Colombia is great!

Published: April 23rd 2012South America » Colombia

Can you even believe we’re in Colombia already! It seems like time flies faster and faster every time I write to you. Amelia and I couldn’t wait to get here when we heard about how green the country was, because that meant we would have lots of trees to play in. Besides, I just found out some of my family moved here and we get to go visit them a little later on. We first flew into a city called Cartagena, an old Spanish colonial city that still has a lot of the same buildings and even the same big stone wall around it. We even saw a pirate ship that was docked outside! Of course it wasn’t full of real pirates, but it was still really cool to see! We actually got to see it ... read more

Yes everyone, we’re still alive and well. It’s hard to find the time to keep up with the blog when we keep ourselves so busy all the time! I sure am glad Amelia is having fun with us now, too. Now wherever I go I’m not the only monkey around. Many of you probably haven’t heard of our next stop, Nicaragua. Well, WE didn’t know about it until Jessie and Nate told us about it either. We definitely got some funny stares from people as we were sitting on the top of the bus seats to see outside the windows. I don’t think too many monkeys go backpacking around here. Leon was our first stop and we have to say, we really like it. The highlight here was definitely going volcano boarding. We got to take ... read more

Wylie makes it through Guatemala and El Salvador Can you believe I’ve officially been gone for over a year now? After going to Mexico and Belize, we crossed the border by taking a local bus into Guatemala. It’s definitely very different here, and lots of the women still wear their traditional Mayan dresses that their ancestors used to wear. Our first stop was in Flores which is a tiny island in the middle of a lake. We actually spent Christmas here, too. The people here light LOTS of fireworks to celebrate. At first I really liked it, but then it made it hard to sleep on Christmas Eve. Poor Amelia still isn’t quite used to all the noise you hear when you’re traveling, so I had Jessie give her a pair of ear plugs so it ... read more

It seems like only yesterday I was sitting on Jessie’s shoulder boarding a plane to Hong Kong and excited as ever to be traveling around Asia. Our time spent there was so much fun I didn’t want it to ever end. We decided to make a stop home to see some family and replace a few things. After all, Nate and Jessie’s backpacks were being held together more by strong tape than anything else. At least now we were ready to go. The biggest difference now was that we weren’t going to have to fly so far to our first destination. In fact, the cheapest flight we could get was to Cancun in Mexico. Instead of staying where all of the expensive resorts, decided to hop on a bus and head south to a town called ... read more

Lots of adventures in New Zealand

OK, I’m not going to lie. I almost let out big monkey tears when Nate and Jessie told me we had to leave the beautiful beaches and hot weather to go to New Zealand, but I still knew I was going to have a good time. As soon as I landed in Auckland on the north island in New Zealand, it was pretty easy to tell that this was sure going to be a lot different than Asia. Nate and Jessie even had to let someone spray off their hiking shoes so that they didn’t bring any diseases that might hurt the plants and animals here. Once we got through the airport, the first thing we would do was get a ride to pick up our campervan with a fold down bed we were renting the ... read more

I know boys and girls, it’s been a LONG time since you’re heard from me. I’ve just be so busy! When you see the next couple of countries I’ve been to I think you’ll understand a little more. After the fun I had at the zoo in Singapore, I was off to the Philippines. We got to the airport plenty early to catch our flight that was at 8:00, but when we looked up at the TV screens that show all of the flights, we didn’t see it anywhere! You’ve probably never heard of this, but we had gotten thrown off by the military time. We assumed that 8:00 was at night when we bought the ticket and didn’t pay close enough attention. In military time 8:00 can only be in the morning because they keep ... read more

A short stop in Singapore

As soon as we landed in Singapore I could tell it was going to be a LOT different than in Indonesia, that’s for sure! We took an MRT, which is just like what we rode on Kuala Lumpur, just about everywhere in the city. People looked at me kind of funny though when we were riding it. I don’t think they’re used to seeing monkeys traveling with humans. We stayed at a hostel where we had an air conditioned room, for ONCE, and shared it with 8 other people. That’s how hostels work. You have to share a room with other people, but it saves you a lot of money because it’s so much cheaper than a hotel or a guesthouse when you’re in expensive cities like this. We even got free breakfast in the morning, ... read more

So many places to see in Indonesia

Can you believe I’ve been gone for over 7 months already! I know I can’t. I just spent the last 7 weeks in a country called Indonesia, which is made up of over 17,000 islands where 739 different languages are spoken. I have a hard enough time just trying to learn ONE new language. At least everyone here can understand one common Indonesian language, and it’s actually not as hard as you’d think to learn it. Little did we know, we would have to learn some FAST in order to go to some of the places we were headed to. We first crossed overland from Borneo into Kalimantan and made our way to a little island called Derawan. It took us a total of 3 days to get here with trying to catch different ferries and ... read more

At home in the jungle on Borneo

Published: August 14th 2011Asia » Malaysia » Sabah

I sure have been busy! The last time I wrote, we were on the Peninsula of Malaysia, but we flew over to the huge island of Borneo and into a town called Kuching. The one thing I was looking forward to more than anything here was going to see some Orangutans. There’s an Orangutan sanctuary outside of Kuching called Seminggoh, where we were headed in hopes that we would get to see some. We took a bus to get there and then hiked on a path for a while until we got to where some of the staff was that works there. Can you believe we were just in time for them to feed the Orangutans? I was so excited I couldn’t stop jumping from Nate’s shoulders to Jessie’s shoulders! I felt like it was the ... read more

Marvelous Malaysia

Published: July 10th 2011Asia » Malaysia

It’s been a LOT of fun being in Thailand and going to some amazing islands, but was time to move on yet again. We crossed over the border into Malaysia and what a different country it is! We stopped on a island called Penang for just a couple of nights before we made it to the Cameron Highlands. It was really neat to see all of the locals enjoying some time away from work to do some hiking and exploring, including going to a strawberry festival and a tea plantation. I had a lot of fun playing with all of the strawberry things in the gift stores! I was hoping that at the strawberry festival I could eat enough strawberries to make me turn red, but you had to pay for all of it and I ... read more
