So, let me tell you a little bit about Cambodia...The country is fascinating with breathtaking Angkor Complex. Coliseum looks like a child's play next to this amazing creation. It is horrifying to think of events only thirty years past, when you visit Killing Fields of Pol Pot. The country of warm weather and even warmer people. Cambodia is, however, absolutely incomprehensible when you see all the trash. I know, a lot of things have been said about Siem Reap and all the temples that surround it. They are beautiful. It is well worth the visit to see those magnificent religious creations. I hired a tuk-tuk for my time in Siem Reap. The price varied from 10-25$ (everything is in dollars, all the price quotes in restaurants, hotels, even ATMs give you dollars, not local currency) depending ... read more

Laos: Mountains and Dust Its been a while since the last post, so here are a few updates. I spent two days in Luang Prabang. I did not particularly like the town. It is too touristy, and not in a good way. Local life (as in shopping, dining, entertaining...) is practically non existent, or if it exist it is somewhere outside the tourist area, that is by accident or on purpose is separated from the rest of small town. Some how the town does not feel authentic or charming. It lacks character. It is situated in between two rivers and has really beautiful nature backdrop. The nature part does make up for the lack of character somewhat. It was not very expensive to stay there I paid 60,000 ($6) for a room with bathroom and hot ... read more

The trip from Thailand to Laos was very interesting….After spending about 5 hours in a minibus we have arrived to Mekong River Chiang Kong. The accommodations for the night were basic with toilets and showers outside…somewhat challenging, considering that the temperature dropped in the night significantly…I think it was close to freezing. We crossed the river to Lao in the morning on those long, flat bottom and very low boats. Passport control prior to that was minimal at best. Lao side was a lot more diligent, and a lot less organized with passports and visas. You suppose to get a visa on arrival (provided that you have a passport size photo with you). After filling out an application you give it along with your passport to Lao border official, then you wait, and wait and wait…There ... read more

My last days in Chiang Mai were highlighted by the visit to Doi Suthep, one of Thailand most famous Wats. Doi Suthep is UNESCO heritage sight and it is said that if you haven’t been to Doi Suthep, you haven’t been to Chiang Mai. The temple is beautiful. Three hundred and six steps (or two hundred and eighty seven by some sources) lead to the temple. The views of Chiang Mai from the temple are impressive. It was a time well spent. Pictures included. Tiger Kingdom...very touristy...well, it is purely for tourists. It is a zoo of sorts that specializes in tigers. The difference from the regular zoo is that you are able to pet tigers. You pay certain amount of money ($17-25) for the privilege of spending 10- 15 mins with a tiger one on ... read more

You can call me a tree hugger now...Yes, you can. I know, it is very hard to believe for those of you who know me, but it is true. Let me explain. I signed up for this Jungle Jumping adventure. The idea is that you "jump" through the rain forest (old and beautiful). The actual jump is not really a jump. You wear this funny harness and a helmet (see pics, Not my favorite look). The harness gets hooked to a cable and you zip from one tree to the next while being strapped in like a baby who is learning to walk in a swing. The jump can be up to 300 meters long (about 1000 feet) and the drop down, between trees...(oh, don't remember, but it is FAR!!!) The platforms on trees are suspended ... read more

Another day in Chiang Mai… I went on a trekking tour yesterday. Quite an adventure. The program for the day included visiting orchid/butterfly farm, going to a local/tribe village, walking through the jungle to a beautiful waterfall (swimming in it if you really, really wanted), visit to another local village, riding elephants, eating lunch, more tribal village experience and finally, the conclusion of the day: white water rafting and bamboo rafting. The whole deal was 1200baht, about 35-40$. What can I say about this experience…Let me start by saying that yesterday was really cold (Thai standard) and cloudy in Chiang Mai and surrounding areas (It is wintery here and temperatures were in low 20s….not too bad to walk around, but pretty terrible to swim , later about that part) Butterfly/orchid farm…Butterfly part was …unimpressive. I enjoyed ... read more

Took a cooking course today. Learned how to cook a few Thai dishes. Delicious. Looks very simple, and takes only 10 min for an avarage dish. Will try to practice and cook when I get home. Dont ask me to cook for you though :) It was very cheap, only 950 baht (about 30$) Took almost all day. Transportation to and from Cooking school was provided. I was able to choose 4 different dishes to cook, plus salad and desert. We had 5 people in class, all of them chose different things. Teacher showed how to cook each meal and we were able to try all of them. The cultural aspects of Thai cooking were explaind and I got a recepie book at the end. Nice way to spent a day (oh, went to the local ... read more

So, the capital of the north proved to be pretty small. The lonely planet guide says that the city has about 1.6 mil. Population, but it looks much smaller to me. The older part of the city is surrounded by wall (most of them are destroyed) and moat (pretty functional, filled with water, makes it a challenge for traffic. The old city makes a perfect square. Very interesting. The weather is good (according to fellow travelers, who have been in town for some time it have cooled down significantly), was cloudy most of the day, but still hot and humid. I am sweating all the time (forget about make up here, or any kind of hair products, will run in minutes), I am wondering about Thais, they never look hot. Everybody is always dressed pretty warm ... read more

Ever wondered how would it feel to change plans that you have made for month on a whim? Ever tried to walk to a plane ticket counter and ask for a ticket for the next available plane anywhere? Yah, me either. I actually tried it today (well, I did keep destination in mind) Sometime during my long, long flight from JFK to Bangkok I wondered why I have decided to stay in BKK for two days and only after those days, spend doing who knows what, to travel to Chiang Mai? Why not to do it right away? I will be at the airport already, I don’t have to sit in hours of traffic that way, don’t have to spend extra money on anything associated with Bangkok...So, I have decided to try to buy a ticket ... read more

How does any trip starts? You have a dream of going to particular place because you have seen it in the movie before ( Las Vegas? New York? Tokyo anyone? )...You have read a book that had a perfectly romantic description of Rome or Paris, and you feel like you absolutely have to go to the same place in order to experience the same thing... Well, it was not exactly the case with me. I found out that I have a two month break from school and have decided that I have to do something interesting during that time. Traveling sounded like a good idea. I am a student and this kind of implies that I have to travel cheap. Europe was out of the question for my projected vacation for that reason. I toyed with ... read more
