15/2/10 and 16/2/10: The next two days were spent hopping on and off trains and walking around Mumbai. Our main goal was to buy another laptop and battery charger for our Steri-pen as the other one broke. This proved more difficult than first thought and we found ourselves going from one side of Mumbai to the other. It didn’t matter that much because we really were able to see the real Mumbai. On the first day of walking it was safe enough to walk in thongs but after walking some tem km’s an old ankle injury decided to flare up leaving it difficult to walk without extreme pain and this would end up haunting me for the next three weeks. Jacinta had her own problems on the second day walking down the three flights of stairs ... read more

13/2/10: We both slept quiet well and the train trip was running smoothly until we were told that the train was running 3hrs late because people kept pulling the stop chord all through the night to get off. It got boring and we ran of things to do until a very young child started to get bored and peek over in our direction. His mother was more than happy to palm him off to us for entertainment so we kept him busy for a couple of hours playing games and singing songs. Later I also spoke to some Indians from Mumbai and they had been to Varanasi for a holiday. We compared places to go and what to see in the rest India, they later directed us were to buy a train ticket to Colaba some ... read more

11/2/10: Late last night Jacinta felt terrible until she was that sick that she ended up throwing up until there was nothing left in her stomach. This made her feel a whole lot better but even more confused about what sickness she may have, was it flu or stomach? We walked the ghats again in the morning until Jacinta had no energy left. We walked as far as the biggest burning ghat and were approached by a Indian man saying “no photos no photos of burning body” Of course everyone already knew this, it was just an excuse to start talking to you about the cremation process. They also say they are a fire man that helps burn the bodies or a volunteer that helps the elderly waiting to die in the towers directly behind the ... read more

10/2/10: We took it very easy and went for another walk along the ghats. We ended up back at the Manikarnika burning ghat. It is the most powerful experience and I’m sure we will back again tomorrow to just sit and take everything in. It seems that only the men are allowed to be in the vicinity of the cremations and with the most riches of Indians being cremated right on the banks of the Ganges they have the most amounts of wood and decorations around them before being placed on the pile of timber by family members. Before this all happens the bodies are submerged in the Ganges River to be so called cleansed before cremation. Today was a very powerful day for us to watch as a family really were upset by the death ... read more

9/2/10: I never got any sleep as the whole night was spent on the toilet. Jacinta didn’t get any sleep either and her flu made it hard for her to breath. Feeling so drained I had to now replace the nurturance that was flushed down the toilet some 24+ times. I also had to get some throat lozenge’s, and orange juice for Jacinta and some precious water and toilet paper. I managed to find all this relatively easy and made my way back through the shit filled alley ways or Galis in Hindi. I managed to pass a blind man using his stick to tap on the Galis walls to find his way back home. After 10min of winding my way back and forth I managed to get lost in the maze of back alleys. I ... read more

8/2/10: We got up at 9:00 to have some breakfast and get ready for the ghats of Varanasi. We were going to hire a guide to take us around Varanasi to explain the history, temples and the spiritual side of burning the body’s on the Ganges but with the 350rs/person seemed very steep so we didn't commit to anything just yet and decided to scope out the town first. We were both were curious about the ghats and finding out that our hotel backed almost right onto the Ganges river made it a quick minutes walk into another part of India that anywhere in the world could not match. Being one of the oldest cities in the world it was also very original and you could see that this was a very holy city just by ... read more

7/2/10: The train stopped at 12:30 in the middle of the night and with myself drifting in and out of dream land I didn’t realise until 4:00 in the morning that we hadn’t move in over three to four hours, I thought the train must of broke down. It wasn’t until 7:00 in the morning that I managed to get myself out of bed to unwillingly go to the train toilet. It wasn’t until 8:00 that I found out that our train line to Varanasi was bombed by a Terrorist attack at 11:30 last night and we were only an hour from where it took place. With our ETA being 10:00am we didn’t leave the train station of Madhapur until 12:00am and had another full 12-13hrs to go. We were pissed off only because now we ... read more

6/2/10: It was our last day in Chowringhee Kolkata and we mostly just chilled until we had to make our way to the Howrah train station at 6:00pm. We came across an Indian snake charmer who is so stereo typical for India and I watched as he took two cobras out of his hessian sacks and proceeded to play music his Indian snake charming flute. It was pretty cool and I was only just saying to Jacinta that morning when we might see that. We had some dinner at our local restaurant on the corner and not having meat in for the last 5-6 days was driving both of us crazy so we ordered a Goat madras and chicken curry. It was so nice and it was just what we were looking for, we only hoped ... read more

5/2/10: We got ourselves out and about by 10:00 and needed to get our mobile phone sorted after a message we had received from Vodaphone indicating we hadn’t finished some documentation. On the way we crossed a herd of goats just walking through the streets and it was the strangest thing to see in the middle of the city and we both had a good laugh and carried on. We walked back down Park St onto Chowringhee Rd walking north. There were market stalls located all on this road and sell most things like bags, sunglasses, cosmetic products etc. We were trying to find some sleeping bags for our trip as it was going to get cold in Varenasi. We found a large market place contained under one roof and as soon as we got close ... read more

Asia » India » West Bengal » Kolkata February 3rd 2010

3/2/10: I had the best night sleep in a long time and the cool winter temperature of Kolkata made it a pleasure to sleep in. We woke up at 7:00 Kolkata time and I finished some more of my blog until Jacinta woke up. In the safety of our room it was hard to believe we were in India until a half hour later the constant honking of horns started. There was one driver that sat on his horn for at least a minute and I was sure it got stuck or something. We took our time getting ready for our first experience in India and by the time we packed and left it was almost 11:00. I think Jacinta had butterflies and didn’t know if she was strong enough to cope. We walked out and ... read more
