We decided that relaxing in Greece was way too good to give up just yet. So, on Saturday July 31 we set our sights on Corfu. This time we avoided the monotonous, never-ending train ride that would take us to Athens and then to Patras and opted to take the bus, which in Greece is a way better form of transportation, to Igoumenitsa where we caught a ferry to Corfu. The ferry got us there just before dark. Dan stayed at the Pink Palace 5 years ago and said they had a shuttle that would likely be at the ferry port. So after getting off the ferry at the “small” port we trekked to the “big” port to see if we could find that shuttle. To our disappointment there was no shuttle so we found a ... read more

The next bunch of days in Greece were very relaxing. The first day we were there (the one where we arrived so early) we took a nap right away. While we did that Emmy and Litsa went down to the fish market to get the next couple days’ dinners. Dan woke once our hosts had returned (probably sometime around 1000 hrs). Ashley followed not too long after. Dan learned that if you have a fishy smelling fish or a floopy fish, it ain’t a fresh fish. We both learned how to clean fish, but Dan was the only one with enough guts to do it (excuse the terrible pun). For the small fish (Sardines me thinks) it was rather simple. You just pop off the whole head and pull. For the big fish (Mackerel) it was ... read more

We arrived at Anne and Ivan’s building once again. They didn’t even check to see who had buzzed, they must have been expecting us. Not necessarily…the girls were asleep and they didn’t want the phone to wake them. They graciously let us stay with them for the evening. We stayed around the house most of the next day to visit, play with the girls and use the internet. We took a quick bike ride out to the English Gardens for ein Spezi und ein Radler. We got a little lost getting there, but it didn’t really matter; it was just a trip to say that we left the house that day. There was a lot more to see in the gardens so for a relaxing day we suggest to borrow (or hire) some bikes and putz ... read more

So, night train to Venice. Most night trains need reservations; in fact, I think all night trains do. This wasn’t a point lost on us, but due to the loosey-goosey nature of our trip, the possibility of a night train filling to capacity had not fully dawned on us. So if you’ve guessed that the Tuesday night train to Venice was fully booked, quit jumping ahead, it takes a lot of the fun out of telling the story. When we got to the English language ticket counter (how thoughtful, or pandering, I haven’t decided which) we were informed that there were no vacant seats on our preferred date, being that day. Being, as aforementioned, loosey-goosey we were not terribly concerned and inquired as to whether the unavailability was due to German holidays; the ticket agent assured ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Neu-Ulm July 20th 2010

The next week was filled with sightseeing around Bavaria. The first day in Ulm we did an audio guided walking tour of the city. It was very interesting to learn about the city since I didn’t really know anything about it in the first place. For example, Albert Einstein was born in the Jewish quarter of Ulm. We had a weird experience in one of the churches. John the Baptist Church was included on the tour and we decided we wanted to go in and take a look around. As soon as we went through the entrance, a man started speaking to us in German. We told him repeatedly that we don’t speak German but he kept talking to us. We tried to walk away and ignore him but creepily enough he followed us. Needless to ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg (aka Nürnberg) July 14th 2010

On Friday it was time to cross the border into Germany to make our way to the family reunion. It started out like any other train day. We had no idea of the horror ahead. Oh, the horror! We left in the middle of the day and Sem and Truss came to see us off at the train station; although no blood relation exists it really felt like we were leaving family (thanks again Netherlanders). We got on our connection in Hengelo no problem. However, not too far from Hengelo, the train came to a stop at the last station in the Netherlands before the border, causing us to miss our desired connection (fortunately it was an hourly train). Meanwhile, it is a blazing hot day, so we’re thinking “at least there’s air conditioning”. However, as ... read more

Oh wow, can’t believe how far behind we are. Oh well, only one way to catch up. Saturday the third of July - this was the day the four of us hired bikes. We left it until about 1100hrs, not doing much before then. It is definitely the way to go when getting around the Netherlands. We rode around town, out of town, and across town to Dan’s Great-Aunt & Uncle; Marie & Paul. As always when navigating such old towns, the questions of direction and the correct winding road were constantly on our minds. Once we arrived at Paul & Marie’s we had a little difficulty contacting them on the intercom. Just as we were about to leave another couple from the building let us in. We rode the elevator with them and proceeded to ... read more

Our flights were uneventful. We flew from Calgary to Halifax where we had a lobster dinner; market price in the airport was higher than we wanted to pay, but how often do we get lobster?? We also bought a wrap to eat along the way. Food was a must since you don’t get any when you take 3 four hour flights. We boarded the Iceland Air flight to Reykavik. Both Dan and Ashley wrote in their journals but Dan also found time to take a nap (What a slacker). We were really hoping to see more of Iceland from the sky but there were too many clouds. Once we got below the cloud line we could see some of the terrain. It’s so different from Canada where all you see is squares and straight lines. Iceland ... read more

Well, just a few days to catch up on. Sorry if I type a little slow, I'm (Dan) back on the Dvorak keyboard; I'll master it yet. Anyhowways, about those couple days to catch up on, the 21st is where we last left off, and it went a little something like this... We stayed with Ashley's family since Dan's had company already. On the 21st though we did go to Vernon to go for a bike ride, the Kettle Valley Trestle trail. It goes over eighteen old train trestles that were finished back in 1914, burnt up in the Kelowna fires of 2003, and rebuilt by a small army of volunteers. The trail was a little over 10km and looked like it declined from where we started but once we were riding the slope was unperceivable. ... read more

Well, we've left the city of Edmonton, long time home (for one of us; tears were shed). We left a little later than planned (1700hrs instead of 1200hrs); but neither of us wanted to wimp out so we headed to BC anyways. After hours of night driving (intermittent snoozing, extended by Nap Sac's (thanks Pratt & Co.)) and a stop at Tim Hortons for iced caps we showed up in Armstrong in the wee hours of the morning (0600hrs) to visit family. Welcomed by the only awake occupants, the bernese mountain dogs, we crept into the house to get ready for bed. Low and behold who should awake but little Cindy-Lou Who (or a close approximation). Ashley's little cousin was the first to wake up and welcome us with hugs and smiles (must have been a ... read more
