Today we went into Manchester and caught the 11.15am screening of Terminator Salvation. Going to the early screening ended up being a real bargain with all tickets before midday being just £4.00 each! When we were buying our tickets at about 11.25am we asked if the movie would have started yet. The guy on the ticket counter assured us that we would be fine to catch the start of the movie. As it turned out we had heaps of time. We still saw four previews before the movie finally started at about 11.40am. In the end I think all we missed was the advertising! We both enjoyed the movie. Neither of us could remember enough detail from earlier installments to decide if there are any glaring continuity issues with it or not??! From The Printworks we ... read more

This morning I headed down to the beauty salon that is located at the gym at the football ground at the end of the road. I had an 8.45am appointment so left Bernie lying in bed to walk down in the drizzle in my open-toed sandals for my leg wax and pedicure in preparation for Spain. When I arrived there was no-one there, the gym wasn’t even open so I sent a text to Kath to make sure that I was in the right place. A couple of minutes later someone arrived to open the gym so he let me in to wait in the warm and dry for the salon to open. The beautician arrived only a couple of minutes after than so all was OK - I was in the right place and they ... read more

It was raining when we woke up this morning at about 6.00am. It was still raining by 8.00am so we decided that slogging around a field in the mud with the warden looking for a herd of white cows seemed pretty undesirable so we abandoned that idea. With the house at Cragside not opening until 1.00pm we could have wandered around the gardens for a couple of hours, but that seemed like a pretty horrible idea too with the temperature only about 7°C and wet. We interrogated Edna about points of interest and tourist destinations in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, York and Leeds, but in the end decided that we would just drive back to Stalybridge. We have had four good days out of five so we really can’t complain. We sent a text to Kath to let her ... read more

Today we had planned to go down to Cragside at Rothbury, described in the NT Handbook as an extraordinary Victorian house, gardens and estate - the wonder of its age! Well, that was the plan until Albert announced that what he really wanted to do while they were up in this area was visit Hadrian’s Wall and that it would work out best if they were to do that today and then drive home to Stalybridge so that Kath could get a good night’s sleep as the rather hard beds here have been troubling her back. Bernie and I said that would be fine as we have visited Hadrian’s Wall and Housesteads Fort before. So, half an hour later, Kath and Albert were packed up and gone! We decided to revise our plans too and head ... read more

It was a bit sunnier this morning, but quite cool and windy! Our first stop today was Bamburgh Castle the ancient capital of Northumbria and home to its Kings. The oldest part of the castle is the Norman Keep a 900 year old legacy left by William the Conqueror and it remains the most imposing part of the site. Unfortunately Bamburgh is privately owned and we had to pay for our visit today! When we went through the Great Hall we were fortunate enough to hear a couple of instruments being played for a tour group. It seems that the tour group was due at 10.00am and the entertainment had been organized for them between 10.00am and 11.00am before the rest of the paying public started to arrive. Having chairs laid out in the Great Hall ... read more

It started off sunny again today, but clouded over mid morning as we set off sightseeing. We headed to Berwick-upon-Tweed via Doddington and the estate villages of Ford and Etal. We visited the Heatherslaw Corn Mill on the River Till between Ford and Etal. The mill is a working museum and we were able to see wheat being ground. The river is low at the moment so the mill was working rather slowly. This is in contrast to 2008 when the river was in flood and the level of the water in the lowest level of the mill was over my head and the mill couldn’t operate at all. From Heatherslaw we continued on to Berwick-upon-Tweed. As we live so close to Berwick in Australia, we couldn’t come this close to the original Berwick without visiting ... read more

The sun is still shining today!!! That makes four glorious days in row. Kath and Albert are minding Samantha this morning and not heading off to Northumberland for our caravanning holiday until lunch time. We discovered that we could visit yet another NT property on our way up so we decided to travel up in our car and meet them at the caravan park in Wooler later this afternoon when the caravan will be available to check in. From Stalybridge Edna took us through Grasscroft, Uppermill, Dobcross and Denshaw to the M62. I’m pretty sure this is the way we tried to go when we went up to Castle Howard a couple of years ago, but Edna did a much better job than I did navigating through all these small villages!! I think I lost the ... read more

We woke up this morning to another glorious day! That makes three days in a row of blue skies and sunshine which is a rare thing indeed here in England. Since the weather was so beautiful we decided to drive back down to Congleton to visit some more NT properties in that area. Our first stop was at Mow Cop Folly - the ‘ruin’ that we could see last Sunday from Little Moreton Hall. Edna is still earning her keep as she managed to guide us to Mow Cop without any trouble. Unfortunately, Mow Cop is not a NT property that is in her database so she could not get us right to the folly - just to the village of Mow Cop. That was a bit frustrating as we could then see the folly up ... read more

The weather today is fantastic - the best day they have had so far in England this spring!! So of course we should have done something to take advantage of the beautiful weather shouldn’t we??? But no, we headed over to the shops at Denton didn’t we so that we could stimulate England’s economy a little bit to help them out of the recession??!! I bought some trousers for work in Denton a couple of years ago so I was keen to go back to the Wallis and Dorothy Perkins stores. Bernie was keen to go back to the discount sporting goods store! Well, we bent the plastic a bit with me buying two pairs of Dorothy Perkin’s trousers and Bernie buying two dri-flo tops and a tee shirt for a fraction of what they would ... read more

Yay, the internet is working this morning so we have been able to load the first three days of our travel blog. We are really impressed with how easy it is to load and how straightforward it is to include photos! The weather is a bit better today. Still overcast first thing, but at least it is not raining anymore! First stop this morning was Stagshaw Garden, a National Trust property in Ambleside. The rhododendrons in the gardens are still quite spectacular although a little bit past their best. The views down over Lake Windermere were fabulous especially since the sun has actually started to shine. From the gardens we drove to another NT property, Townend House at Troutbeck only a few minutes away from Ambleside. Townend is a remote stone farmhouse with a slate roof, ... read more
