Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Inverness-shire » Isle of Skye October 11th 2010

On October 10 we realized that we both had the next 2 days off. So, it was time to do something about it; get out of Inverness and explore Scotland. After all, that's what we're here for. Ashley had been to the Isle of Skye on her previous visit and decided it was a must-see for Dan. The next day we rented a car and headed for Skye. After a couple hours it occurred to us that we were pretty hungry and needed lunch, pronto. We pulled off the road into a restaurant parking lot only to find the restaurant was closed indefinitely. There were signs pointing to other small towns off the main road where we thought there may be a local watering hole with some grub. Unfortunately for us we missed the turnoff for ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Inverness-shire » Fort William September 25th 2010

Well, we both had jobs and a place to stay so it was time to do some sightseeing. Seeing as it was Dan's birthday weekend we decided to head somewhere special; down to Fort William and to visit the Cameron Clan museum that was close to there. We hired a car to get down there since it would have been tricky to get around the area by bus. We had some trouble getting our car since we accidentally booked it for October. After going to the hotel where we were supposed to do the pick-up and no one being there, we called and had to go to the airport. It took us a bus ride to get out there, but from there on it was pretty easy. We waited in line, and the staff were very ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom September 17th 2010

Wow, I'm sure word of mouth moves faster than we do. Lots to catch up on, but since we've settled it feels like week after week is same ol' same ol'. Well, here goes. We arrived into London at St. Pancras station around noon on August 31st. After checking out a map and figuring out where the hostel we booked was we decided to huff it. Unfortunately our time in London was very 'work' oriented. Since it was the end of our planned two month vacation we spent the next couple days looking at where we'd like to spend our time in the UK and working on our CVs. We were there on a day between orientations so we decided that our first day we could find SWAPs sister company. We worked on CVs, had a ... read more

Europe » France » Paris August 31st 2010

We made it to Paris! When we found out the Thalys ticket agents were on strike we asked the conductors on the platform if we could board the train and pay for the ticket on board. Understanding our dilemma they seemed to think it would fine. So we got on the train. When the ticket checkers came we had to explain why we didn’t have tickets; thankfully it was only 26 euros. Normally, anyone who boards the train without a ticket has to pay 88 euros! Unbelievable; we are so happy we didn’t have to pay that. Otherwise our trip was very uneventful. We arrived at Gard du Nord which didn’t give Ashley the best first impression of the city. It’s very chaotic with lots of kiosks, people shouting and car horns blaring. However, that night ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels August 26th 2010

We made it to Brussels, by the skin of our teeth might I add. We arrived at the Luxemburg train station with 20 minutes to spare before our train to Brussels was scheduled to leave. However, we still needed food for our journey and Dan volunteered to go find some for us. The train to Brussels came in 10 minutes early and everyone else piled onto the train. So there was Ashley all alone waiting on the platform with all the luggage (2 big backpacks and 2 small daypacks) wondering if Dan was going to make it back on time. Then Ashley spotted Dan running down the platform, his hands full of food, with only a minute to spare. On shear will alone, Ashley grabbed all 4 bags (she’s still not sure how she did it) ... read more

Europe » Luxembourg » Luxembourg City August 23rd 2010

Well, off to Luxemburg we were. That tiny little country that has to share a Eurail Pass with the Netherlands and Belgium. What is there to do in Luxemburg you ask?? We were wondering the same thing. Rolling into the City (there is only one according to the locals) was one of the most amazing first impressions of a city Dan has ever had. The train crossed the river valley before it would reach the station, the green space below you with the steep sides just seemed so amazing; you couldn't tell you were in a city at all. After the train, first things first... what to do in Luxemburg?? We went straight to information where we learned about the Luxemburg attraction card, which would get us into sights all over the country!!! We didn't dare ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Andernach August 20th 2010

We left Hamburg the morning of the 16th for Andernach, home of Dan's great-aunt Traudie and husband Wolfgang. Our train for some reason kept getting later and later. By the time we reached Koln we were thirty minutes late and our train to Andernach had left the same platform as the one from Hamburg pulled into. Oh well, Wolfgang phoned and got our new times. A ride was waiting for us when we reached the Andernach banhof. We headed to Traudie and Wolfgang's house for a quick lunch (despite it being 1530 hrs), then headed out to have tea with Ruth and Theo. It was good to see Theo since he hadn't made it to the familien treffen, and it was nice to see Dan's great aunt Ruth's house; just a little more family history. Since ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hamburg » Hamburg August 17th 2010

Hans-Juergen came to pick us up at the train station once we arrived in Hamburg. We took a walk down by the Alster, which is where the drink Alster Wasser (beer mixed with lemonade) gets its name. We went down into the Rathaus Passage, which is an underground passage that has been converted into a bookstore and café. Apparently this area used to be teaming with homeless drug addicts and a friend of Hans-Juergen’s had the idea to turn the passage into a business area. We continued on our walk for another hour or so going down the main shopping street and stopping for sausages and sight-seeing. Well, we didn’t do a lot of sight-seeing but Hans-Juergen showed us the Church of San Jakobi. We learned that San Jakobi is the patron saint of pilgrimage so ... read more

Europe » Germany » Lower Saxony » Bersenbruck August 14th 2010

After all that traveling around Greece and Switzerland we returned to Germany to visit more family. The visiting was preceded by a day of rest in Frankfurt where we relaxed and exerted ourselves only for a leisurely 3 hour walk. We celebrated our anniversary by going out for dinner at a Greek/Italian restaurant and it was delicious. However, it was also accompanied by a dog humping Ashley's arm. That's right! You may think "what was a dog doing in a restaurant?" but unlike Canada dogs are more welcome than children and this one seemed to belong to the owner or an employee. As soon as we entered the restaurant it took a liking to Ashley and of course she couldn't resist petting it which made him like her even more and he kept coming back for ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Zermatt August 8th 2010

On August 5 we left Corfu. We took the shuttle to the ferry port, waited for the next ferry to Igoumenitsa where we caught an overnight ferry to Ancona, Italy. Now this ferry was huge. I don’t remember if we mentioned Dan’s disappointment in the size of our last ferry. But he had previously been on a cruise-like ship and this most recent boat didn't meet his standards. However, this ship did. It had a swimming pool, several lounges and dining areas and more. We set up camp in one of the lounges where we hung out most of the night, watched movies and eventually fell asleep. We thought it would be great to go to Zermatt in Switzerland. So we took a train from Ancona to Milan where we got on another train to Brig. ... read more
