Today provided some stark contrasts in colour - the deep vibrant red of the rocks surrounding Sedona against the bright clean white of the foot of snow just up the road at Oak Creek. First stop was Fay Canyon, a short walk through the forest, punctuated by small patches of snow and ice crystals on surrounding rocks, while being overshadowed by enormous sheer cliffs of red and cream on either side. A short scramble up some rocks (five wheel drive required on descent) into the guts of the canyon to overlook the valley below. Next stop Boynton Canyon - we’d been warned that the canyon walk itself was impassable due to snow and ice (and possibly our laziness) so we opted for the shorter steeper overlook trail. And we were not disappointed! A beautiful climb to ... read more

Hmm, not overly sure I’m a fan of this ‘under your own steam’ caper we’ve got going on here. I quite liked the sitting on a horse and letting someone else do all the work! Nonetheless, here we are in Sedona, ready to check out the stunning rock formations that surround the whole area. Naturally, the girls have been overwhelmed with our enthusiasm for the natural surrounds...oh wow, look at those rocks...we’ve warned them to expect that a lot over the next few days. Who isn’t enthralled by the riveting tales of Geology 101?! First stop was Cathedral Rock where we clambered up some red rock formations (me only part way) to enjoy some stunning views. Some were more interested in the morning tea on offer. Next stop was the Mescal Trail towards Devil’s Bridge. A ... read more

Today saw a departure...from the horses and goats (cue tears and long faces from children) and a mountain of food (cue tears and long faces from parents) as we left Stagecoach Trails and headed to Sedona. Quite a significant change of countryside, as stony, sandy desert gave way to more vegetation and hills. This also meant that we were greeted with an unexpected coating of snow - very pretty and atmospheric as we drove through Williams to Bearizona, home to bears (hence the name) and jaguars (as yet undiscovered by the resident biologist in the back seat, for the sake of sanity of all participants). Alas, the map rapidly divulged this not-so-hidden gem, and the drive-through area, containing wolves, bears, bison and many deer things with sticks, was virtually ignored in the desperation to reach the ... read more

What a magnificent three days we’ve had at the horse ranch. Before we arrived, we were asked how much we weighed so that they could match us up with the right horse...I think departure weight significantly exceeds that number!! Geoff and I have been surprised how much we’ve enjoyed the riding. Yesterday arvo, we went to the Quartz Vein, a strange outcrop of white rocks. We had to ride over a number of river beds, down and over and up, down and over and up. The down momentum even propelled John into a trot quite a few times. Emma was quite keen to run on all the down (to ensure she had enough momentum to propel me and my gut up the other side) but I was not too keen on that! Despite the desert appearing ... read more

Complete change of temperature and scenery now...we’ve moved from the wet, hilly, green, snowy vistas of the north east to the brown, sparse desert expanse of Arizona. Arrived here via an early morning start from Boston (to just catch the last of the hard-core New Year’s revellers) to Vegas, where we made a hasty exit (well, at least we tried). We have acquired a new tank-like vehicle to navigate our way around the south. First stop was Oatman to check out the resident burros. Next, after a long drive through some very empty space, we arrived at Stagecoach Trails Guest Ranch, our home for the next few days. Introductions all round (goats, horses, wranglers) before a hearty meal and a much-needed sleep. The following few days have been filled with eating and relaxation, punctuated by the ... read more

Thankfully the day dawned slightly less arctic and wet than previous and we felt confident that the New Year’s celebrations would go ahead. Geoff headed to Samuel Adams for his morning mash beer tasting and the girls and I took it easy at home. After yet another turkey meal (sadly not the last), we braved the weather and wandered to the Common. It seems that word had spread from Central Park and we were greeted by many squirrels. Thankfully they had also heard of my love of a boneyard, so hung in there to keep the younger participants occupied while I meandered through the headstones. A quick visit to Copley Square revealed that yesterday’s weather had delayed the ice sculptures so we retreated to a cafe for some warming snacks. Some more squirrel time, this time ... read more

And we saw a few! Wet dogs that is...only precious few souls braving this truly ridiculous weather. When we were on the interstate, there were signs up warning a ‘winter weather advisory’ - storms, wind, ice...’a wintry mix’ so my weather app told me. Apparently a wintry mix in Boston is rain mixed with sleet, mixed with horizontal rain and sleet mixed with wind whipping your legs so it feels like -9 (so says my app) until you can’t actually feel your legs at all! But bugger that, we’ve a city to explore! I will admit to a slightly slower start than normal and a sternly issued warning that it was raining yes, and it was cold, yes, but I was NOT GOING TO LISTEN TO WHINGING. So, a quick fire visit to Boston Common (wet ... read more

Had an early start today, in contrast to our customary 10.00 lie in of the last few days. Our destination was still a surprise for Beeb, which we had code-named ‘making gingerbread’. So she was quite surprised when we turned up in an empty field with some ruined buildings. The surprise could last no longer as we headed towards a couple of Harris Hawks tethered to perches in the field. We had arrived at New England Falconry. After a quick rundown on the behaviour of the birds and the history of falconry, we took to the field to practise this craft. The girls were given a glove and shown what to do, and as if it had been trained to do so, the hawk flew from the tree to their glove, sat there for a while ... read more

North America » United States » Vermont » Woodstock December 28th 2019

Sadly our time in Vermont is ending tomorrow as we head to Boston. We have absolutely loved it here - the people are friendly and accommodating, the food is great and it’s a beautiful place. The last few days have been filled with relaxing, eating and playing in the snow. For many people, when your seven year old is lying flat on her back in the snow, after careening down an icy hill on a sled, having head-butted the slope, crying and claiming that she “can’t move my legs”, it would be cause for some concern. Luckily Genevieve has given us much experience of her self injury assessment process, and in reality, it was nothing a bit of lunch and a lie on the couch didn’t fix (oh, and surgery to reconnect her spinal cord). We always said we were coming to Vermont to eat (us) and play in the snow (them), and so far, it hasn’t disappointed on either account. Had to haul arse from our hotel in Midtown to Mecca (also known as Grand Central Station to those not in the transport way) which was about as much exercise as I had intended for the week. Train trip to Stamford was efficient and easy, as was car pick up and journey onto the Interstate, and before we knew it, we were paying homage at that most American of institutions, the road-side Maccas stop. Some were more reverent than others. Unfortunately it seemed much of the country was also making pilgrimages, and we encountered quite a bit of traffic. But as we headed further north, and more and more snow ... read more
