This morning we are off on our tour so we are down in the cafe for breakfast at 8am. Christian is already slicing oranges ready to put them through the press. Ian orders the same veggie omelette that he had yesterday...I am tempted and order pancake with blackberries though I strongly suspect that these are not blackberries as we know them! Breakfast arrives and the pancake is not as we know it either! Three huge pancakes a bit like scotch pancake in consistency but twice as thick, and all covered in blueberries. Very nice all the same although I cannot manage to eat all three! After breakfast we sort ourselves out and take a slow amble up to the meeting point for the tour. It isn’t far and we have arrived half an hour early so ... read more

We may have bagged the only room in the hotel with windows but last night we payed the price because it was hellishly noisy! The traffic belts up the road at breakneck speed over the ancient cobbles, plus there was the noise from all the fiesta revellers. This morning we decide to have breakfast in the hotel as they have a cosy little cafe. Ian orders a vegetarian omelette whilst I stick with the healthy fruit and yoghurt option. When the food arrives I am presented with a whole mango and various other fruits as well as a bowl of yoghurt and some sprinkles. The sprinkles are delicious and turn out to be peanuts and chocolate - not so healthy after all then! Ian’s omelette turns up covered in guacamole - he says it is spicy ... read more

Today I have managed to sleep until 0530 - jet lag wearing off, hurrah! Most of the day will be spent travelling so plenty of time to reflect and write up a bit of drivel for our blog followers, I know JP will be especially pleased :-) It’s Ian’s turn to fetch our morning coffees whilst I try to back up all our apple devices - this involves standing under the modem in the corridor as the signal is too weak in our room! It doesn’t take too long and I even have time for a shower before Ian returns. It’s Sunday and the nearest Oxxo is not open but Ian has managed to find another so I don’t have to go without my vanilla latte. I have scheduled an Uber for 9am and we are ... read more

Today we are having an easy day. I am still jet lagged (woke at 3.30am again despite having forced myself not to go to bed before 10pm) and Ian is feeling slightly under the weather. I go out for the morning coffee takeaways whilst Ian sleeps in. First attempt fails as I cannot find the Oxxo shop...everything looks very different in the dark! Back at the hotel, I check it out on google maps and Ian gives more detailed instructions so my second attempt is successful! Today we are completing the remainder of a walking tour up in the historic centre and having a second attempt at visiting the palace (making sure to take our passports with us!). We have decided to give the castle a miss especially as we are having heavy rain showers here ... read more

We are up early today to visit the pyramids at Teotihuacan. This involves another metro trip but this time changing lines half way through. We wanted to be up early to avoid the sardine crush of yesterday! Amazingly the price is exactly the same as yesterday despite being four times the distance. The metro takes us to the Northern Bus Terminal where it’s a simple process to buy a return ticket and the bus leaves after only 10 minutes. It’s a pretty basic bus but it was our only option unless we wanted the full blown guided tour or a private taxi. The bus takes an hour with one stop on the way where a security guard boards the bus to take all our photos! We arrive as the site opens at 9am and are glad ... read more

We are up early this morning, Ian having snored his way through the entire night and me waking at 3am - how does he manage it? As penance I send him out in search of coffee at 7am. He returns with two lattes and a heavy bread based cake thing. This is not good for me but I am rather too hungry to object. Apparently the fresh fruit stalls are not open yet. Today’s plan is to visit Chapultepec Castle and the Bosque de Chapultepec (large park) in which it is situated. In another bid to beat the tour groups we plan to be there by 9am when it opens. Now I know we could easily order an Uber but where’s the fun in that? Instead, we set off for the metro station which is just ... read more

We’re both pretty jetlagged and waking in a room which looks out into a void doesn’t help - we thought it was still the middle of the night but it turns out that there is a cover on top of the quadrangle we face on to - in fact it is 6am! They have promised us a room with a proper window today! Bit of a nuisance moving but we would prefer a room with a view! We successfully make a Skype call to mum and dad. They are both fine although mum is missing me. We decide to take it easy today as we are both tired. I am gagging for a cup of coffee so we take a wander in search of a cafe for breakfast. It’s 9am and nothing appears to be open ... read more

An early start from Birmingham. There are emotional goodbyes and I don’t think I will ever erase the image of my mum and dad sadly waving goodbye from their lounge window. It doesn’t matter that mum will soon have forgotten I was ever there - I just hope she will remember who I am when we FaceTime dad tomorrow! Were’s that pack of travel tissues? We take an Uber. It’s a first for us. It arrives on time and delivers us to Birmingham Airport in good time. We will definitely be using Uber in future. A leisurely breakfast had been planned but thanks to O2 this doesn’t happen. Instead I am on the phone to customer service as soon as it opens at 8am for the zillionth time to ask why they have not sorted out ... read more
