Iceland is famous for its waterfalls so we thought we’d give them a red hot (more on that later) go in one day (other than yesterday’s taster at Gulfoss). Packed up and bade our farewells to Depill and the pregnant mares before hitting the road headed to Seljalandsfoss, famous because of it’s beauty and because you can walk right underneath it, and get a little wet. What the guidebooks fail to mention is that it’s also the ideal place to get stuck halfway up a wet, cold, muddy and slippery rock face because your 13 year old confidence exceeds your ability and foresight, which appeared to run out about half way up. Mother to the rescue! Dried out and warmed up (and calmed down) in the sun before caving at the continual demands for lunch. But ... read more

The day was filled with anticipation of snowmobiling on a glacier. After using this as incentive to drag them away from the horses and dog, there was a little feedback and accompanying moaning heard when we discovered that our tour had been pushed back a few hours. No matter, this gave us the chance to explore some of the other local hot spots…literally. First stop was actually not hot but wet - Gulfoss, translated as Golden Falls. Not quite golden but large and damp, and a sight to see nonetheless. Next stop, Geysir geothermal area, for some boiling water and mud and a spewing geyser, Strokkur, who belches forth approx 20m in the air every 8-10 minutes, or more frequently if you’re not paying attention. Very cool to see, particularly the water drop back down the ... read more

So we’ve tired of the rolling hills and verdant greenness (yes, that’s a word) of England, and we’ve decided to try something different. So different, in fact, that we had to get up at 3.30am just to manage the excitement and anticipation. Pleasantly surprised with easyjet’s delivery and promptness, we had landed in Iceland by 7.30 local time and we’re on our way…back on the wrong side of the road. Quick refuel at a bakery and headed straight to the recent Fagradalsfjall volcano eruption. While we missed the actual eruption by a few months, we were pretty excited to see the steam pouring out of the recent lava. Very cool (yes, ok, or hot) that we could walk right up to it and our budding geologist was fascinated by the ‘souvenirs’ she found along the way. ... read more

Some science and some arts to round out our English experience. First, the arts. A tour of the globe theatre for those of us who have an ‘appreciation of Shakespeare’…or those who’ve done one term of midsummer night’s dream. We were disappointed to miss the season of The Globe but we managed to catch the final dress rehearsals for Much Ado About Nothing on our tour, which was really special. We weren’t allowed to take photos of the set/actors but picked up some really interesting stuff about actors and plays of the time, including the origins of the actor’s ‘role’ and why so much of Shakespeare explains what the actors are doing. A really engaging and interesting tour before a great pub lunch overlooking the Thames. And now for the science. I’m told there was a ... read more

Another bucket-list item checked off the list for (some members of) our family. Sadly it also appeared to be on the bucket list of many other families, even though it was the first official day back at school after Easter. No matter, queued up for some rides we really wanted - Ninjago, which was a 3D VR experience which worked the biceps, and Pirate Falls. To say ‘we’ really wanted pirate falls is probably an overstatement given the stress and connipting going on in the seat behind me at the arsenic, nay water, that was going to rain down upon us. Surprisingly, we survived the acid rain to visit Miniland and spend all our hard-earned coins in the shop. ... read more

After a hectic few days of pottering about (ha, get it?!) we have used the last few days to enjoy some relaxing in the sun. The kids all headed for Go Ape for some cousin bonding in the trees. Despite the dire predictions of ‘freaking out’, I’m told a good time was had by all…except Beeb who ‘came last’ on the zipline…I’m told it was weight-related rather than skill. I enjoyed a lovely brunch with my former work colleague Nicola and some shopping before heading home for an afternoon bbq in the garden (had to buy some more climate-appropriate clothing). Lovely to catch up and see everyone and enjoy some sun in the garden, and a fire with marshmallows. Next day was a very lazy start followed by a picnic and some cricket/rounders in the park. ... read more

The much-anticipated day had FINALLY arrived. Sleep was in short supply overnight and the day eventually dawned. How were we going to wait until 4.00 to embark on this life-changing adventure?!? How could we ensure the excitement, the anticipation and the overwhelming jitteriness?! We had a grand solution - depart for Arundel Castle and leave her at home with Aunty Mel and Charlotte! Winning!! So off we set towards the castle and the medieval festival. Lots to see at the castle, as indicated by the massive number of people in the car park. Luckily there were plenty of activities scattered amongst the grounds to keep everyone occupied so it never felt particularly crowded. First stop was a mock battle, followed by the gardens, full of beautiful flowers. A quick visit to the castle keep (but not ... read more

A mix of the old and the new over the last few days - the traditional and the modern. Kicked off with a visit to Queenie and the changing of the guards. Bit of pomp and ceremony framed by lovely flowers…and decorated by the arrival of Charlotte to meet us. Beautiful stroll through St James Park before we split up - Mel, Eloise and Charlotte to the Harry Potter walking tour and us to the Tower of London. I’m not sure who was more educated - the Harry Potter tour guide or the Tower visitors. By all reports, a good time was had by all on the tour, even if no one else could get a word in. The Tower visit was great - we’ll set up audio guides tailored to kids and adults but following ... read more

Today’s objective was to not repeat our visit to Chessington of 15 years ago. Charlotte’s enthusiasm for the Dragon’s Fury roller coaster was dampened significantly on the way up, with the chant of ‘I want to get off, I want to get off!’ echoing around the park. No such issue for Eloise who spent a large portion of the time in the hour plus long queue wanting to get on. Lucky it was worth the wait! Beeb had a lovely time feeding the bevy of Humboldt Penguins - a whole bucket of fish to get through and her assumed pace of eating made for a long VIP experience but she loved every minute! All of them had sweet individual personalities and it was fun getting to know them a little bit. The day was rounded out ... read more
