We're right at the western edge of the Carribean and today was snorkelling on the reef ... Writes SC. A short but very exciting boat ride out to the reef and three different stops to get in and see the wonders of the reef. No Underwater shots obviously, but we saw Barracuda, StoneFish, Nurse sharks (see picture) a very large lobster (see picture) and all sorts of other stuff. Finally a school of sting rays swam right underneath me... Reminding me of the horror stories of self mortification.. See Cathy's of yesterday. An amazing, hot and fun morning ! Glad we bought our own masks and snorkels. We took plenty of precautions but both caught the sun. Tomorrow we travel to Mexico.... read more

No, he hasn’t lost me yet (Cj writes) ... We crossed from Guatemala to Belize by land, and very soon found ourselves at another Mayan site - much smaller than Tikal and somehow more manageable, with a better sense of the community that lived there. Our guides delighted in regaling us with tales of how the Mayans ritually pierced their flesh - self mortification - in order to worship their many gods. Women used sting ray spines to pierce their tongues repeatedly, men used the spines to pierce - well, let’s say that the men in the group went very pale. Then it was off to Caye Caulker, an exhilarating one hour speedboat ride out of Belize City. Came Caulker is an absolutely charming little Caribbean no cars to speak of, so everyone walks, bikes or ... read more

So I was wrong about Belize - that's tomorrow.Today we were in Tikal - a major Mayan site only partially excavated and dating from about 800 BC. Many sites over a large area - we walked about 8km and climbed several monuments. Fabulous views from the top with the ruins emerging from the green sea of the tropical rain forrest. The day ended at lovely lake side hotel with a fab sunset.... read more

SC writes: So we had a very good journey over to Miami and an OK flight to Guatamala City. We've had three days here in a very large and very grand hotel but it's in the middle nowhere... However, there are great breakfasts and a good health suite. Unfortunately the weekend we were here was a holiday weekend so the few places worth visiting (a couple of great sounding museums) were closed! Whoops... Oh well our extra days here were only ever about getting over the jet leg... And that has worked out well. We.ve been chillin'! We have done a bit of shopping at a handicraft market and a posh local mall.....(where I was surprised to find a London Bus). Today we went to the Zoo - along with crowds of locals - and it ... read more

We're gearing up for RTW4 by writing up some retrospective blogs from our recent California trip..... You should be able to see earlier blogs. Anyway, back to California.. SC writes: San Fran is one of my favourite cities and it was great to go back. I first visited there in May 1980 on my first transatlantic trip. Some things have changed since then, inevitably, (and including me) but some things have not. I recently digitised my photos of that trip so I’ve complied some then and now comparisons…. We actually stayed in Berkeley which is an interesting and attractive place with loads of eateries galleries and students. We were in a small boutique hotel above a coffee shop – all fine. Access to San Fran was by BART – the metro – but about 30 minutes ... read more

We're gearing up for RTW4 by writing up some retrospective blogs from our recent California trip..... You should be able to see earlier blogs - look for "Previous entry"... Anyway, back to California.. Highway 1 northwards to Mendocino CJ writes: Our final stop was to be Mendocino, about 189 miles north on the famous Highway 1 – the Pacific Coastal Road (PCR). What fabulous scenery! We knew it was good when we decided to go up north, but hadn't appreciated just how wild that coast is. Fishing is good right along the coast, and we passed many small towns built around that industry. It took us about 6 hours driving along winding roads to get to our destination. The PCR hugs the edge of the cliff – sometimes right on the edge – and we could ... read more

We're gearing up for RTW4 by writing up some retrospective blogs from our recent California trip..... You should be able to see earlier blogs. Anyway, back to California.. SC writes… I had some good memories of gigs in San Fran many years ago and was keen to find some new music experiences. Well we found a good one – The Mountain Winery near Saratoga, near San Jose. In the UK we booked to see Boz Scaggs (supported by Madelaine Peyroux) and Cheap Trick (supported by “Ann Wilson from Heart”) – two gigs in three nights. The Winery is right up in the hills overlooking Silicon Valley and is a delightful setting. There’s a large (3000 seater) amphitheatre and stage set that’s a building not unlike the Alamo in Texas. A brilliant setting and lovely weather for ... read more

We had no plans to go to the USA – Trump and all that – but then BA came up with an “Air Miles Sale”, so we felt obliged to find a few trips – and this was the first. We went for Wine (Sonoma & Napa), Music (found some good gigs in Saratoga) and a revisit to San Fran. That shaped the itinerary. We’re back using a blog – not Facebook – and we’re catching up a bit here. Wine CJ writes: We’re partial to a drop of wine, Steve and I, and he’s been to the Napa Valley before (and loved it) but I haven’t. So when we landed in Oakland (think Southend as compared to Heathrow airport in term of size and busyness) we picked up the hire car and set off for ... read more

Hi All, So we are home safe and sound - no issues on the way back. Here are a few final pictures from Rio and one or two reflections. Best Meal - El Establo in BA - the best steaks we've ever had - thanks Shirley! Best Hotel - Novotel in BA - first class and great Value. Sauna was great too. Best Experience - First sight of Iguazu Falls - jaw droppingly impressive Best Shopping - BA definitely - bought loads - decent prices helped - we really like BA. Best laugh - Watching two crew, five passengers and several passers-by trying to move a car (by lifting it!) out of the way of a Tram in Santa Teresa, Rio. The whole tram load of passengers cheered and clapped when after 10 minutes of struggling ... read more

Hi All, Well, here we are in the last lounge waiting for the last flight - flight 9 of our RTW3 trip. As we blogged last time, the weather in Rio has been a bit wet and we have been dodging the rain the fair bit. But when the sun comes out, and it has done, it has been fabulous. Saturday involved travelling into Centro which is actually a decent 15 minutes ride on the Metro. Half an hour by the time you have got down to the platforms and back, but it is an effective way to get around this very large city. We took the famous vintage tram ride up he hill to Santa Teresa. It is a fantastic ride and passes over a very high viaduct (64m high, as I recall) before flogging ... read more
