We had decided to stay south of Alicante as it didn’t seem to offer us much to sightsee, at least nothing new that we haven’t already experienced, and a day at the beachside sounded more like what we would enjoy. Today started out partly cloudy with a light but persistent breeze and it turned out a day that keeping a hat on just a little difficult. We had to take a space between showering as the hot water in Spain’s smallest shower cubicle (probably equated to one we had in our hotel in Istanbul on the BBA V1) ran out just as I was finished. Luckily it was one of those fast fill and heat cylinders. My experience in the shower wasn’t enhanced by the water that rose to my ankles and I found out after ... read more

And we thought we were the only guests in this block of apartments. Wrong! We had both been in a perfect sleep until noise coming from the footpath outside the apartments woke us both at a time that people should be tucked up in their beds asleep. We thought that whoever it was going home from their celebrations would carry on somewhere else but no! There must have been at least 4 or 5 people and they were coming into the apartment block. First fiddling with the locked gate as we had earlier when coming home from dinner at a more respectable hour. And then ‘bouncing off the walls’ as they came up to the first floor. We half expected them to knock or try something else with our door but thankfully they didn’t and the ... read more

Camp dwellers tend to be up and about early as they get the first use of the communal showers although we didn’t have to worry about queuing up as we had our own shower in the bungalow. But we had a reasonable distance to travel today and we want to make as much time enjoying the facilities at our overnight stop in Mojacar which should include a terrace with a sea view. However, we could tell something was wrong with the camp water supply as we turned on the shower and only a dribble of water emerged and then nothing! Was it just our bungalow or was it the whole camp? We had breakfast and wandered down to the office which opened at 9am to see if the water problem was just us or the whole ... read more

The first day of May dawned an absolutely glorious morning and with the sun glinting on the recent snow dropped on the Sierra Nevada mountains it was a perfect time for photos and video of the rather dramatic scenery. The Sunday bus timetable to Granada wasn’t as frequent as the Mon-Sat version which had been hourly. Today it was 2 hourly and we decided the 9.20am was way too early and that 11.20am sounded better and would give us time to explore the opportunity of Alhambra tickets at the venue before searching out tapas for lunch in a cafe/bar. We had noticed the young women with the tent head off to Granada to check out the nightime bars and this morning all was quiet from their tent site. The tent had stayed up well so they ... read more

The cloud of yesterday has cleared away this morning to another brilliantly fine day. However whatever that wind change and cooling down last evening was it has left behind a new dusting of snow on the Sierra Nevada mountain range which rises up dramatically behind the city of Granada. We hadn’t been able to make the mountains out clearly last night when we arrived as they were hidden by the cloud but this morning with the cloud gone we realised just how close the mountain range is. We don’t have tickets for Granada’s main tourist attraction, the Alhambra. We hadn’t appreciated the popularity of the place and although we could have bought them online once we knew the dates we were going to be in the city the tickets for today and tomorrow were all gone. ... read more

For once it has dawned a little overcast which should actually make for pleasant driving conditions as we head for Granada and our accommodation in a bungalow in a camping ground for 3 nights. There hadn’t been much on offer in Granada perhaps because of the holiday weekend that we are entering and so we will experience our first try at ‘slumming it ‘on the BBA V3. We managed to get the transfer of our ‘stuff ‘from the apartment up in the two lifts to the car at street level in 2 moves which was pretty astounding or was it perhaps because our general food supplies are a bit low at present and there wasn’t quite as much to carry. The N432 between Cordoba and Granada shows as a scenic road all the day so we ... read more

Looks like a good day for some sightseeing in old Cordoba with a little bit of cloud cover. The BBA’s local tour director has worked out the bus timetable to downtown and we are scheduled for the 11am departure from just down the street so time enough for a bit of a lie in and leisurely breakfast. This apartment, at the bottom of the hill, would be nicer if we had a balcony as we thought we were going to have because then we could at least make the most the view out over the bush. We weren’t quite sure which direction the bus would come from but it will only be a few steps across a quiet road if we are on the wrong side. It is always good when you are waiting at an ... read more

Another good night’s sleep in a very spacious and comfortable apartment in the rather unique location (for us) of a golfing resort. Before we had breakfast on the terrace we hoofed it down to the golf course to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately there was some cloud and the sun took a little longer than expected to break free of the cover. When it did though it produced a light rosy hue on the apartments that line the golf course and a similar result on the Rock in the distance. While we were taking all this in we had spotted a man above us on the golf course fairway itself with two Alsatian’s one of which took an interest in us heading our way barking quite loudly. The man didn’t seem to do anything as the dog ... read more

Tuesday 26thand the day after ANZAC Day, a day in our calendar that has become very important to us as we remember those who gave their lives in wars on the other side of the world to keep the world free for us and our fellow New Zealanders and Australian’s to be able to live and amongst other things, travel. We had commemorated ANZAC Day when we got home from dinner last night and watched a short video we had made of the ANZAC dawn service at the Mount last year. This year, yesterday, our daughter Erin was attending with husband Brent and she was wearing the medals her late grandfather never claimed when his service in the armed forces came to an end. That big fat high (anticyclone in the language of those from down under)is still sitting above us and it was just a lovely morning to wake up to with the bright sun and the azure sky from our penthouse apartment bedroom window. That sky did change a little later in the morning but more about that soon. Gretchen had sussed out a way to get to Cadiz which on the map doesn’t look that far away but in reality because of a lot of wasteland and water, it is over 30km to drive one way. She had figured out where a ferry went between Puerto de Santa Maria and downtown Cadiz and the cost at €2.75 each was going to work out cheaper than the petrol to drive, and then find a car park with a ... read more
