We awoke in our quite secluded campsite and took a walk in the woods, only to find out the area has been troubled by black bears. Fortunately for us we did not see any evidence or suggestion of bears while we were there. We posed for our 35th anniversary photo in the woods and then left for our day's adventure. We rode over 130 miles round trip to see the Natural Bridges National Park. On the way we hiked into the hills to get a closer look at ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings. Aside from nearly running out of gas on the Silverwing, the day was perfect. We might not have made it back to civilization if it had not been for a sympathetic park ranger who sold me two gallons of gas (at the low price ... read more

Spent a much too short morning hiking in the Arches National Park. The park was full of beautiful dynamic rock formations. Some with huge towering spires and others with rocks balancing on pinnacles. We spent the majority of our time hiking to see one of the most famous arches up close. Barb and I hiked up hill along a 1.5 mile trail to reach Delicate Arch. Despite my urging to avoid risky climbing, Barb ventured into dangerous rock formations. In the afternoon we drove to our next camp site, Devils Canyon, near Blanding, UT . It was remote and beautiful. ... read more

The drive from Custer, SD to Denver was through miles and miles of flat pasture land but once we passed through downtown Denver our adventure began. Barb took the wheel to give Steve a break not knowing what lay ahead. She survived 70 miles of 8 -10% grades up and down the mountains with rain. She conquered the 24,000 lb beast of a motorhome. We were so tired and stressed, that we pulled off at Frisco for a great Itilian dinner and some well deserved rest in the hills overlooking the town. We awoke to a spectacular view. On the 9th we visited Colorado National Monument Park and took the motorcycle for a breath-taking ride around hair-pin turns and steep hills, almost running over two big horn sheep. The monument as well as the rest of the ... read more

A beautiful day in the Black Hills. Spent relaxed morning and visited Jewel Cave just ten miles west of our camp site. Apparently Jewel Cave is the second largest cave in North America with over 155 mi of carted passage ways. We did just a half mile in 80 minutes. The pictures do not do it justice. We visited the Museum of Woodcarving after lunch and then spent some time shoping in down town Custer. Tomorrow morning we leave for Utah and will be on the road for the next two days. We expect to cover 700 miles with our overnight tomorrow somewhere around Denver. We don't expect to post any updates untile we reach Moab, UT.... read more

Our first full day in the Black Hills. We rode from our campground near Custer to see the Crazy Horse monument. The project has been underway for 63 years and is being continued by the family of the original artist. After buffalo burgers for lunch in Custer, we took a two hour motorcycle ride (50 miles) through buffalo grass lands. We experienced several close encounters with animals who were very obviously familar with humans. The Mules appeared to stand intentionally at the gates begging food from the passing vehicles much like small peasant children in a port where tourists are off loading from a ship. We returned to Crazy Horse after dark for an unexpected birthday celebration to see a laser light show on the mountain and a dynamite blast that cleared away hundreds of tons ... read more

Left the Badlands early Monday. Drove 70 miles to Mt Rushmore via Wall, SD (home of the oldest pharmacy, 1931) and Rapid City, SD for our obligatory Wal Mart shopping spree. After hiking the Mt Rushmore trail and taking dozens of photos of the scupture, we ended up in Custer for our next three nights. ... read more

A day of relaxation. Spent the morning in the KOA campground doing clean up and minor repairs. Sink drains leak and doors break. Took off on the Silverwing at 2:30PM to explore the oldest homestead in the area from 1909. Life would have been very rough back then. Living in a mud brick house and farming dry, hard ground. Experienced sunset over the hills and attended an evening ranger program on the night sky. Very clear and impressive with not ground-light polution. ... read more

Stayed overnight along the White River just south of the Badlands National park. Unpacked the Silverwing and took our first ride in the AM. Walked a mile into the park and experienced the beauty of the park up close. But no rattle snakes seen. After lunch we did the Loop Road and visited all of the amazing look out vistas. Five hours on the motor cycle, and Barb is a great back seat passenger. She even leans with me while taking pictures over my shoulder. Sunset against the colorful rock landscape is beautiful. We were ready for a hot meal and bed after a long day. Motor-homing is great!... read more

Awoke in an empty parking lot off I29 just north of Omaha. Drove to Sioux Falls and spent several hours walking around the historic falls for which the city was named. Except for a brief stop in Mitchell, SD to see the Corn Palace we drove straight west to Interior, SD. Here our real adventure begins. ... read more

Drove 650 miles in the first 24 hours. Spent our first night in a Walmart parking lot. Reached my cousin's home by evening of day one. Had a wonderful time with them. Celebrated Garrett's (dad) birthday, played with the children, then resumed our driving. Barb did well behind the wheel, maggie adjusted to the road and we escaped accidents and injuries. Having a great time.... read more
