The Loire is literally littered with chateaux. We were not wanting to get castle fatigue and decided two might be sufficient to visit. To make the best informed choice we visited Parc de Mini-Chateaux where they have scale (1/25) models of the top 44 chateaux in the area. They were even laid out geographically correct with the Loire and other rivers running through. It was all very well done although in need of a bit of maintenance - like some real life castles I'd suspect. There was a hedge labyrinth which the girls had fun racing around in. So we came away with an agreed list of three. Then ten minutes later we found ourselves queuing for entry tickets to a castle not on the list. Well it had been on the short list prior to ... read more

The anticipation for our first market day experience was high. It is only once a week here on a Friday and we've been waiting all week. We did a smallish shop for the basics at the local supermarket but left most of the fresh stuff for Friday. We even set our alarm to get up quite a few hours earlier than the recent 11am wakenings. We were a bit anxious it might not be on given it was Good Friday but was reassured by all the traffic noise on waking and people scurrying along the streets with their carts and baskets. The range and displays of food were impressive. Especially the seafood and cheeses. Most of the seafood looked like it came straight from the water - huge whole fish, all kinds of shellfish in their ... read more

France life is everything I imagined so far. Wandering off to the bakery for our daily bread and breakfast. Long leisurely meals with great wine. Hot and sunny. Everything shuts down from 12-2.30 so all you can do is lunch and nap. Vendome is a perfectly sized town. It's cute and quaint, easily walkable, a good range of boutique shops (at least a dozen clothes shops I'm happy to shop in). There is an old town with a new town immediately adjacent and our house is right in the middle of both so it's perfect. The house is incredible. It's huge and very antique yet has every modern convenience. Sophia is loving exploring it as there seem to be secret nooks and crannys and passageways and doors everywhere. She keeps discovering new things every day. There ... read more

Another smooth series of flights although tiring - leaving hotel in New York 2pm and arriving Vendome 5pm next day with only an hour or so of sleep snatched in bits. We flew to Paris via London then scary taxi ride to train station for trip to Vendome. I wish I knew French to say "we're not in a hurry". The taxi driver was weaving in and out of the lanes at about 130 kmh expecting the huge trucks to move over and make way. Then through town was scary for pedestrians who dared cross at their crossings. It was lucky I (G) brought a book in Ak as the TV screen did not work, hopefully I will finish this before I return. I had a moment of panic on boarding the Air France flight to Paris ... read more

Last half day in New York was spent finishing off our shopping after our usual American diner breakfast experience. We've done a lot of shopping but are being selective in what we buy (2-3 things each) given we are only in week 1 and have to carry it around for sometime.  Olivia is the exception with her shorts fetish. She already owns more than enough for a different pair every day of the week but I think she is aiming for a different pair for every day we're away. The girls seemed to be happy at the offering at Forever 21 girls clothes store, which we visited 5 or 6 times, for me (G) I lurked around and found my own enjoyment. Had a look in the foyer of Trumps building on 5th Ave and only ... read more

The number and range of shops here is incredible. None of us have had enough of looking at them yet. Today we checked out east village and soho. East village was quite grungy and a little scary.  It was the first time since being here I've noticed dodgy people on the streets.  Being Sunday a lot of businesses were closed with their graffitied roller doors down which didn't help the feel of the place.   Soho was much more upmarket and only a shortish walk away.  The natural history museum was very very impressive starting with the two huge dinosaur skeletons in the foyer before even paying to go in.  Normally displays of stuffed animals would be boring but the realistic settings and poses of the huge range from every continent was enlightening.  It was better ... read more

The crowds, and the large seving sizes are the main memories of New York. Obviously the crowds were expected but it's still hard to get used to. Especially the queuing everywhere - changing rooms in shops, cash registers to pay, entry into shops, and most especially any tourist attractions. The meals are so huge we know now to only order appetizers or sides. Even the entrees are massive. The exception and the best restaurants we've been to are the French and Italian ones.  The distances we've been walking must be close to a half marathon a day. Our muscles are certainly sore by the end of the day. The girls are doing so well keeping up. The footwear of choice for the locals seems to be Ugg boots or gumboots which is quite appropriate given the ... read more

Our second sunny day so we made the most of checking out all the outside stuff. First up was the United Nations as was handy to the hotel. Olivia impressed us with her flag knowledge. We headed up 5th Avenue for more shopping (and more Forever 21), heading for the Guggenheim building which I was happy just to see the outside of. We had lunch in Central Park. Interesting to see all the school sports activities happening here – I guess they don’t have their own grounds. We also saw the Alice in Wonderland statue, Strawberry Fields, and lots of ratty looking squirrels. After lunch we went to the Top of the Rock (observation deck above Rockefeller Centre). It was freezing, but the views were awesome. Was amazing to be able to see where we’d had ... read more

Finally a nice sunny day – all the tulips and daffodils in the streets no longer look out of place! We planned to take the trip to Liberty Island to see the statue close up but couldn’t believe the queues snaking around every path leading to the terminal. There would have been at least 1000 people if not more so we flagged that and headed up the financial district. Wall St was prettier that I expected, a little curvy, and on a slight slope (compared to most streets which are dead flat and dead straight.) We checked out the World Trade Centre site, which is a huge construction site now. But the St Pauls chapel right next to it was quite moving, both for the fact it survived intact – even the little tiny skinny gravestones ... read more

Another cold misty day so we headed to MOMA which I’d been looking forward to for ages. As with most things with high expectations, I was a little disappointed – mainly as not so much really modern stuff. It was still interesting and enjoyable though. I was surprised at the size of Monets water lily painting (bigger than expected) and Warhols Marilyn Munroe (smaller) Most of the day was spent shopping with the highlights for the girls, the M&M shop (Sophia) and Forever 21- Dotti style clothes really cheap. As with most things in America they were huge. M&M shop was 3 floors high, and Forever 21 would have been bigger than the whole of Centre City. Luckily it was open till 1am as we were still shopping after tea. ... read more
