Our new pets are so cute! We got them from our friend, Daisuke, who owns the reptile shop. Daisuke just lives around the corner from us, so a few weeks ago we walked to his house to check out his personal zoo! He has a silver fox, a piglet (which can roam the house as it pleases), a possum, turtles and a MONKEY! It is the cutest thing I have ever seen!... read more

Our reptile friend Daisuke picked us up in his Monster Truck and took us to a party in town. He knew the DJs from Tokyo that were playing, so got us express and free entry! It was at a small hip hop R&B club called Boom Boom Bash. There were some cool dancers and singers before the DJs came on. After that, we went to Our Boozer - the owner remembered us, even though Amy has only been once before! We met some locals on the street (while waiting for food) that we might go karaoking with this weekend, then were going to go home but heard our favourite para para music blaring from Flyte Tyme (which is on the 8th floor of a building) and just had to go in for a dance or two! ... read more

After a drive to check our the local beach at Miho, Amy, Hiedi and I went strawberry picking! The deal is -simple...you pay about 15 bucks, then you eat as much as you can pick! It was fun and the strawberries were beautiful - afterwards we were so full! On the way back home we stopped by Shimizu Port and checked out the S-Pulse Dream Plaza (named after the Shimizu soccer team).... read more

Happy New Year Well not really, but April is the beginning of the school and kindy year in Japan. There was an opening ceremony for all the new children. It was quite a formal event, some of the mums even wore kimono and all the dads had video cameras! No tears on the day, but boy, was I in for a nasty shock the week after! Well it wasn't quite so bad, but a few children cried the WHOLE day on their first full day of kindy. Since then I have not yet had a full day of peace. I am now the Koala teacher (the youngest class, mostly 3 year olds, a couple are still 2), and have 19 children, 15 of whom are brand new to the kindy. I think Amy has about ... read more

Saturday Amy and I decided to go on a day trip to Kamakura. We caught the Shinkansen from Shizuoka, then a couple of local trains which altogether took about 2 hours. There was a festival on at the main shrine in the city which is surrounded by beautiful gardens. We were lucky to also see two couples getting married! We then checked out the Great Buddha of Kamakura. For 25 cents we also went inside it! It was constructed in 1252 and was originally located inside a large temple hall but at the end of the 15th century the temple buildings were washed away by a tsunami tidal wave! I loved the main shopping street of Kamakura, lots of funny things to see (namely tail man) and every food shop had free samples!!! The honey juice ... read more

Amy, Heidi (another new teacher also from Adelaide) and I caught the bus into the city to check out the annual Shizuoka Festival. Stages with entertainment and food stalls were set up in Sumpu Park. Sumpu Park holds the ruins of the Sumpu Castle, constructed in the 15th century. Some of it has been reconstructed. Part of the festival is a big parade through the city. My favourite parade character was a dog dressed in a kimono! ... read more

Cherry blossoms in Japan are a big deal because they only flower for a couple of weeks each year, so Amy and I went for a drive around Shizuoka to do some cherry blossom viewing! We went to a park fairly close to our house, then to Nihondaira where there was a huge park and nice views of Mt Fuji.... read more

Yay, my new room mate, Amy has arrived! I went to uni with Amy in Adelaide. After I got the job in Japan, I pestered all my uni friends to apply so I wouldn't be a loner in Japan! Amy was the only one who went through with it all and is now finally here! I am so excited to have a friend here, it will be a great year, I'm really looking forward to it! ... read more

Sunday 26th March On Sunday Belinda, Tomoko and I tested out nearly every type of Japanese transport! We drove to Shizuoka station to catch the Shinkansen to Tokyo. From there we caught a local train, and then the monorail Haneda Airport. We flew to Okinawa Island (south of Japan - 2hrs 45 mins), got on a bus to pick up our cool Toyota rent-a-car! The hotel was beautiful and had lots of nice restaurants. The first night, we ate at a grill restaurant where you cook all your own meat. It was fantastic and delicious! The seafood salad, of course was all raw, so I just cooked it! Not the most sober we have ever been, we had a bit of trouble getting back to our room because we caught the elevator from a different wing. ... read more
