I'll let the photos do the explaining, but as you can see it was a VERY busy week! Monday Farewell pizza party at our house and drinking games Tuesday Public Holiday Wednesday Busy day at Kindy Thursday Graduation for 8 children graduating from Kindy. First was a 1 hour ceremony at the Kindy (MEK) and all the mums wore kimono. Then we went to lunch at a hotel in the city and celebrated their graduation. It was like a mini wedding - 5 course meal, lots of speeches etc. It was also a farewell party for Belinda and Alek who have just completed their 1 year contracts at MEK. Friday Last day of the Kindy year. Special bento. Another farewell party at a sushi restaurant ... read more

On the weekend, Tomoko, Belinda and I went to Tokyo. We caught the Shinkansen from Shizuoka to Tokyo, jumped on a few very crowded trains and finally arrived at Omotesando. Belinda and Tomoko had a hairdresser appointment so I went (window) shopping for a few hours. Omotesando Avenue is like the Champs Elysees of Paris, lined with huge trees and designer shops. The first thing I noticed about Tokyo was the amount of tourists (Shizuoka is not a touristy place at all), and second, the amount of people in general! I saw a lot of strange fashions but the funniest thing I saw was a man walking a dog…but the dog was in its own special trolley being pushed along. What made it worse was that it was a bulldog that was dressed in some kind ... read more

On Saturday, Alek, Belinda and I drove to a small town called Mariko, about half an hour away from Shizuoka city. We went to a couple of temples and then to a big workshop/arts center where you can go and make your own handicrafts (like pottery etc.). We didn't have time to make anything but I will probably go back sometime before December. We ate lunch at a traditional Japanese restaurant and then went for a walk around the area. You can read more about my week in the comments under the photos. Tokyo tomorrow!!! Belinda, Tomoko and I are staying one night in Roppongi (clubbing area of Tokyo - should be lots of fun!)....will report again soon!... read more

The food in Japan so far has been great! I have only had traditional Japanese food a couple of times - one really good experience and one very bad (see below). On the weekend Belinda, Tomoko and I went to a Mexican restaurant - very nice (but of course run by Japanese)! We have also been to Italian and Chinese restaurants. One of the first things I noticed was the amount of restaurants here - I will never go hungry! Belinda and I go out to eat about twice a week. Some restaurants are really cheap; they have a $12 deal, where you get a main, salad and dessert. We have also been to Maccas and that is pretty much the same - taste and cost. A couple Saturdays ago the Kindy staff and all the ... read more

The weather was horrible - freezing cold and windy. We cut the day a bit short and lucky for that because it started to rain soon after we left. I felt so sorry looking at all the animals in their tiny cages, in unnatural environments. The kids had fun - apart from complaining about the cold!... read more

Friday night Belinda and I went out with Tomoko (our principal) and two other Japanese staff to Karaoke. Karaoke here is great! You have small private rooms, with books and books listing old, to very recent songs (Japanese and English). To order food and drinks, you just pick up the phone in your room and order what you want. We chose a fixed price for unlimited drinks, which included any kind of drinks (spirits, beer, cocktails) for only $20! We took advantage of this! When our karaoke time was up (11pm), Belinda and I didn’t want to go home so we caught a cab into town and went to a small club called Flyte Time. It was ladies night so for about $24 we got unlimited drinks here too! We were hardly dressed to go out ... read more

The Kindergarten (called MEK - Miyazaki English Kindergarten) is a 7 minute walk away. It is a tiny centre for the amount of children that attend - 60. There are three classes - we have our own classrooms but they are tiny: Koala Class 3-4 year olds - Belinda Panda Class 4-5 year olds - Me! Bear Class 5-6 year olds - Alek - Macedonian/Australian and he’s 23. (before anyone asks, no I’m not interested in him) The children are all of course Japanese and like all kindy children, some are much cuter than others! I’m kind of lucky to have gotten the middle class as they have already been at the kindergarten for nearly 2 years and know some English. They know basic things like animals, colours, basic instructions etc. I was surprised that I ... read more

I’ve finally got the internet hooked up! I’m now re-attached to the world! My mobile not working here has really annoyed me but I’m getting used to it not ruling my life! I have been here for nearly 6 weeks already. The weeks go fairly fast which is good because I really look forward to the weekends. Having a full time job, I have never appreciated weekends so much as I do now! Well what can I say about Japan…apart from: there are vending machines on nearly every corner, girls wear miniskirts in the middle of winter, the kids eat with chopsticks at kindy, the trains are superfast, you spend a quarter of the day taking your shoes on and off, and it is still FREEZING COLD!!! There is so much to tell, I’ll start with ... read more

Early Saturday morning, 8am to be exact, Alek and I were picked up by Takahumi. He is the father of a child in my class. It took 2 hours to get to the theme park, which is in the Yamanashi prefecture. The theme park is very close to the base of Mount Fuji and there was a lot of snow around the area. We were lucky that it was a clear day (but only about 5 degrees) making the view beautiful from the top of the roller coasters. We paid one price (about $45), which got us a 'free' pass to allow us unlimited rides. Once you have your pass, you go over to the photo booths. They take a quick black and white photo of your face, which is printed onto your pass. Very cool! ... read more

Sunday was supposed to be a day of shopping. We started at toys'r'us, then got side tracked. We saw there was a clear view of Mount Fuji and having no luck the day before, Belinda and I thought we could get some nice photos, so we kept on driving closer and closer to it to find a better view. Before we knew it we were at Fuji - the town! (and the view was not as good as we had hoped) It is only about an hour away. We found out there was a festival on so we tried to find it. An hour later, me being the driver and Belinda the navigator, we found it! We were so excited! It was quite a large street festival, with lots of food stalls, selling all sorts of ... read more
