Serving the fantasy Fine analysis of tourists' snap and share mentality and of our manufactured, edited adventurers' images. So often, I've seen people miss the whole experience because their vision is filtered through the tiny camera lens. And though I love snapping photos myself, I prefer to travel in the rainy, off-season to avoid these elbowing experiences. Great to have the kids there to give perspective--what are we doing?!
Bluddy hell I can't believe the thousands of people in your pic!! Madness. I always fancied going back with the girls ... but some things are best left to memory. If you went south to the beaches, drop me a line about it as I wonder how much that's changed in 10 years! Yup, 10 years since that fateful day since we embarked on our Tibet-athon .... and I know, I know, I need to post the pics of our ravaged faces ;)
Better left to memory. Still well worth a visit. But better you modify your expectations. About the beaches - we did go south and found a very sweet spot. I should hopefully have details up here by next week.
UNFORGETTABLE It always reminds me of the so many ONGs who work inside the temples. They work to help disabled children. They do a great work. Those are the most otstanding religious monuments I have ever seen. It´s a great please to get lost inside the monuments. I like your pictures. You can help people while travelling.
Wanna travel more With this entry, you encourage me to travel more and discover so many cultures I only have a slight idea of, great photos, enchanting writing, cheers. Frank
Childhood memories People used to say, it was a shame they wouldn't remember most of this. Truth is they don't. But I like to think these experiences contribute to the people they will become. They do however both remember and "love the Philippines", as this was the last country we visited!
Brings back Memories I really enjoyed reading this blog and it bought back wonderful memories of our time there last year, you even stayed on some of the same campsites which were empty on our travels!
Brings back Memories Have you found the secret to a magical season when the traffic is lighter, the campsites are freer and yet the climate and landscape are still as enthralling? If so, I fear this may fall outside of my officially designated vacation periods :-(
A lazy summer in the South of France. I think we probably share that fantasy with half the known world! Itinerant campers and Monaco residents are the unlikely bedfellows who seem to be able to pull this off.
When in Rome...I mean France, Ha! The scenery is stunning. The views, the foods, the wine...ah the joys. I would love to have seen a video of your conversation with the lifeguard. Priceless.
Proper attire Love the south of France, but that summer high season is a bear for finding places to stay--glad you found those campgrounds. Just so you don't feel alone, I've been barred from lots of hot springs in Europe and South America when wearing shorts and a camisole. Now, I've always got my bathers in tow. So bizarre!
Favourite destination Being sent from pillar to post in search of campsites was a blessing in disguise, leading to the discovery of some magical places we might never have visited. One might be tempted to call it serendipity had it not been for the fact you could throw an old boot over your shoulder and it would invariably land in some previously unheard of medieval village!
The Nuba people Our world can be harsh and unforgiving in some locations. I can't imagine living day to day in that kind of situation. My delay in responding to this one is because my mind has been jumbled with thoughts since I read it and still don't know what to say. Power and greed can ruin potentially good people. Choices. I'm glad there are people who are trying to help them. Bless them.
I don't expect many people to respond to this type of subject matter. People click on expecting fantasy, adventure and escapism and instead they get a face-full of reality. Perhaps this is why these conflicts drag on for generations without much notice by the outside world. Though I agree with you, I have gratitude and admiration for those who are actively trying to help these people. Especially those on the ground risking their own lives, driven primarily by their compassion for mankind.
