Warning: There were animals slightly injured in this story. Sorry. Ambue Ari national reserve is a rarely heard of animal sanctuary somewhat off the beaten track (which is what drove me to go there in the first place). The park is for animals, normally the animals have been maltreated or kept in captivity by circuses or ambitious pet owners. Those that travel through bolivia will probably hear about Villa Tunari and intiwarayassi, which are part of the same movement with the same objectives and whatnot, which normally has about 30 or 40 volunteers. Whereas Ambue Ari normally has a maximum of 5 or 6 (and that's pushing it). And there's a core body of 6 bolivians that run the park so knowing spanish is a big plus. The animals that one finds in the parks range ... read more

well its that time again. about a month ago now I tearfully said goodbye to colombia and took a plane to laeticia the southern most tip of colombia where people go to visit the jungle and some take yague from a shaman (a cleansing halucinogenic which apparently never fails to make one uncontrolably poo and urinate the first time you take it, the second time something else bad happens dont remember what and then afterwards its all ok again. though personally i have had no need for a drug to inspire diarrhea having just been in the throes of my eighth bout (god bless my delicate stomach and its attempts to adapt to south america). laeticia is a nice place and i went there in order to get a boat from tabatinga just the other side ... read more

Disclaimer: In case any one reads this and thinks that colombia is dangerous or unsavoury on account of what I write or perhaps appear to insinuate I assure you it isnt; the people here are incredibly helpful and often go out of their way to help you, and I would definitely reccommend anyone to come here, no worries. (just the stretch of road around ipiales at night - apart from that safer than a lot of other countries. nb Guy I was travelling with left colombia for ecuador (by plane) because he was afraid something would happen here, and got a bus straight away to the peruvian boader the moment he arrived so as to distance himself from the "horror" that was colombia. The bus was stopped by 3 men with guns in santo domingo who ... read more

So a week and a bit ago I bought a tour and plane ticket for galapagos. I left it to the last minute, thinking and hoping that I´d receive a bargain, o I went to a few travel agents last monday, who all told me the ´last minute price´of 650 dollars, so I used my incredible haggling skills to lower it to 630, and left feeling rather pleased with my efforts. To be told by the landlady in my house on my return that I paid WAY more than I should have, more like 500 would be appropriate at the last minute. So if anyone reading this is going to go to the galapagos and is going to buy a last minute price, please fleece (timar) them as they fleeced me. The tour was for eight ... read more

well it´s been an eventful week and a half for all in ecuador and quito especially so why not discuss it in blog form I thought. There were sporadic demonstrations in the streets of quito the past few months, but it all started to heat up a week and a half ago whilst I was asleep early ready to get up and go to visit the valley of the volcanoes (as it is known) 2 hours to the south of quito. Whilst I was asleep a state of emergency was temporarily called by young lucio guittirez (the president of ecuador) until the US stepped in and said dont be silly, and then it stopped again. Meanwhile I was soon off on my way to see quilatoa a volcano that has a lake inside it, which was ... read more

Thought I´d write a little about the places and families Ive been with the past two months. First of all applogies this is pretty long, and ive made no attempt to edit it, so youve been warned. As I said in the first blog the first guy schmoozes with Bill Clinton. After a week there I moved house so I could learn more spanish because I was just speaking English with the people I was living with. The set up was the family lived in the flat upstairs and we were herded into as tight a space as possible so the ex finance minister of ecuador could make a preety penny (or so it seemed). If anyone out there wants to do a homestay make sure you enquire what the circumstances are, ie are you a ... read more

Unfortunately this site has a limited amount of places to choose from in Ecuador. Weekend just past I went to Atacames which is on the North West coast of Ecuador, it´s about a 7 hour coach journey for 4 quid from quito. We stayed at a hostel owned by italian people and it was clean and right on the coast for $5 a night which was nice. We got there on thrusday in the evening and went out to one of the numerous bars along the coast. There are too many bars on the coast there are about 50 bars with 10 people serving at each one, with about 5 customers in each bar. Ecuadoreans really haven´t grasped the concept of financial viability yet. We met some people on a end of college trip and spoke ... read more

Well I´ve been here for two weeks and thought it was about time I put down a few memories in this blog. I am now learning spanish and helping at a project with street kids in quito. I have been in two houses with families so far, not at all what I expected. The first guy´s house who I was in was the ex-finance minister of Ecuador, knew Bill Clinton before he was in office and is mates with Donald Trump. The school for the street kids is real fun they´re surprisingly tactile with visitors and volunteers, but are very violent with each other. One of the most disturbing things to see was a 3 year old actually put up his dukes like a real fighter against an older kid, and when he punched he didn´t ... read more
