It seems like only yesterday I was sitting on Jessie’s shoulder boarding a plane to Hong Kong and excited as ever to be traveling around Asia. Our time spent there was so much fun I didn’t want it to ever end. We decided to make a stop home to see some family and replace a few things. After all, Nate and Jessie’s backpacks were being held together more by strong tape than anything else. At least now we were ready to go. The biggest difference now was that we weren’t going to have to fly so far to our first destination. In fact, the cheapest flight we could get was to Cancun in Mexico. Instead of staying where all of the expensive resorts, decided to hop on a bus and head south to a town called Playa del Carmen. As soon as we got there I had a feeling I was going to like it. How could I not? After all, I was back in the sun and warm weather again! There’s one more difference in traveling now. I have a new friend named Amelia who is traveling with us as well. Now I have someone to keep me company when
I can’t go with Nate and Jessie to do something. Pretty cool huh?
Since places to stay are quite a bit more expensive here than Asia, we decided to find a place with dorm beds. That means that you stay in a room with a bunch of other people, usually in bunk beds. The first thing we just had to do once we had a place to stay was find some food. I’m sure most of you know that tacos are from Mexico, and that’s exactly what we were on the lookout for. It didn’t take us long to find them either. They were selling little tacos on the street for 50 cents each! I could only eat 2 of them, but Amelia ate 3 and Nate must have eaten 6! What a piggy! Oink, Oink. I’m just kidding. He’s a lot bigger than we are. We couldn’t really go to the beach quite yet because we got in a little bit too late, so we just went for a walk instead. Can you even believe they actually have a Walmart here? I was shocked! It’s not like I needed anything. After all, Jessie’s Grandma made me a brand
new shirt while we were home. Thanks again Grandma! My last one was getting pretty dirty and I have to admit, it may not have been smelling the best either after wearing it for a full year.
As soon as we woke up the next day Amelia and I just couldn’t help but jump on Nate and Jessie, “Wake up guys! Wake up! Let’s get to the beach!” It didn’t take much effort to get them up for that, but first things first. We needed to find some breakfast. Since Jessie can speak some Spanish, were able to order food at a little local restaurant where the people only spoke Spanish. We got scrambled eggs with rice and beans, as many tortillas as we wanted, and a 1 liter big banana shake that was big enough for the four of us! I think my belly was about to pop after that meal. It was a lot of food. We were happy to be able to ride on Nate and Jessie to the beach. After all, we little monkeys shouldn’t be trying to get through crowds of people. Can you imagine getting stepped on by a giant? No thanks or
no gracias in Spanish. As soon as we could we jumped down into the sand and took off for the water. We could hardly wait to jump in and do a cannon ball into the ocean, but I was in for a little surprise. The water wasn’t nearly as warm here as it was in the Philippines. Brrr! It was a little chilly for little me.
Believe it or not, we actually saw a couple of other monkeys on the street next to the beach. We couldn’t help but feel bad for them though because they were tied up by their owners so people could take pictures of them and make money. They even had a baby lion there! He sure was a cute little guy but none of us were going to take any pictures with him. Plus I didn’t know if he already had dinner or not, and you know how I feel about being on a big cat’s menu. No way! We’d be up in a tree faster than you could say “hot potato.” Speaking of dinner, we were ready to eat by that time and we went to a little place that the guy who
ran our place told us about. They had the best chicken tacos! Yummy! Even just writing about them makes my little mouth water. I tell you what; I could probably eat tacos twice a week if I could. They’re just so good, especially here. The other great thing is that they have some really good hot sauce, which Nate and Jessie both really like. I decided to try one of the really spice ones just a little bit. Guess what happened? I dumped Nate’s water all over my face just to cool my tongue off because it was burning so much! How do you guys eat this stuff? I like spicy, but not THAT spicy. Geez.
With full bellies again we went for a walk to see what kind of things that had for sale in some of the little shops along the street. I saw something I just had to have. They actually had a sombrero that fit me perfectly! Nate and Jessie bought it for me right away and I wouldn’t take it off for the rest of the night. In fact, I even wore it to the beach for the next few days we were here.
You’ll have to take a look at the pictures of me and see if you like it. I tried to get Nate or Jessie to wear a big one but they just looked silly. Since we only had about 4 days here in Playa del Carmen, the time went by pretty quick and soon we were headed towards Belize. Mexico was VERY different from Asia and I could only imagine what Belize would be like. We got up at 4:30 in the morning to catch an early bus out to make it to an island called Caye Caulker the same day. We made it just in time before too much rain came down on us and right before the sun was setting.
I have to tell you, there really wasn’t a whole lot to do here. We thought there was going to be at least some sort of beach to lay on, but there wasn’t too much. It was still neat to see another country even if we were only here for a few days. I had to laugh when I heard some of the people playing Christmas music and you heard, “Let it snow, let it snow, let
it snow.” I hate to tell you guys but it’s NOT going to snow here! Now if you went to where Nate and Jessie are from, you’ll find snow at some point in the winter that’s for sure. One of the best things I saw on this island was a big Spongebob Squarepants figure close to the beach. Now you know I was going to HAVE to get in a picture with my buddy Spongebob. How could I not?
Our time quickly came to an end on the island and soon we were headed back to Belize City where we would take a bus to a little town called San Ignacio. This was pretty much just a little stop for us before making our way to Guatemala, our second country in Central America. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us there!
Still on the road,
Wylie
