The plan this morning was to be up by 7am and out by 7.30am. Unfortunately I woke with a splitting headache which delayed us slightly. I think I am finding the heat and humidity a bit much! We leave at 9am and already it is hot, though not quite as bad as yesterday afternoon. We take an Uber to Le Faro, a lighthouse on a rocky outcrop at the end of the bay. Our car takes us as far as he can go and from there it is walking only, up to the top. The path takes us beside a sewage plant which stinks - not a good start! We follow a gravel track which twists and winds it’s way (hopefully) up to the top. We meet a lot of people coming down but no-one going ... read more

Check out at this hotel is at 10am - rather early but our bus is at 11am so not too inconvenient. Today’s bus is starting at our pick up point so we assume it won’t be late - I hope that’s not famous last words! I had a reasonable nights sleep but Ian reports that his bed was lumpy. :-( We are down in reception at 9.45am ready to check out. Given the place that we are, we have planned to walk to the bus station with the vague hope of flagging down a taxi on the way. We know there is no hope of flagging one down outside our hotel. The bus station is only four blocks away (10 minutes walk according to google) but the wheel on Ian’s bag is in a delicate state ... read more

This morning I am awake at 6.30am - I think it’s something to do with paranoia about missing buses. I also want to try to catch my parents before we leave! The room is a little chilly and the shower is cold - not a good start! Now I go next door to the Circle K shop which is supposed to open at 7am to get our coffees - the shutters are still down! Back inside the hotel I notice that they have do-it-yourself instant coffee and herbal teas so I help myself liberally. Back in the room Ian is doing the last of the packing and I make my Skype call. Mum and Dad are both fine and they have warm sunshine - sounds like they have better weather than us! Dad has tried rolling ... read more

So this morning we have decided to be a bit more adventurous. We are taking the local bus to Guadalupe...pronounced Guh-wad-a-loop-eh, not Gwad-a-loop, very useful to know when asking for the bus. We make our way to the place we ‘think’ the bus departs, crossing over the dual carriageway via a handy concrete walkway. It’s actually quite chilly this morning and the mist is hanging thick over the hill top. You can tell who the farang tourists are...the idiots in short sleeve tops - all the locals are wrapped up in thick woolies and anoraks! It’s 8am and we have found the bus stop with reasonable ease after a 10 minute walk from our hotel to the edge of town. The first bus we attempt to board is not the right one, but the driver admirably ... read more

Today we sleep in late - that’s the trouble with these rooms without a real window! I must have been tired as I completely slept through the sound of the cathedral bells though Ian reports a disturbed night. Our first task today is to take our washing to the laundry. The one nearest to us has only two reviews and one of them says the woman who runs it is rude and loses half your stuff! There is another one just up the road and it’s on the way to the teleferic (cable car) - it has no reviews but we decide to take our chances. We arrive at 9.30am to find its doors firmly bolted. It’s Monday, so is that closing day or are we just too early? Armed with google translate I enter the ... read more

Today is a move on day. I sleep late after a disturbed night. I can only put this down to it being a Saturday night in the city! There seemed to be revellers driving past with blaring music and, what sounded like, wild dogs barking ferociously all night...and we are at the back of the building! I don’t think I fell asleep until around 3am! Anyway, there is no rush as breakfast is served later on Sundays and our bus does not leave until noon. We have a leisurely breakfast, make a couple of phone calls back home and buy a couple of bits for lunch as we will be travelling for six hours today and we are not sure what (if anything) will be provided by the bus company! We order our Uber, standing at ... read more

Today we are visiting Ex Hacienda San Gabriel de Barras. This 17th century hacienda belonged, unsurprisingly, to San Gabriel de Barras! It would be the easiest thing in the world to order an Uber but we decide that we’ll give the local bus a try. It is only 2.5km out of town and the walk into town will do us good. There are not too many people around and the walk into the centre is pleasant, then we walk back to the west of the town to suss out the bus. We need to choose any bus heading to Marfil and ask for Hotel Mision. We try one bus but the driver seems to be saying no, it’s not this one. To be honest we give up fairly quickly and decide to order an Uber. But ... read more

We’ve had a really good nights sleep. The bonus of being in a place on the outskirts is that it’s not quite so noisy! We go down for breakfast which is good self service - cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt and freshly baked sticky buns (too tempting to resist I fear). We set off into town - we know the way now! There is some kind of a procession about to begin which means that all traffic has been prevented from entering the streets. This is a great bonus as we are ahead of the procession but walking on nice clear streets. We begin our walking tour at the opera house and the church of San Diego. From here we cut through the Jardin de la Union, a plaza shaded by shaded laurel trees with a bandstand ... read more

Today is a move on day. We make a Skype call to mum and dad whilst we are still assured of reasonable WiFi connection! The truth is, the hotel WiFi (which was pretty weak anyway), completely failed a few days ago. But as we passed their main WiFi modem every day on the stairs, we could clearly see their private modem...so we sneakily photographed the password and have been having excellent reception ever since! Unbelievably there is yet another celebratory procession passing our balcony today. Now we know why they have named this town Mexico’s own Disneyland! Today the focus seems to be on little children...three large cartoon type characters, followed by lots of toddlers - the smallest riding in the back of floats and slightly older kids accompanied by proud parents walking behind. We decide ... read more

Today we are back up at ‘the bronze bull’ waiting to be picked up for our tour of Canada de la Virgen. We are on the 9am bus and today it arrives with no problem. There are 10 of us on the tour so quite a small group. Within the hour we are at the site and Albert Coffee is there to greet us. Albert is a real character. He is from Louisiana but has lived here for many years, having graduated as an archaeologist and also having been part of the original excavation team that worked on this site. Needless to say, he is an expect on his subject, and talks with amazing speed practically without pausing for breath. He really wishes that he was allowed longer for each tour but as he has a ... read more
