Well, I did promise that I'd put up the second half of the week of wanderings at a less lazy time, and any time after two cups of coffee and possibly a gallon of tea is certainly that. This is going to be long, so bear with me here. Never mind anything else I might be doing at the time, no! To hell with that. Anyways, the second wing of the trip was going to be spent in Wien, and after another four hour trip in a swaying metal box (I've been told to call them trains), we arrived. In what was simultaneously a happy surprise and a surreal moment, my lodging in Vienna wasn't in a hostel, oh no, no living with six other people in the same room for me! No sir! Mumbling about München

Oh look, I'm back here again. It's a little comforting in some ways knowing I've got a nice perch on top of a suburban building to return home to at the end of my travels, it's cathartic in some ways. Well, regardless, the past week was spent in München and Wien (these'll be in English further in) as part of a school excursion, and to avoid the near fatal "Wall O'Text" syndrome that would result from telling the whole week in one post, I'm going to split it into two. I get to compartmentalize my writing, and no one reading this gets a tumor from looking at their screen for too long. So let's see...Munich seems like the ideal place to start, and I'll periodically add in some more of "Dan's lessons for poor solo ... read more

An Idle Moment in Germany

Well now let me see, it's been a somewhat travel free weekend, but I'll give some thought into updating before I return to paper writing hell. I think the topic for this weekend has to be, well, a very strange experience. I'd spent some of my time on my weekend hanging out with Nick and Mitchel, a pair of Australians I'd met in Krakow, which did mean a chance to see another part of the city at least, but it was mostly a non starter due to a communications fail. However, Sunday turned out into a downright surreal experience. My host parents were visiting an old friend of the family, an artist named Heinrich putting on an exhibition so I decided to tag along. It was a nice change of pace, and after spending some ... read more

Oh Krakow.

Well, let's see, I'm fairly certain I meant to actually update this blog last week, and the site seems equally determined to tell me I never got around to that. Well bugger. I'm sure it wasn't going to be anything special, I think the best I could've mustered was the Ulysses of blog posts, but who'd want to read that? Regardless, I'm back in my little abode in Kleimachnow after a brief vacation to Krakow, Poland. First off, let me say that it was awesome, but I think the best way to do this is to break down the experience into some learning exercises. See, Krakow was something of a dry run for the winter month I've got in front of me, so I'll post these and hope that's enough. Mistakes were made, and some ... read more

Ugh. Well so much for updating every week, but hey, eight days is close enough right? Bah. Well anyhoo, I've a fair amount to get too, so let's get right into it! Have a nice weekend? I hope so. What'd I do? Not much, oh you know. Nothing special just... OKTOBERFEST. Needless to say the world's largest keg party is pretty much the topic for the week. A little history: Oktoberfest was originally supposed to be a once off festival celebrating the mighty Bayern König Something-Or-Other's marriage to Königin What's-Her-Name, but the locals decided (in a very Bayern way) that the party had been such a grand time they should keep it up. Anyways, visiting Germany this was definitely something a good chunk of us FU-Besters were rather excited about, and I ended up booking ... read more

Berlin du kannst so schön sein

Well now let me see. Only a week since the last blog post and I'm back here already? alright, I'll take that, it counts as a vague step forward towards productivity. Ironically though, writing this is probably coming at the cost of something approaching actual productivity, seeing as the small (and rather angry) mountain of homework staring me down is being postponed for this. Ah well. Priorities. Welcome back shockingly enough! Berlin's the weird gift that keeps on giving, so I think my theme for the week is going to be the city itself. A lot of this is going to be weirdly reflective and probably cover a lot of random moments. As I've said before, Berlin's huge. At this point I've been through most of the downtown, and yet I'm certain I've only scratched ... read more

Hm. It seems to me a made a promise a while back that I'd update the world about my comings and goings in Germany. Seems like a grand idea, I wonder what happened to...oh wait, that's right, I've been pretty lazy recently. Well anyways, this marks the first attempt to really rectify that. Since it's been closing in on two weeks since the last one of these that I put up (and that was truncated anyhow), I've got plenty to say, but in the interest of my readers, let's keep it to 750 words or so a day. Right, so, short answer? Life in Germany's been pretty good, and thus far one of the weirdest experiences of my life. Right, well, that's it. I'm going to nip off and have a coffee. What? Ethics? Bullshit, ... read more

What? You mean I'm not really on vacation? Blog? I don't ever remember agreeing to that. Bah, fine fine. Anyways, hello everyone! It's been about a week since I arrived in Berlin, and in the interest of making space in my memory banks it's time for my first stab at a blog entry! I'll preface a couple of things here, I don't have an editor, so expect some rambling tangents, and if some of the juicier bits are omitted, well, just ask me later. So anyways, where're we starting here? Ah yes. After the usual mess with customs and entering the country I started things off on the right foot by promptly getting lost. And it's been starting off so well too, I got to the right...general area of the city (Alexanderplatz) and then promptly ... read more
