. Dallas and I left Delhi [View Full Entry]

I spent another week since my last blog at the girls' place in North Delhi and it was definitely a good week. It's been fun to see how they live their day to day life. I've spent a lot of time with the landlords who live downstairs and with the girls' friends from PMI. What great people! I've had such a great time playing guitar with Sabina, cooking butter chicken and nan with Ravinder and Mona, and visiting with everyone from PMI. I feel like I could stay here and settle in quite nicely. I mentioned in my last blog that [View Full Entry]

Nearly two weeks in Delhi and still no blog!! This is the third time I have attempted to write a blog since being here and I can only hope that this one gets posted. Nothing is easy or fast in India. A typical hindi saying is "Koi bot nee!" which means "No problem!" Really? Really, are there no problems? No problems in India, you say? I'm not sure about that. But despite the overwhelming number of problems in this country, it is amazing. It is a beautiful mix of old and new, shocking and mundane, problematic and sensible, loving and agressive. At Aimee's house--a Bible study for local believers
It's inevitable. You visit a country, you meet the people, you endure the rustic living conditions and you fall in love with the place. Cambodia has a way about it that I'm not sure how to describe. It hit me the other day that I really want you to experience this with me...to really understand the tastes, the smells, the sights, the sounds. There have been times on my travels where I find myself in the strangest situations and I wish there was a way to bottle those moments and open them later over a cup of coffee. Like in Siem [View Full Entry]

So, maybe there haven't been any encounters with planes or trains, but Automobiles and I are standing back to back on a long dusty road with our hands near our holsters, ready to duke it out just as soon as someone counts to 10. Just me and the Automobiles. I have had enough and I think a duel is the appropriate reaction to the severe punishment that Automobiles (namely automobiles of the bus persuasion) have put me through. It all started a week ago when we hopped the more expensive and less convenient/comfortable/sensible public bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok; a [View Full Entry]

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
Juliette seemed to take a lot of solo pics, so I mocked her.
Northern Thailand still proves to be heaps different than southern Thailand...exchange dread locked Thais for little old ladies wearing hill tribe garb and soaking in the rays for trekking through the mountains. Not a bad exchange if you ask me, though to be honest I will forever miss the days on Koh Phangan...a truly pristine island that granted me some life long memories and a wicked tan. I look forward to the next time the Lord provides a hammock, a white sand beach and a coconut shake. The day after my up close and personal King Cobra encounter, I had an [View Full Entry]

Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Andy, Me and Vas
Christmas came and went...Thai style. On Christmas Eve I enjoyed a whole red snapper with all the parts attached for dinner at Liberty Guest House. This German family ordered a BBQ and everyone at the guest house decided to join in, so I enjoyed my Christmas Eve dinner with folks from all over the world and then did a little hammock swinging to some Beatles and cheesy Christmas music. Not too bad. On Christmas morning I called my family through skype (by the way, if you ever feel like chatting, you should really sign up for skype. just download it for [View Full Entry]

Lazy days

I cannot believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve. It is really strange to be away from the Christmas buzz that I know everyone is enjoying at home. The Thais do Christmas a little bit, but it's not a huge deal here. You see the occasional Christmas tree and you'll run into a Christmas song or two here and there, but nothing like at home. What's even stranger is that I've been in my swimsuit practically everyday for the last two weeks. I know at home everyone is bundled up and Mom and Dad are even going out Christmas caroling with the [View Full Entry]

One month. It has been one month since our embarkation from the US of A. What a crazy month. It's weird to reflect on it. This last week has been tough for me... and consequently probably tough for Dallas as well. Let's just say I probably wasn't the best traveling companion. And let's be honest, it will probably (guaranteed) happen again...in approximately 26 days...if you catch what I'm throwing. Yeah, I was an emotional, girly, grumpy mess. I cried three times yesterday! Once in the morning because I was sad about an email. Once later that day because I watched Forest [View Full Entry]
