Our first full day in the Black Hills. We rode from our campground near Custer to see the Crazy Horse monument. The project has been underway for 63 years and is being continued by the family of the original artist.

After buffalo burgers for lunch in Custer, we took a two hour motorcycle ride (50 miles) through buffalo grass lands. We experienced several close encounters with animals who were very obviously familar with humans. The Mules appeared to stand intentionally at the gates begging food from the passing vehicles much like small peasant children in a port where tourists are off loading from a ship.

We returned to Crazy Horse after dark for an unexpected birthday celebration to see a laser light show on the mountain and a dynamite blast that cleared away hundreds of tons of rock.

Artist model of Crazy Horse

Interesting to see something that makes Steve look diminutive.
