I'm currently at Student at American University, and I'm residing in Berlin for a semester, followed by a second in Brussels. In the event of a zombie apocalypse or similar catastrophe I like to think this will illuminate the beer soaked journey that is my life prior to the disaster for all to read. It might even be funny.

Oh lord. It can’t really be late July can it? Well apparently time slows for no man, least of all a hapless twenty-something college student. As my memory isn’t getting any better, it’s probably best if I try to tie things up with the blog. There may be one or two more entries after this, depending on how motivated I’m feeling. Life has gone on, I attended a wedding, actually visited a national park in the States, and wasted an awful lot of time demeaning myself for cash tips (no, I’m not a stripper). Digesting that in the broader context of life spent traveling there and back again will have to come later, for now let’s chat Barcelona. Welcome to Barcelona! Let's not beat around here, the city's wonderful. I’d caught a train from Madrid, so ... read more

Lordy, how time flies sometimes. Mostly when you’re having fun, occasionally, like now, when you’re just too damn busy to notice. It’s been more than a month since I finally caved in and acknowledged my financial ruin, which would go a long way towards explaining why I’m back in my old hometown near Boston. Still, while I may be trapped in a suit and serving time in Cubicle hell let me cast my thoughts back to a month ago and I’ll tidy things up from my time abroad. There will be one more entry after this, probably in another month or so, or whenever I think I’ve had long enough to think about everything. In the meantime, when last we left our hapless hero: Welcome back to Madrid! So after our little whirlwind tour my family ... read more

Spending time in Spain

I wonder what would happen if I ever took the time to analyze when I actually write these blogs. If I had to hazard a guess I would probably say they always come out when I'm busiest and my attention is desperately needed elsewhere. In short, it's a damn good thing I don't plan on being a nuclear safety technician someday, but also that if I'm starting this now something stressful must be down the road. In this case, I just accepted a second job, and I'm leaving for my first visit to my home in Washington D.C for the first time in a year, but worries for another time. In the mean time, and more interesting by far is my continued nostalgia trip and a rehashing of my time in Spain! For the record, this ... read more

Well it's a lazy Sunday afternoon, and I'm safely back in my quiet little neck of western Suburbistan near Boston. As it's now a month overdue (I regret nothing), and my only other thing worth doing is a tax return, I think it's time I tidied up the story of our little trip through the Balkans. As a final sidenote, I think my backlog's at like...four entries left, including this one. How soon they're finished depends on a lot of things, mostly since I wrote the last ones under periods of great stress/sometimes drunk I'll probably wait until that happens again (read: after I'm employed). Right, so Kosovo. Welcome to Kosovo! Hope you weren't fond of those kidneys! So I guess it's fair to say landing in Pristina's airport (via steep dive and prop plane) it ... read more

What? I'm here again? Rubbish, I'm never this productive. Oh wait, technically my brain is calling this procrastinating. After all, I don't really have to worry about my open suitcase, lack of a ticket, or a million other oddities if I'm doing that updating thing right? Much less any of the emotional side of these things. That's what the beer's for. Well if I'm going to do this, I'm going to do it right, let's move onto Croatia. Croatia: Notice how much time I spent back in that last entry focusing mostly on the everyday goingson in Serbia? Well I hope that adds as a little bit of balance for what starts here. After all, who I met were mostly college age students, maybe a few years older than me, but never by enough to have ... read more

Belgrade and Serbia, this is new.

There's a very ancient saying, going back hundreds of years, "oh bugger". It seems I've got a final in a few hours, which would normally be fine, but I'm crippled by a tragically fatal set of problems, which have a lot to do with packing and finally leaving Europe. In the mean time I'm going to do something that needs to happen. Study for that exam? Hell no! Continue updating from the Balkans: Serbia, or, new ground: Well alright then, we’re finally out of the leg of the woods where I bored just about everyone under the sun by noting that I’d been here before, and we entered the Balkans proper. Our actual part of this trip’s kind of funny in its own way. Mind you, the bus we were on was already bound for crazy ... read more

Oh dear god. You know that feeling when you return refreshed and relaxed from a nice long vacation, only to come back to an inbox thirty feet high and a shrill tremulous voice telling you how much needs doing? Well that's kind of where we're at right now. Fortunately, most of the stuff in question is this kind, the kind of mental bookkeeping that ensures when my memory turns to pinkish goo I'll have something to remind me of what I did and where (at least most of it). Course part of it's also jobs, sorting out my social life and class schedules, figuring out what I want to do with my life, and possibly distilling an elixer of eternal life if there's time leftover. Still, the trip was great fun. (Un)fortunately, Jerry Sheridan (our fearless ... read more

Well it's been a few weeks since I updated this, and mercifully, Robbie's much better at uploading Fotos than I am, so now I've got about a million pictures to pull on for this update. Anyways, the past few weeks have been idly spent in Belgium, which is mercifully less interesting, and therefore less taxing on my writing skills. Short answer? I wrote a paper, and slept in sunlight for a weeks, it's been pretty good. So after Bulgaria, what happened (I know you're all keen to ? Well: Welcome to Romania! Say goodbye to your passport! Romania and Bulgaria rest outside the Schengen zone, and are accorded a special status in the EU slightly higher than "leper" but this meant we had to actually get our passes stamped when we crossed the Danube by train. ... read more

Well it's something like 10 PM, and I'm hard at work trying to avoid writing a research paper that really needs starting. Still, when something's a week a way, it is so, very, hard to care. Ah well, I'm sure I'll think of some way to make the-company-which-must-not-be-named exciting. Let's back up a bit though shall we? Bulgaria for a start really was awesome, Romania maybe just a tad less so, but we'll get there. The trip was done with three others, a first for me, Robbie, Aubrey, and my old roomate Matus. For Bulgaria I think I can say this. Welcome to Eastern Europe: As Matus occasionally commented, Bulgaria resembled more of central Europe ten years ago, it’s just a little further east (duh). Orthodox churches dot the area, though with not as much frequency ... read more

Well it's about 10:30 and I'm already fending off sleep, the future, and a wide and angry variety of homework assignments all jockeying for my attention, so it must be time for the blog! First off, hello there, I'm safely back in Brussels after a weeklong trip to Bulgaria and Romania. Expect the entries on those in the next few days (no, really, one of them's written already. Crazy notion I know), but I'm going to take a moment to back up. Life got away from me just a bit, and the week before this trip into the slightly wilder part of Europe my entire program took a trip south into the Ardennes, Germany, and Alsace. Aside from boarding the bus ride from hell, the trip itself was a lot of fun, and in the interest ... read more
